Chapter 9: Walls Have Ears
"Grandma, what do you want to talk to me about?" Jiang Fei asked.
The maid who came to call her was from the old lady's courtyard. She said expressionlessly, "You'll know when you get there, young lady."
The maids in the mansion are used to flattering the powerful and looking down on the weak. Because of the upcoming marriage with the Wei family, the maids were very enthusiastic about her two days ago, but today they suddenly changed their attitude. Could it be that something went wrong with the marriage with the Wei family?
Jiang Fei followed the maid into Songhe Hall where the old lady lived. Low voices could be heard from the main room, with occasional voices slightly louder.
The maid arrived at the door and announced it, and the room instantly became quiet.
Jiang Fei walked in slowly. There were quite a few people in the room, and several eyes were cast straight at her.
The old lady sat at the head of the table, her face solemn, while Yao sat beside her, her face also not looking too good. In addition to Jiang Rulin, there were several other women sitting in the room, who should be aunts from other rooms.
The atmosphere was so cold and solemn, just like a court trial.
Jiang Fei saluted politely: "Granddaughter pays respects to grandmother, mother and aunts pay their respects."
The old lady didn't ask her to stand up. She just looked at her coldly for a while before she spoke: "I am old now and didn't worry about your marriage before. Today I feel better and asked you to come and ask about your meeting with Wei Sanlang that day."
Jiang Fei replied respectfully, "The Third Young Master Wei is kind and friendly, and our meeting that day went smoothly."
After he finished speaking, he heard a slight sneer.
Jiang Fei turned her head and saw Jiang Rulin sitting below Yao, looking at her with a smug look on her face.
Jiang Rulin suffered a setback at her hands a few days ago, and the reason why she was so proud must be related to Wei Sanlang.
Jiang Fei frowned, and suddenly heard the old lady ask solemnly: "Fei girl, do you know your mistake?"
Jiang Fei's heart was filled with alarm. "I don't know what mistake my granddaughter has made."
"I don't know?" The old lady slammed the table. "I thought you were just naughty, but I didn't expect you to be so shameless! The Wei family sent a message saying that your moral character is flawed and that the marriage with the Jiang family needs to be discussed again."
Jiang Fei's heart skipped a beat. Rich families attached great importance to their reputation, and directly pointing out that someone was morally deficient was like slapping them in the face.
But that day by the lake, Wei Mingzhen clearly agreed to it. What went wrong?
"Why aren't you talking?" Yao was furious. "You actually lied to me that things were going well between you and Wei Sanlang. The fact that you didn't send a letter of withdrawal to the Jiang residence was because of the friendship between our two families."
Jiang Fei took a deep breath, suppressed the turmoil in her heart, and looked up at the old lady. "Grandma, I really don't know what I did wrong. I met the Third Young Master Wei by the lake that day, and we did have a very pleasant conversation. He even personally agreed to the marriage. If the Wei family suddenly changes their mind, I am willing to confront the Third Young Master Wei in person."
The old lady's brows were furrowed. Before she could speak, Jiang Rulin couldn't wait to interrupt, "Second sister, you're still trying to argue after all this? The Wei family sent someone to report that you were embroiled in a struggle with a man by the lake, and that the Third Young Master Wei had witnessed it himself!"
"Ah?" Jiang Fei's heart was shocked.
Could it be that Pei Jing came over to talk to her later and was seen by Wei Mingzhen? This man couldn't be so stingy, could he? They just exchanged a few words, and their fingers didn't even touch, so why was it called pulling and tugging?
"What else do you have to say?" asked the old lady.
Jiang Fei thought for a moment. If she didn't marry Wei Mingzhen, how could she complete the task given by the system?
Thinking of this, Jiang Fei looked at the old lady and said with a fist: "Grandmother, I dare to ask for your permission..."
The old lady looked at her fist-clasping posture, then looked at Jiang Rufei's face, her expression a little confused.
Oh, this isn't a martial arts drama. Jiang Fei switched in an instant and quickly lowered her hand. "Grandma, please let your granddaughter go and explain it to him in person."
There was an uproar in the room.
Yao slammed the table and stood up. "Ridiculous! How could an unmarried girl come to argue on her own? Are you trying to bring disgrace upon the Jiang family?"
The third room's aunt also shrieked, "That's right! If this gets out, people will think our Jiang family's daughters are so eager to get married!"
Jiang Fei was neither humble nor arrogant. "I'm not going to cause trouble. I just feel that since the Wei family has misunderstood my granddaughter, I should explain it myself. If I don't explain it clearly, the Wei family will think that our family discipline is not strict."
After hearing this, the other families shut up. If Jiang Rufei's affairs were to get out, it would probably affect all the unmarried girls in the Jiang family.
The old lady pondered for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Who was the man who spoke to you that day?"
Jiang Fei's mind raced, and she said truthfully, "It's Pei Jing."
The room suddenly became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
The teacup in the old lady's hand fell to the ground with a "bang", and broken porcelain pieces flew everywhere. Yao's face turned pale, and the aunt from the third room even covered her mouth directly.
"Who are you talking about?" The old lady's voice trembled.
Jiang Fei: "It's Prince Zhaoning Pei Jing."
"How could you..." The old lady was shocked: "How could you be involved with him?"
"I was just asking for directions," Jiang Fei said. "Grandmother, think about it. How could Pei Jing and I possibly get involved in such a quarrel? I would definitely avoid people like that. The Third Young Master Wei must have misunderstood."
The old lady seemed to ponder her words for a while, and after a while, she believed her 70% of it. "As for Prince Zhaoning, the farther you stay away from her, the better. Don't have anything to do with him."
Jiang Fei glanced at the other people in the room.
There are so many people in the Jiang family. If Pei Jing wants to kill her entire family, how much karma of killing will he create?
"Did you hear that?!"
Jiang Fei was lost in thought, and only came back to her senses when the old lady shouted at her, "I heard it. Then... do you need me to explain to Wei Sanlang?"
"What are you explaining?" Jiang Rulin suddenly interrupted, "Wei Sanlang is already saving your face by saying this."
"Grandma hasn't said anything, so why do you have the right to speak?" Jiang Fei glanced over.
"you……"
"Alright!" the old lady interrupted. "It's really inappropriate for an unmarried girl like you to come forward. I'll take care of this matter myself. Fei girl, please go down."
Jiang Fei left the main house and not long after walking, she heard voices coming from the other side again.
He kept everything secret from her, treating her like an outsider.
It seems that the original owner had a very difficult life in the Jiang family, otherwise she would not have regarded a maid as a life-saving straw and let Yunxiang lead everything.
After a while, the ladies from several rooms came out of the old lady's room one after another, with Yao and Jiang Rulin at the end.
After everyone had left, Yao said, "Control your expression from now on. You can't even hide your thoughts on your face. Do you think your grandmother is easy to fool?"
Jiang Rulin was already feeling aggrieved, and after being lectured by Yao, she felt even more indignant.
"My daughter just doesn't want to accept it. The one betrothed to the Wei family is the second daughter of the Jiang family, and this should have been mine."
Yao suddenly stopped and looked around vigilantly. Fortunately, there was no one else around except her personal maid.
She lowered her voice and said, "Don't mention this matter again. Be careful, there are ears on the other side of the wall."
"But……"
"No buts." Yao interrupted her, took Jiang Rulin's hand and comforted her, "Rulin, you should know that if you gain something, you must lose something. If you get something from her, you must give her something to balance it out. Besides, marrying Wei Sanlang may not be a good thing."
As soon as the two left, a person appeared at the corner of the corridor.
