Chapter 30 You Are Still Useful
There were still some leaves and branches that had not been wetted in the cracks of the rocks, but they were a little damp after the rain.
She searched around again and finally found some surviving dead branches.
As the fire burned, the sky darkened.
Jiang Fei took off her outer shirt and only wore her inner shirt as she moved closer to the fire. Her body finally felt a little warmer and her teeth stopped chattering.
The system had gone offline when she was looking for firewood, leaving her to fend for herself.
Jiang Fei reasonably suspected that the system was just there to watch the fun, but now that Pei Jing had fainted and there was nothing fun to watch, the system went offline.
Jiang Fei sat quietly against the stone wall. It seemed that she could only rest here for a while tonight. She hoped that she would not encounter any wild beasts that hid during the day and came out at night.
Jiutao should have discovered that she was missing by now, and would have sent someone to look for her. Besides, Pei Jing was also missing. Although many people hoped for his death, there should be many people looking for him as well.
Thinking of this, Jiang Fei glanced at Pei Jing. She didn't want Pei Jing to be a corpse by the time others found them, otherwise by the time they found her, it would be the end of her life.
Jiang Fei moved to Pei Jing's side and reached out to touch his forehead. It wasn't hot. Not only was it not hot, it was terribly cold, as if he was dead.
She put her finger under his nose again. Fortunately, he was still breathing.
Jiang Fei took off Pei Jing's outer robe, leaving him with only his inner garment, and moved him to the side of the fire to keep him warm.
Apart from this, there seemed to be nothing else she could do.
Although she hadn't eaten for a day and her stomach was growling with hunger, she didn't know how to hunt, so she could only gnaw on the wild fruits she picked while looking for firewood. The sour juice made her face wrinkle.
She turned to look at Pei Jing, who was still unconscious. His outline looked particularly deep in the firelight.
The night wind blew through the cracks in the rocks, making a whimpering sound, like a wolf howling.
Jiang Fei curled up and couldn't help but lean towards Pei Jing. Having a living person around always gave her courage, which was better than being here alone.
As the night grew deeper, Jiang Fei was exhausted both physically and mentally, and her head kept nodding in sleepiness.
Jiang Fei didn't know how long she had been squinting, her head suddenly tilted and she almost hit her knees. She rubbed her eyes and suddenly heard the sound of a dead branch breaking not far away.
“Crack—”
Jiang Fei froze and looked towards the darkness vigilantly.
Beyond the glow of the fire, two faint green lights were slowly approaching.
"System! System!" Jiang Fei shouted in her mind, but got no response.
The green light got closer and closer, and finally revealed its true appearance.
It was a gray wolf! It bared its sharp white fangs, saliva dripping from the corners of its mouth, and it was obviously very hungry.
Cold sweat instantly broke out on Jiang Fei's palms.
She quietly grabbed a burning piece of wood and pushed Pei Jing with her other hand, "Wake up, Pei Jing, wake up!"
Her voice was trembling, and Pei Jing was still unconscious.
The gray wolf seemed to judge that she was not threatening. The fierce light in its amber eyes gradually condensed into a hook. It slowly arched its back and took an attacking posture.
The moment it pounced on him, Jiang Fei suddenly stood up, waving the torch, "Get out of here!"
The gray wolf was forced back two steps by the fire, but refused to leave. Instead, it began to circle around them.
Only then did Jiang Fei discover that there were several pairs of green lights flashing in the darkness.
It's a pack of wolves!
Wolves like to live in groups. Once one appears, there will definitely be a group around.
Jiang Fei almost despaired.
There was a green and fierce light all around, so she could only dance the torch faster. There was a stone wall behind her, and wolves were in front of her and on both sides. She also had to take care of Pei Jing.
Jiang Fei waved the torch wildly, and the wolves in front were forced to retreat.
Just as she was about to breathe a sigh of relief, a gray shadow suddenly jumped out from the side. A wolf seized the opportunity and pounced on her.
