Chapter 23 Wen Ling, I don't want to act anymore
Wen Ling was taken away by Shang Chen.
Unable to overtake him, Wen He could only take the drunk Yan Qingli back to school. But ten minutes passed, and he let Yan Qingli stand there blankly, hugging the lamppost by the roadside, without moving.
Liu Chang hasn't left yet.
He waited by the side for a long time, and adhering to the principle of doing a good deed to the end, he took a deep breath and stepped forward to help Yan Qingli up: "Yan, let me take you back to school."
Yan Qingli was very quiet at the moment. I don't know if she recognized Wen He. She didn't make a fuss and just gave a soft "hmm".
Upon hearing the voice, Wen He frowned slightly, clicked his tongue in annoyance, and blocked their path: "Brother, what are you doing? You couldn't steal my sister, so you're trying to steal my job now?"
Liu Chang looked embarrassed.
After being threatened by the two of them, I thought they were going to beat me up in anger, and I was even prepared to protect my head. Fortunately, it was just a bluff.
But Wen He had such a strong presence that Liu Chang always felt inferior when speaking to him: "I don't think you intend to leave either."
Perhaps feeling that he was forced to obey Wen Ling's orders and that he couldn't explain himself if he didn't personally escort her back, Liu Chang added, "Yan is a member of our club, and I will escort her safely to school, so you can rest assured."
Wen He chuckled: "I'm definitely not worried, but I'm just afraid that some people might get drunk and cause trouble, and you won't be able to handle it."
With that, he turned off his phone, put it back in his pocket, put his arm around her shoulder and took her from him, then turned back to Liu Chang and said, "Let's go."
"No, let's not..."
After a long silence, Yan Qingli suddenly spoke up, struggling free from Wen He's grasp: "You have a girlfriend now, so it's better if we keep our distance."
Wen He stood there stunned for a long time, without making a move.
When he found out that Bai Weiwei had deleted him without his consent, he got into an argument with her, feeling that it was disrespectful to his privacy and to Yan Qingli.
He wanted to add the person back and apologize.
Bai Weiwei was crying next to him, saying that she felt insecure in a long-distance relationship. She said that he knew this girl had feelings for him, so why did he still let her get close? Did he really like her a little too?
Perhaps he felt that what she said made some sense, or perhaps he was subconsciously avoiding something, so he didn't continue to do anything, and the matter was left unresolved. After school started, they would occasionally meet at school, but they would pass each other like strangers, without even looking at each other.
Tonight, he can stop meddling in other people's business.
However, Shang Chen unreasonably assigned him the task of delivering the person. He was not happy about it, but he still had some conscience and did not want to see anything happen to her.
Now that Yan Qingli has said so, Wen He thought he would breathe a sigh of relief, but he didn't. Instead, he asked her with a tense expression, "Are you sure?"
Yan Qingli did not respond.
Although spring has arrived, the night wind still carries a hint of chill, stinging one's face.
Yan Qingli blinked, trying hard not to let her tears fall. She grabbed Liu Chang's wrist and pulled him in the opposite direction: "Come on, stop spacing out."
Wen He remained standing in the same spot.
As he watched their figures gradually shrink and disappear from his sight, a nameless anger suddenly rose in his chest. He shoved his cheeks in frustration, his face full of displeasure.
…
Shang Chen drove over.
Throughout the journey, he remained somber and silent.
When he arrived at the school gate, he parked the car, but the doors were locked, and Wen Ling couldn't open them.
She paused for a moment, then turned her head, feigning ignorance, and asked, "Shang Chen, are you unhappy?"
There was a moment of silence.
Shang Chen finally spoke, his voice very soft: "Wen Ling, in your eyes, is there any difference between me and your vice minister?"
His voice betrayed no emotion.
Wen Ling thought for a moment and said honestly, "You are all very good people."
Shang Chen gave a cold snort.
They're all very nice people... so it seems they have a pretty good impression of that man too.
Otherwise, why would she smile at him while singing love songs together?
Just thinking about it made Shang Chen furious.
Not to mention the inner monologue of someone waiting for her to reply to their message for ages outside her dorm building, only to see her laughing and singing love songs with someone else on the school forum.
"So, I'm not your only one," Shang Chen looked at her. "Right?"
Wen Ling frowned, finding his words somewhat inexplicable and not understanding them, but she still honestly coaxed him, "No, I deliberately kept it from you."
She scratched her head, hesitating between betraying Yan Qingli and taking the blame herself: "I just thought we could all have some fun together."
This shouldn't count as breaking my promise to him, right? I didn't go out to eat with anyone else alone, and I didn't forget to reply to his messages or ignore him!
Shang Chen maintained his stern expression: "Why don't you tell the truth?"
Wen Ling's nimble fingers traced circles on her leg, her voice lacking confidence: "I'm afraid you'll get angry."
"So, Lingling thinks that she won't be angry anymore once I find out the truth?"
Countless people call her Lingling.
Only that one sound gave her goosebumps.
This was also the first time Shang Chen had called her that.
Wen Ling licked her lips, reached out familiarly, and gently tugged at his sleeve, saying, "Just this once..."
Shang Chen didn't appreciate it at all. Instead, he rubbed his nose wearily and said, "How many times has this happened, Wen Ling? You never take my words to heart. In the end, I have no right to interfere with you, do I?"
