Chapter Forty-Seven: An Unexpected Event Descends

[General, what happened? Are you injured?]

[Damn, the general is so powerful, what could possibly hurt him?]

[Hurry, streamer, help me out! Otherwise, the general will be gone!]

Gu Zhan rarely showed such a weak side in front of Xu Nian, so Xu Nian panicked a little, leaned down and asked anxiously, "Gu Zhan, what's wrong with you?"

At first, Gu Zhan didn't make a sound at all, as if he had fallen asleep.

But as Xu Nian continued to ask questions, Gu Zhan slowly raised his eyes, gritted his teeth, and said, "I was bitten by a snake, and it's poisonous."

After speaking, he closed his eyes weakly, and his arms fell to his sides.

After learning the reason, Xu Nian understood and immediately took out the relevant medicine, pouring it onto Gu Zhan's lap with a hint of reluctance.

His injury seemed to have dragged on for a while, so he almost missed the best time for treatment.

"hiss."

A sharp pain swept over him, and Gu Zhan instinctively gasped, his body involuntarily curling up.

"Bear with it, it'll be over soon."

Seeing that Gu Zhan was in so much pain, Xu Nian softened her movements and spoke gently.

Gu Zhan felt the unbearable pain in his wound and clenched his fists, looking up at Xu Nian's face.

For some reason, looking at Xu Nian seemed to alleviate his pain slightly.

"What happened?"

Xu Nian quickened her pace and inquired with concern.

Given Gu Zhan's abilities, a mere venomous snake shouldn't have been able to harm him, so how did he end up in such a state?

Upon hearing this, Gu Zhan pointed to a wild boar lying on the ground beside him, "I was hunting it, and when I was cleaning the meat, a snake suddenly ran out and wrapped itself around my leg. I instinctively kicked it, and then I got bitten."

Normally, he would never have been so badly harassed by a venomous snake.

But just now Gu Zhan was in a hurry to prepare the meat, and...

After saying these words, Gu Zhan's face was covered in sweat again, and Xu Nian quickly fell silent and neatly bandaged his wound.

Although it was getting dark, it wasn't late at night yet, so Xu Nian made a quick decision: "Let's rest for a while before going back."

Gu Zhan's injury was not serious. Taking any rash actions would not be conducive to his recovery and might even leave him with long-term effects.

Gu Zhan didn't insist on his decision and silently agreed.

Fortunately, Xu Nian had just picked a lot of medicinal herbs, which would be useful.

Although his injuries were serious, they were not fatal and did not damage his bones. With the help of Xu Nian's medicine, his condition improved considerably in a short time.

"Phew, you scared me to death."

Seeing that Gu Zhan's complexion had improved a lot, Xu Nian breathed a sigh of relief and slumped down beside him. "I didn't see you come back earlier, so I came up the mountain to find you myself."

"Be careful next time. If it weren't for me, you would be dead here today."

Gu Zhan did not refute this, admitting that today's incident was indeed caused by his underestimation of his opponent.

Night quietly descended.

Fearing that Gu Zhan's wound might suddenly reopen, Xu Nian did not act rashly. Instead, she took some meat from the side and prepared to warm it by the fire, making a simple dinner.

"You can go back first, I'm fine now."

Seeing that Xu Nian seemed a little tired, Gu Zhan pondered for a moment and said calmly.

"How can that be? We came together, so we definitely have to go back together."

Xu Nian disagreed, lit a fire and started roasting, speaking righteously.

Is the general worried about the streamer?

[They probably didn't want to take up the streamer's time. General is so kind.]

After a simple dinner, Gu Zhan felt he had regained his strength and tentatively stood up, leaning on a few trees for support.

Xu Nian watched him get up, and seeing that nothing unexpected happened, she looked away.

"I'm almost better, let's go."

Gu Zhan moved around in place for a while, then immediately spoke.

As night deepened, they couldn't possibly spend the night in the mountains; it simply wasn't safe.

Hearing this, Xu Nian nodded to indicate that she understood, and stepped forward to offer her arm, saying, "Help me walk, so it won't be too much trouble."

Looking at the little girl's smiling face, Gu Zhan didn't say anything, obediently got on her, and walked down the mountain step by step.

They walked slowly, much slower than when they came, but still a little faster than the average person.

"If anything seems wrong with your wound after you get back, send someone to find me immediately."

As she walked, Xu Nian kept talking to herself, her worry evident.

She knew Gu Zhan quite well; unless there was a life-threatening problem, he probably wouldn't have come to her for treatment. So she decided to make things clear now.

Upon hearing this, Gu Zhan hesitated for a moment before finally agreeing, "I understand, I will be careful."

The two of them followed the same route they had come from and successfully reached the foot of the mountain.

"Why would there be smoke in the city?"

As she walked, Xu Nian suddenly stopped, gazing at the silhouette of Li Cheng that she could see in the distance, a question lingering in her mind.

Gu Zhan also noticed the strangeness in Li Cheng's body, but after thinking it over, he didn't say anything.

"Let's go back and take a look first."

Xu Nian supported Gu Zhan, a bad premonition rising in her heart, and hurried back.

When the two returned to the city, the scene before them left Xu Nian frozen in place.

Thick smoke rose from the once bustling and prosperous city, the newly built houses were in ruins, the streets were littered with tattered clothes, and dozens of people lay on the ground, struggling in agony with their eyes closed.

What's wrong with you guys?!

Xu Nian panicked and rushed forward to help up the girl who was closest to her.

A rare look of surprise crossed Gu Zhan's eyes, and his expression became much more serious.

There was clearly a fierce battle taking place around the city, but there were soldiers stationed inside, so how could this be...?

The girl coughed violently for a while, and when she saw Xu Nian's face, tears welled up in her eyes. "Lord City Lord, you're finally back! Cough cough cough..."

"Don't rush, tell me slowly."

Everything before her eyes shocked Xu Nian. She tried her best to suppress her inner panic and said softly.

The girl slowly closed her eyes. "The crops have yielded a bountiful harvest, and we are all overjoyed. Without the City Lord, we would never be able to live such a happy life. So we thought we'd hold a banquet for you to thank you... cough cough cough..."

As she spoke, she seemed to choke on the smoke, then gritted her teeth and said firmly, "So we all prepared a feast, waiting for you to come back. But instead of you, we were greeted by a group of bandits."

"They burned, killed, and looted, and even threatened to empty the entire city!"

Upon hearing this, Xu Nian was startled, her hands clenched tightly in her sleeves, and she was speechless for a moment.

The girl's eyes were lifeless, and her voice was filled with sorrow, "My lord, what sins have we committed? We finally got a little better off, and then this happened."

"Should we not be alive?"
