Chapter 39 The Heroine's Halo
Wei Ciying quickly bowed and saluted, "Your Highness."
Pei Jing looked at the top of Wei Ciying's head, his eyes soft and uncommon. "No need to be so polite. What are you doing?"
Wei Ciying straightened up, her fingers unconsciously gathering the handkerchief, "I wanted to pick some honeysuckle to make flower dew."
"Can you make floral dew?" Pei Jing picked one with interest.
Wei Ciying said truthfully: "I don't know how to do it. I want my sister-in-law, Miss Jiang Er, to teach me."
Pei Jing's eyebrows twitched slightly, "She can make flower dew?"
Jiang Fei borrowed a bamboo basket from the nun in the temple and walked back. On the way, she picked some green leaves and spread them in the basket so that she could put the honeysuckle in it later.
This path is quiet and is located in the back mountain of Jinglian Temple, so there are not many pilgrims coming and going.
Just around the corner is the place where honeysuckle is picked. Jiang Fei was afraid that Wei Ciying would wait for a long time, so she quickened her pace.
When they reached the corner, a man suddenly jumped out from the woods and blocked Jiang Fei's way with his knife-holding hand.
She knew this person; he was Duan Jiu, Pei Jing's personal bodyguard.
Just as Jiang Fei was about to speak, the voices of Pei Jing and Wei Ciying talking came from the other end of the path.
"This flower needs to be picked with the stem." Pei Jing said in a gentle voice.
"is that so?"
"Yes, you want to pick the one on top?"
While Duan Jiu wasn't paying attention, Jiang Fei bent down and slipped under his arm. Duan Jiu reached out to grab her, but saw Jiang Fei stopped after taking two steps and stuck her head out to look at the other side.
Under the tree, Pei Jing climbed down a branch of honeysuckle from high up and was pulling Ren Wei Ciying to pick it.
Wei Ciying blushed slightly as she held onto the vine and said, "Thank you, Your Highness. I'll do it myself."
Pei Jing didn't let go and said gently, "It's okay. I happen to be free, so I'll give you a hand. It's hard for you to reach it from such a high place."
During the days that Jiang Fei was recuperating in the nunnery, she hadn't seen Pei Jing and thought he had returned to Beijing, but it turned out that he was still here.
Pei Jing really liked Wei Ciying, just as it was written in the book.
He looked at Wei Ciying gently and after she picked one branch, he climbed down another branch for her to pick, which was very considerate.
Wei Ciying's face showed a rare sense of uneasiness and anxiety.
Jiang Fei couldn't help but be shocked.
Look, this is how the heroine is treated. Even the madman hides his true nature in front of Wei Ciying. This bastard pretends to be a decent human being. If Jiang Fei hadn't known his character in advance, she would have been easily fooled by his current appearance.
She didn't remember whether this plot was in the book or not, and she didn't know whether she should rescue Wei Ciying or let the story continue.
Jiang Fei was hesitating whether to go over and disturb them when someone pulled her clothes.
She turned around and glared at Duan Jiu, pointed her finger in front of him, and then wiped it towards her neck as a threat.
Duan Jiu was stunned by her action, then the corner of his mouth twitched, and he shook his head at her, signaling her not to go over.
Jiang Fei stuck her head out to take a peek again. The panic on Wei Ciying's face became more and more intense. The handkerchief in her hand was already full of honeysuckle. She looked over here frequently, probably wondering why Jiang Fei hadn't come yet.
Jiang Fei stood up, stomped her hands on the ground twice, and said loudly, "Ciying, I found the bamboo basket."
She walked around the bushes and was deliberately taken aback when she saw Pei Jing. "The prince is here too."
Pei Jing's expression was indifferent, his eyes fell on the back of Jiang Fei, where Duan Jiu was standing, and there was a subtle displeasure in his eyes.
Seeing Jiang Fei, Wei Ciying felt relieved. She bowed to Pei Jing and ran towards Jiang Fei.
"sister in law."
"sister in law?"
A short snort of laughter escaped from Pei Jing's throat, with an inexplicable meaning, like a teasing or a mockery.
Wei Ciying pursed her lips and stood behind Jiang Fei.
