Chapter 28 The Real Madman
Jiang Fei couldn't help but feel panicky. The ecology was so good in this era, it was not surprising that there were wild beasts in the forest. There might even be jackals, tigers and leopards, which would eat her up until nothing was left.
Her steps became faster and faster, but the voice was neither fast nor slow. When she walked faster, the other person walked faster, and when she walked slower, the other person walked slower too. It seemed as if the voice was following her like a shadow.
But after looking around, I found nothing.
Jiang Fei's heart was beating like a drum. Could it be a ghost? Jiang Fei had never seen ghosts and gods with her own eyes, but she always maintained awe.
Her back was soaked with cold sweat and rain. While running, she suddenly stopped and turned around to look behind her.
The tall treetops formed a dome overhead, blocking most of the rain, breaking up the sunlight, and immersing the bluestone road in dark gray shadows.
In the shadow was a figure holding an umbrella, tall and straight, with his face hidden in the shadow of the umbrella.
"I don't think I'm too stupid to be discovered by you."
Pei Jing's voice, mixed in with the sound of rain, had a strange tenderness.
He slowly lifted the umbrella, revealing his handsome face. His complexion was paler than Jiang Fei had ever seen him before, but there was a hint of a smile at the corner of his lips.
Pei Jing had been with her for a long time. He frightened her and then watched her run around like a frightened cat, which gave him a strange pleasure.
"Your Majesty?" Jiang Fei breathed a sigh of relief.
Now that she met Pei Jing, who was not a beast, she was not so scared anymore.
Wild beasts only have instincts, not reason. Pei Jing may be crazy, but at least he can understand what people say. What's more, he has a favorability level of 14 towards her, which should be enough to save his life.
"Why is the prince here?"
"I should be the one asking you this." Pei Jing walked forward slowly.
Jiang Fei subconsciously took a step back. The cold clothes stuck to her body, which still made her feel a little cold. "I, I'm lost."
Pei Jing stared at her intently, his hairpin loosened slightly, and a few strands of hair fell down, like a mad desire to break free from restraints.
"What did you see?" Pei Jing's voice was too hoarse to be human.
Jiang Fei felt a chill down her spine, instinctively sensing danger, and subconsciously replied, "I didn't see anything."
Pei Jing's gaze slowly moved down and landed on the hem of her clothes.
Jiang Fei followed his gaze and saw that a corner of the hem of her skirt was missing. She then noticed that his right hand was holding a piece of cloth, the same color as her skirt. It should be the fragment of her skirt that was torn by a branch.
"What exactly did you see?" Pei Jing asked again.
Jiang Fei couldn't help but stare at his eyes. Those eyes that were always unfathomable were now abnormally scarlet.
Something is wrong. There is something very wrong with Pei Jing in front of him.
It wasn't the psychological suggestion that came from knowing that he was the real Pei Jing, but the Pei Jing in front of her was different from every other time she had seen him, indescribably strange.
It was like an uncontrollable wild beast was about to break out of this body.
Pei Jing suddenly took a step forward, and the edge of the oil-paper umbrella almost touched Jiang Fei's forehead.
He leaned over, his handsome yet pale face looking strange in the shadows. "Then why are you running?"
"I..." Jiang Fei's throat tightened, "I'm afraid there are wild animals in the forest."
"Beast?" Pei Jing chuckled softly. The chuckle seemed to be squeezed out from deep in his chest, with a creepy tremor and indescribably cold.
"The person you should be more afraid of than the beast is me."
The rain was getting heavier, and the bean-sized raindrops hit the umbrella, making a dull sound.
Jiang Fei wiped away the rain that blurred her eyes and noticed that the veins on the back of Pei Jing's hand holding the umbrella were bulging, as if he was trying hard to restrain something.
"Your Highness." She took a tentative step back. "The rain is too heavy. How about—"
The voice stopped abruptly, and Jiang Fei was pressed against the tree trunk by a huge force, and Pei Jing's hand was like an iron clamp around her neck.
Jiang Fei's pupils suddenly shrank.
This was different from every time before. It was not a joke, nor a test, but a real, almost indissoluble murderous intent.
how so?
Suddenly, the system's warning sounded in my mind: "Run away!"
"Isn't there still a favorability level of 14?" Jiang Fei asked the system.
The system quickly said, "I don't know. I found it was gone as soon as I logged in. Now it's... minus 50! And it's still falling, 53, 54, 55..."
The force on his neck was gradually tightening, and the strange smile on Pei Jing's face was getting more and more intense.
“Let…let go…”
Jiang Fei struggled desperately and grabbed Pei Jing's hand. Her nails scratched the back of his hand, leaving bloody marks, but Pei Jing seemed to feel no pain at all.
There was a madness in his eyes. "Tell me, what did you see?"
"I..." She raised her eyes and looked directly at Pei Jing, saying with difficulty, "I only saw... the prince kneeling in front of the layman's door... begging for lotus."
"Qiu Lian?" Pei Jing suddenly laughed, "Now that you've seen it, you can't leave here alive."
"You're very interesting." He threw away his umbrella and stroked her cheek. "It's a pity that interesting things die quickly."
Jiang Fei's vision began to blur, and the only sound in her ears was her own violent heartbeat.
"Don't be afraid," he said softly, but the strength in his hands continued to increase, "It won't hurt soon..."
"Host!" the system shouted.
Jiang Fei regained a bit of clarity from the shouting, and saw the bloodshot in Pei Jing's eyes, and also saw the pale hand on her cheek.
She suddenly turned her head and bit Pei Jing's wrist, and immediately tasted the blood.
The bite was so severe that Pei Jing let go in pain and looked at his wrist which was bleeding instantly.
Jiang Fei was finally able to breathe, gasping for air.
She didn't have time to see Pei Jing's reaction, so she turned around and ran into the woods. Apart from the sound of rain, all she could hear was her own panting.
After running for an unknown amount of time, she suddenly slipped and rolled down the slope.
Jiang Fei quickly used her arms to protect her head. As the world spun around her, she felt pain all over her body from being scratched by gravel and branches. Finally, she crashed heavily into a tree and stopped.
Jiang Fei curled up on the ground, unable to recover from the pain for a long time.
"system……"
System: "I'm here."
Jiang Fei lay among the dead branches and leaves, letting the rain pour down on her face. "Am I dying?"
"You won't die," the system said. "Your vital signs are good, and the wounds are superficial. I've decided to make you the indestructible cockroach."
Jiang Fei laughed, and as she laughed she choked on the rain and coughed.
She slowly got up from the ground and leaned against the tree trunk tiredly. "What should I do now?"
System: "How should I know? I'm just an auxiliary system, not an escape encyclopedia. But then again, why did Pei Jing's favorability towards you drop so much all of a sudden?"
Jiang Fei thought for a moment, "Maybe he felt he had lost his manliness after I saw him kneeling down to beg for mercy?"
But then he thought again and felt that something was not right. The nun also saw it, and Pei Jing didn't kill her, right?