Jiang Fei instinctively raised her arm to resist, and a sharp pain instantly came from her left arm. She screamed in pain, and her left hand randomly grabbed a stone and smashed it hard on the wolf's head.
All the movements are instinctive, one, two, three...
By the time she came to her senses, her hands were covered in blood, and she didn't know whether it was her own or the wolf's. The wolf that had rushed towards her was lying on the ground motionless.
Perhaps this behavior made the wolves aware of the danger, or perhaps killing this underage wolf served as a warning to others.
The leader wolf howled to the sky, began to retreat slowly, and gradually disappeared behind the bushes.
Jiang Fei immediately collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath. He felt a piercing pain in his left arm, and blood dripped from his fingertips.
She trembled and lifted her clothes to take a look. Her arm had been bitten to pieces and the wound was so deep that the bone was visible.
Jiang Fei tore off a piece of her clothes and clumsily wrapped the strips of cloth around the wound. The pain made her eyes red and she gritted her teeth to hold back her tears.
Suddenly there was a noise beside me.
Jiang Fei immediately looked over vigilantly and saw Pei Jing move his fingers, then slowly open his eyes.
Jiang Fei subconsciously moved back, wanting to stay away from him. Noticing the movement, Pei Jing suddenly turned his head and looked at her. When he saw her, there was a brief moment of stunned expression on his face.
He propped himself up and tried to sit up, only to find that his wrists were tightly bound together with strips of cloth, and even his legs were tied up.
Pei Jing looked at Jiang Fei in confusion, "Did you tie him up?"
There are only two of them here. If it wasn't Jiang Fei who tied him up, could it be a ghost?
She was just afraid that Pei Jing would wake up and attack her again, so she did this just in case.
Pei Jing stretched out his hand towards her and said, "Untie it."
His voice was hoarse and his eyes were no longer as red as before, but Jiang Fei still didn't dare to let down his guard.
"Let you go so you can kill me?"
Pei Jing stared at her for a moment, then suddenly laughed, "If you're afraid I'll kill you, then why did you save me?"
Jiang Fei pursed her lips and said, "Of course you are still useful."
She still has to rely on him to complete the task, that's the use.
Pei Jing seemed to have misunderstood her thoughts and nodded in understanding. Jiang Fei was too lazy to correct him and continued to wrap the cloth strips.
Pei Jing seemed to have just noticed her bloody arm, and then he shifted his gaze to the ground, where a not-so-big gray wolf lay, its head smashed into a bloody mess.
Two outer robes hung on the propped-up wooden sticks, one of which belonged to him.
Pei Jing leaned against the stone wall, looking at her leisurely, and lazily twisting the hanging cloth strip.
"Let me remind you, wolves always roam in packs. If there's one here, there must be another pack behind it. Besides, you've already killed one, and they'll hold a grudge and come back again. The smell of blood will attract more beasts."
Jiang Fei didn't need him to remind her, she had already seen that pack of wolves.
She wrapped the cloth strips, looked at the dead wolf on the ground, and mustered up the courage to lift the wolf's hind legs.
She didn't dare go too far, so she threw the wolf out after taking a few steps, hoping that the rain would wash away some of the smell. She then brought some rotten leaves to cover the bloodstains.
Pei Jing watched her series of movements. It was obviously so strenuous, but she still refused to untie his hands. It seemed that in her eyes, he was more terrifying than a jackal.
Jiang Fei sat back in her original position, added a few more pieces of firewood to the fire, and held one of them tightly without letting go.
"Why don't you untie me?" Pei Jing asked with a smile, "Are you going to wait for the wolves to attack next time and fight them alone?"
Jiang Fei pursed her lips tightly and didn't want to say a word to him. She had not forgotten that this man almost took her life, and now she was attacked from both sides.
Suddenly, Pei Jing looked towards the dark forest, raised the corner of his lips and said quietly, "They are coming."