Jiang Fei slowly approached with the basket in hand and bowed first, "Your Highness."
After saying that, he started picking flowers.
Pei Jing seemed to have no intention of leaving. He stood by and watched the two of them picking flowers, occasionally chatting with Wei Ciying.
"Did Miss Wei ever go to Jiangnan when she was young?"
Wei Ciying lowered her head and spoke softly, "Yes, I went there to visit relatives in Jiangnan when I was six or seven years old."
Jiang Fei was thoughtful. It seemed that Pei Jing had really put in a lot of effort to pursue Wei Ciying. He even knew where Wei Ciying had been when she was a child.
Pei Jing nodded. "Did you encounter any unforgettable people or events in Jiangnan?"
"Unforgettable person?" Wei Ciying was stunned. "No, there is one unforgettable thing..."
Jiang Fei had been paying attention to the two of them, and naturally noticed the flash of coldness in Pei Jing's eyes.
Jiang Fei immediately became alert. Why would someone go crazy if he didn't have anyone he couldn't forget?
It seemed that Jiang Fei's gaze was too substantial. Pei Jing squinted at her and asked, "What about you?"
Jiang Fei was surprised that Pei Jing would ask her this question suddenly. She came across the book halfway through, and the book was not written when she was a child, so how could she know?
"I didn't." Jiang Fei chose an answer that wouldn't be wrong. "I grew up in Beijing and never..."
Pei Jing didn't seem to care about her answer. Before Jiang Fei finished speaking, he turned to look at Wei Ciying.
Jiang Fei: “…” You bastard!
I shouldn't be here, I should be underground.
The two chatted for a few more sentences, and then Pei Jing left for something.
As soon as he left, both of them breathed a sigh of relief.
Jiang Fei patted his chest and said, "Finally, I've sent this ancestor away."
Wei Ciying looked at her, "Sister-in-law, are you afraid of Prince Zhaoning?"
Jiang Fei couldn't explain how she felt about Pei Jing. She was a little afraid, but mainly because she was afraid that he would go crazy for no reason. But in her heart, she felt that he was not as bad as the rumors said.
She didn't answer but asked, "What about you?"
Wei Ciying thought for a moment and said, "I actually think that King Zhaoning is not as scary as the rumors say."
The basket was almost full, enough for making flower dew. The two of them carried the flowers back and borrowed the kitchen from the nun. They worked until the afternoon and finally finished making it. They stored it in bamboo tubes and ceramic jars.
Wei Mingzhen went up the mountain in the afternoon, and after seeing Wei Ciying, he went down the mountain again.
Jiang Fei just took a nap for half an hour and missed her target perfectly. She only heard Wei Ciying say that Wei Mingzhen would come tomorrow morning.
…
The next day, Wei Mingzhen arrived around noon.
Jiang Fei got up early this morning and decided to show Wei Mingzhen how virtuous she was and show off her cooking skills.
The injury on her left hand had not yet healed, so it took her a little longer than usual to cook. Fortunately, she managed to finish the meal in time for noon and asked Jiutao to take it to the side yard and set up a full table under the locust tree in the yard.
The last dish of Wensi tofu was placed on the table. Jiang Fei nodded with satisfaction and asked Jiutao to invite the two brothers and sisters of the Wei family to come out.
The first rule to conquer a male supporting role: show your strengths.
Wei Ciying walked over from the corridor and looked at the table full of dishes in surprise, "Today's vegetarian dishes are so sumptuous?"
Jiang Fei pursed her lips and smiled, "Thinking of the hard work that Third Young Master Wei had put in going up the mountain, I specially prepared some home-cooked dishes."
"You did it?"
Wei Ciying was surprised and turned to pull Wei Mingzhen down from the room. "Brother, come quickly! Sister-in-law has cooked a special meal for you."
Wei Mingzhen was wearing an indigo-blue gown, and he looked a little uncomfortable when Wei Ciying pulled him down.
Jiang Fei probably guessed that she had been a little too forceful the last time they met, which made Wei Mingzhen uncomfortable. She decided to take it slow from now on, like boiling a frog in warm water, and she must boil Wei Mingzhen thoroughly.
