Chapter Eighteen: Extorting Money, Grain in Hand

"You can go find whoever wants to treat your illness; I'm not going to play along!"

Xu Nian's gaze was firm, and with a wave of her hand, she announced the fate of those who had slandered her.

Upon hearing this, the people were immediately terrified and knelt down, trembling, pleading, "Immortal, please forgive us this once! We truly know we were wrong!"

Without Xu Nian's medicine, how could they possibly continue their journey?

[The streamer is so handsome! Family, I'm even skipping my meal to watch this!]

[That's right! I think these people deserved what they got for their evil deeds.]

[The general is so handsome, so handsome, waaaaah!]

"It's not that I can't save you. But why should I give you the medicine that I almost risked my life for?"

Xu Nian spoke slowly and deliberately, looking down at these ungrateful wretches, "If you want the medicine, trade it for something valuable. If I think the price is right, I'll give it to you."

It wasn't that she was greedy for money, but she was disheartened, yet she remembered her master's instructions, so she resorted to this desperate measure.

The crying stopped immediately, and they huddled together anxiously, searching for anything of value on their bodies.

At that moment, fewer people meant fewer mouths to feed, and the chances of survival for the others were much greater. So those who were not sick watched coldly, with no intention of stepping forward to speak up for them.

Cuiqing thought the same thing. She snorted and was about to go back into the house when someone suddenly tugged at her arm, causing her to stumble and almost fall.

"It's all your fault, you have to take responsibility!"

The group of people were quick-witted and immediately tried to pin all the blame on Cuiqing. "It was she who sowed discord, you fortune teller! She has to take responsibility for this too!"

Xu Nian didn't point it out; instead, she was happy to see this scene.

She had heard how Cuiqing had insulted her, Da Bao, and Er Bao. If she let her off so easily, wouldn't that be too lenient?

Thinking of this, Xu Nian made a spell behind her back and threw it at Cui Qing, saying with a smile, "Hehe, they said you have to take responsibility."

"Take responsibility? Why should I take responsibility!"

Upon hearing this, Cuiqing became indignant and screamed, "You said those things yourselves, yet you're blaming me? Is there no justice or law? I won't take responsibility, so what!"

After finishing her speech, Cuiqing was panting heavily. When she looked up, she met Xu Nian's smiling eyes and immediately sensed something was wrong.

"But I see that your face is dark and your brows are bloodshot. Tsk tsk, if you don't do some good deeds, you may not live much longer."

Xu Nian was a master of deception, feigning sorrow and lamentation while speaking with great conviction.

"Wh-what?"

Upon hearing this, Cuiqing turned pale with fright and took a half-step back in a panic.

Although she said she didn't believe Xu Nian was some kind of demigod, seeing her escape safely from the bandit king and heal so many people, she couldn't help but believe her a little.

Now, she's actually saying she's going to die soon?

After a moment of shock, Cuiqing forced herself to remain calm and said, "Don't think I'll believe you just because you're trying to fool me. What do you mean by 'not long for this world'? You're probably just spouting nonsense!"

Hearing this, Xu Nian was not annoyed, and chuckled softly, "If you don't believe me, that's fine. I was just kindly reminding you."

As she spoke, Xu Nian silently recited the incantation in her mind. Cui Qing, who was still half-believing and half-doubting, suddenly cried out "Ouch!" and felt a splitting headache.

"Look, it's already flared up."

Xu Nian clicked her tongue and said slowly, "Right now it's just a headache, but after a few days it will be an excruciating pain that will pierce to the bone. No medicine will be able to help, and you can only suffer from this physical pain."

Even if Cuiqing didn't believe it, she was currently so terribly stressed that she wanted to roll on the ground, and her heart was pounding.

Could it really be as Xu Nian said?

"The fortune teller never lies. If you want to live, you'd better listen to him obediently."

The villagers spoke with great confidence, clearly having complete faith in Xu Nian.

[Host, did you secretly use a talisman again?!]

[Good job! This Cuiqing needs to be taught a lesson, otherwise she'll really think she can act so arrogantly.]

Let me see the general.

Finally, Cuiqing walked up to Xu Nian with a heavy heart, bowed her head gently, and said, "It was my fault just now, please save me, Immortal."

Despite her dissatisfaction and disgust, Cuiqing knew the importance of her life, so she had no choice but to lower her head and beg Xu Nian for mercy.

“I told you, all you need to do is do good deeds.”

Xu Nian turned to the side and said calmly, "If you do good deeds, your luck will offset the disaster, so you don't need to worry about any problems in the future."

Cuiqing turned to look at the villagers with eager eyes, hardened her heart, gritted her teeth, and said, "Fine, you help them get treatment, and I'll pay for it."

She would never have been so kind if it hadn't affected her!

What money are you referring to?

Xu Nian shook her head and pointed to the tattered grain sack next to her. "In this day and age, grain is money. I want you to give me 70% of your grain in exchange for this life-saving medicine."

"What?"

Cuiqing was stunned and stammered for a long time, unable to utter a single word.

She had assumed Xu Nian wanted money and was prepared to hand over the hairpins and other items she had smuggled from the Minister's mansion, but Xu Nian actually wanted food!

[Oh dear, isn't the streamer going too far? This is food! Without food, people will die.]

[Are the people upstairs either new here or just overly sympathetic? Didn't you see what they did to the streamer before?]

[Exactly. Besides, isn't it worth exchanging 70% of your food for a chance to survive?]

Gu Zhan watched coldly without saying a word.

He felt that Xu Nian had done nothing wrong.

For the sake of these people, Xu Nian ventured deep into the mountains and risked his life to obtain medicine, yet he was subjected to such treatment. Even if he didn't save them, probably no one would say anything.

Right now, all she wants is food, which is perfectly reasonable.

However, as for why Cuiqing suddenly had a headache...

Gu Zhan chuckled almost imperceptibly, a hint of interest appearing in his eyes.

He did notice the little girl quickly forming hand seals, which must have been a method passed down from her ancestors.

After a long internal struggle, Cuiqing finally compromised, "Fine, I'll exchange 70% of the grain for it."

When Cuiqing handed the grain to Xu Nian, she felt as if her heart was bleeding. She watched helplessly as her grain went into someone else's bag, but she didn't dare to utter a sound.

"Sister, it's finished!"

Just then, Da Bao and Er Bao came running over and hugged Xu Nian's legs.

"That's amazing."

Xu Nian naturally didn't forget her previous promise. She took out two sugar cubes and put them in the hands of the two dolls, saying softly, "Go play over there. Your older sister still has things to do."

Da Bao and Er Bao nodded hurriedly and skipped away.

Having taken Cuiqing's food, Xu Nian didn't delay any longer and immediately used medicine on everyone.

Those who thought they were going to die on the spot were all filled with gratitude and expressed their heartfelt thanks.

Only Cuiqing, her face full of resentment, huddled in the corner, inwardly furious.

That damn Xu Nian...

I will definitely make her suffer in the future!