Wen Ling felt as if someone had grabbed her by the neck, and suddenly she couldn't speak. She had never seen Shang Chen like this before, cold and unfamiliar. Even last time, when he deliberately ignored her, Wen Ling could feel a hint of indulgence under his anger.
As long as she says something gentle, Shang Chen can't keep up the act.
But now, Shang Chen seems to be really angry, and even her deliberate attempts to soften her stance are no longer effective.
“I didn’t… say that.” Wen Ling’s eyes showed a hint of helplessness. “You can tell me what to do, Shang Chen.”
"I can..." Shang Chen mocked himself, "He can too. Anyone who's good to you can take care of you, right?"
She shook her head and said no.
She was just a little too lenient with him, but Shang Chen didn't believe it.
"Wen Ling, I don't want to act anymore."
A look of confusion appeared in Wen Ling's eyes. What did this mean? What was she acting out? Before she could figure it out, a large dark shadow suddenly appeared in front of her, and Shang Chen's exquisite features magnified in front of her.
Wen Ling hadn't yet realized what had happened.
Because she was distracted, Shang Chen lightly bit her lip in annoyance.
A sharp pain shot through her lips, and Wen Ling belatedly realized what was happening. Her mind went blank for a moment, and she shoved him away, covering her lips with her wide, doe-like eyes as she stared at him in disbelief.
It was as if my soul had been ripped out.
Wen Ling couldn't hear or see anything, but she reacted instinctively. She pushed hard against the locked car door, her stubborn back looking thin and pitiful.
Shang Chen unlocked the lock.
Wen Ling pushed open the door and got out of the car, running away without hesitation.
Shang Chen followed closely behind, calling her name a few times. Just as he was about to catch up, his phone rang. He picked it up impatiently and glanced at it. He wanted to turn it off immediately, but after looking at the caller ID, he hesitated and answered.
The other party only said one sentence: "Brother Chen, something happened to your mother."
…
Wen Ling ran back to her dormitory in one breath.
On the way, she couldn't hold back her tears, wiping them away as she cried. She didn't know what had happened and couldn't understand why Shang Chen would suddenly kiss her.
Wen Ling's mind was completely blank.
While crying, I suddenly felt very angry.
She was furious that Shang Chen hadn't told her beforehand and had just kissed her so abruptly. She cursed inwardly: How could I not have realized he was such a jerk!
In the dormitory, the roommates were already in bed.
The lights were still on. Hearing the noise, they all peeked out from behind the bed curtains, asking if she had had a good time at the team-building event.
Wen Ling sat at the table, head down, and said she had a lot of fun.
Yang Lan remembered something and reminded her, "By the way, Lingling, did you see that black bag on your desk? It was delivered by Shang Chen about an hour or two ago. He said you received it and to remember to reply to him."
Wen Ling didn't want to hear anything about Shang Chen at all. She hummed in response and threw the black bag into the trash can. No matter what it was, she didn't want to deal with it anymore.
Her poor lips still ached, constantly reminding Wen Ling of the terrible things that had happened tonight.
Lying in bed, she kept her eyes tightly closed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. She didn't know how much time had passed when the rhythmic snoring of her roommates filled the quiet dormitory, making it even harder for Wen Ling to sleep.
I don't know how much time has passed.
The phone, which was lying to the side, lit up when a message came in.
The blinding light filled the surroundings. Wen Ling frowned tightly, squinted as she unlocked the door, and glanced at the time. It was already 4:32 a.m.
Shang Chen sent me an apology message: "I'm sorry, I acted impulsively today."
Wen Ling bit her lip, not wanting to reply at all.
Even when she felt the pain on her lips, she blocked his messages, threw them to her feet, and forced herself to fall asleep.
…
Wen Ling was always worried that she would meet Shang Chen again.
After several days of anxious anticipation without encountering him again, Wen Ling gradually relaxed her guard and, as if to oblige, went to check if Shang Chen had sent her any messages.
Unexpectedly, no.
Especially when Wen He, who rarely had time to eat with her in the cafeteria, mentioned that Shang Chen hadn't been to school for several days, Wen Ling felt a pang of panic.
"You haven't been to school for several days...?" Wen Ling asked, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know."
Wen He said, "I guess something happened at home, so he took leave."
Although she knew it was most likely unrelated to her, Wen Ling couldn't help but ask, "Since which day did you stop coming?"
"I really don't remember that." Wen He chewed on his chopsticks. "Let me think... it seems like it was that day, the day you went on team building. I went with him to look for you, and he didn't go back to the dorm that night."
Wen Ling's face paled slightly.
Wen He, oblivious, asked her with a puzzled look, "Hey, sis, wasn't it Shang Chen who took you back to school that day? Don't you know what happened to him? Or, did he do anything unusual?"
Wen Ling's face turned pale, then red, then pale again. She stammered, "I...I don't know either...he didn't tell me."
Wen He nodded without suspicion: "Alright, it's better if you don't come. It's annoying to see you like this."
Wen Ling ate absentmindedly.
After finishing her meal and returning to her dorm, she hesitated for a long time, worried about saving face. Finally, she unblocked him and sent him a message: "Are you okay?"
