Chapter 31 It’s time to settle our accounts

Jiang Fei didn't hear any sound and thought Pei Jing was trying to scare her.

Just as he was about to speak, more than a dozen pairs of green eyes suddenly lit up in the darkness, followed by the sound of wolf howls that echoed throughout the dense forest.

Pei Jing stared at the direction where the wolves appeared. "What do you think? Are you still not going to let me go?"

Jiang Fei picked up a burning stick from the fire. She couldn't trust anyone at this time, let alone someone who wanted to kill her. The only person she could trust was herself.

She couldn't rule out the possibility that after freeing Pei Jing, he would feed her to the wolves, so that he could kill her effortlessly.

Jiang Fei gripped the burning stick tightly, the firelight illuminating her pale face.

The wolves were already within ten steps of each other. The leading gray wolf was as big as a large dog, and saliva seemed to be hanging from its fangs.

"One last chance." Pei Jing's voice sounded behind her, with a hint of amusement, "Untie me, or we'll be fed to the wolves together."

Jiang Fei gritted her teeth and tightened her grip on the stick. "I have no choice. Either I die in your hands, or I die in your and the wolf's hands."

Pei Jing suddenly chuckled, and the laughter seemed particularly strange amid the wolf howls.

Jiang Fei didn't dare to look back distractedly and had to focus all her attention on the wolves in front.

She had no confidence at all, and could even say that this battle might be a sure death. She could only hope that if by chance she could kill one more wolf to force the pack back and wait until people came to rescue her.

This time the wolves didn't observe for long and swarmed over directly.

Jiang Fei's heart sank, and he swung the burning stick in his hand. Sparks flew like broken gold, drawing an orange-red arc of light in the night rain.

Just as a wolf pounced towards Jiang Fei, the sound of cloth tearing suddenly came from behind her.

Then a white figure came breaking through the wind and rushed towards the wolf pack like a ghost. The wind raised by his clothes instantly raised the flames of the campfire a foot higher.

Pei Jing's movements were incredibly fast. His fingers turned into claws and stabbed directly into the wolf's eye sockets.

The wolf suddenly let out a shrill scream, and as Pei Jing pulled out his fingers, blood splattered on his snow-white clothes.

He casually threw the wolf's corpse away, and with a flash of his body, he grabbed the neck of another wolf. With a crisp "click", the wolf's head drooped at a strange angle.

The remaining wolves were instantly enraged and pounced on them together.

Pei Jing chuckled instead, and when a wolf leaped towards him, he leaned back, bending his body into an incredible arc.

When the wolf jumped over his body, he grabbed the wolf's tail, then exerted force and swung the wolf up and smashed it to the ground.

Jiang Fei was completely shocked. This was not the way humans should fight at all. It was as if they were born to kill.

She held the burning wood and watched him move among the wolves, each move bringing up a puff of blood.

This man is even more ferocious than those wolves!

Suddenly, a wolf came around from behind and attacked Pei Jing.

Jiang Fei didn't have time to think, he raised the burning stick and rushed forward, "Be careful!"

The wooden stick hit the wolf's head hard, sparks flying. The wolf felt pain and turned to pounce on Jiang Fei.

Just as the wolf was about to bite Jiang Fei's throat, a figure flashed by, Pei Jing grabbed the wolf's throat and threw it several meters away.

The last few wolves finally realized the danger and tried to run away with their tails between their legs.

A cold light flashed in Pei Jing's eyes, and he picked up the burning stick on the ground and threw it out.

With a "whoosh", the wooden stick pierced through the belly of a wolf and was nailed to the mud.

He turned to look at Jiang Fei, the scarlet in his eyes had not yet faded, and his dark eyes were surging with emotions that she could not understand.

"Now..." Pei Jing approached step by step, his voice low and dangerous, "It's time to settle our accounts."

By daybreak, the sudden rain had just stopped, and the puddles reflected the gray walls, black tiles, and lanterns under the eaves.

A black horse came galloping through the puddles. When it turned the corner at the end of the alley, the rider suddenly tightened the reins and landed in front of the vermilion-painted gate of Jiang Mansion. He almost rolled and crawled over to knock on the door.

The door of Jiang Mansion was quickly knocked open and the visitor quickly entered the Jiang Mansion.

Jiang Bingshi and Yao were called up by the servants as soon as they woke up and hurried to the front yard.

The person who brought the news rushed from Jinglian Temple overnight. He was soaked all over and didn't even have time to drink a sip of tea before he told everyone that the second young lady had disappeared in the mountains.

Yao was not in a hurry after hearing this. "I thought it was something serious. I think she is just having fun and wandering around."

The person who brought the news was the groom of the mansion. He said anxiously, "Madam, the second young lady is really missing! She originally went to ask for lotus from the lay Buddhist Qinglian, but she didn't return until the afternoon. The second young lady's maid went to look for her and found out that the young lady had left the lay Buddhist's residence long ago. No one in the Jinglian Nunnery had seen her since. I left last night to report the news. By then, the nunnery had already sent out people to look for her. She must have gone to the back mountain."

Yao rolled her eyes and said, "Since she went to the back mountain, why don't we just wait for her to come back? She was so flustered, I thought something big had happened."

"But," the groom said anxiously, "there are wild beasts in the back mountains."

"There's a wild beast." Jiang Bingshi was anxious. "Oh, Madam, what should we do?"

Yao's expression finally changed. "Hasn't anyone been found yet?"

"No," said the groom.

Yao complained sullenly, "How troublesome! Such a grown man, yet he chose to go to the back mountain instead of walking on the good road."

Jiang Bingshi thought for a moment, then stood up and said, "Call the servants from the mansion, and I'll go find Lieutenant Liu to borrow some men to go up the mountain and look for the person."

Yao quickly pulled him back, "Master, isn't this noise a bit too loud? If that girl was just playing around..."

Before Jiang Bingshi could reply, the groom said, "Master, there's no need to go. Someone has already gone to the palace to report the news. Lieutenant Liu has already set out with his men."

Jiang Bingshi and Yao were both shocked.

"Go to the palace to report the news! Why do you want to go to the palace to report the news?"

The driver said, "Because Prince Zhaoning also disappeared."

Yao slumped back into her chair. "Did they disappear together?"

The driver glanced at Yao secretly and said, "Someone saw Prince Zhaoning following the second young lady to the back mountain."

The hall suddenly became silent.

Jiang Rufei and Pei Jing disappeared together. Even if they were found, if the news got out that a man and a woman were alone spending the night in the mountains, even if nothing happened, what good things could those gossipers outside say about them?

Jiang Bingshi was a spineless man. When he heard about this, he panicked and asked, "Madam, what should we do?"

Yao said soothingly, "Master, please don't worry. Don't send the servants for now. I'll go and inform Mother first and see what she thinks."

Jiang Bingshi nodded repeatedly, "Okay, okay, Madam, please go quickly."
