Chapter 12 We Can't Be Together

Brother Wen is the oldest among this group of friends. He is almost fifty years old this year. Although he is old, he is young at heart. He is still a gangster and likes to hang out with friends in nightclubs.

In the past few years, Deng Shangwei was a follower of Brother Wen. He took over some small businesses from Brother Wen and only started his own business after gradually expanding the business.

The bosses present here are in similar situations to Deng Shangwei. They all used to follow Brother Wen.

Brother Wen had a big business before the millennium, but when Macau returned to China in 1999, Brother Wen was taken to Macau to gamble and lost most of his fortune there. Now he is badly damaged and is not as good as his former younger brother Deng Shangwei who is doing well in the seafood business.

Brother Wen was sitting on the sofa smoking, puffing out clouds of smoke. Hearing this, he laughed and scolded:

"Don't bring this up on me. What are you looking down on? I've known Xiao Deng for over ten years. Don't I know him better than you do?"

Deng Shangwei breathed a sigh of relief.

If Brother Wen doesn't say anything, he will have to drink a few more glasses tonight for fear that Brother Wen will think too much.

Precisely because Brother Wen is not doing as well as before, Deng Shangwei cannot embarrass Brother Wen in front of others. That would be too unfair.

Brother Wen had helped him in the past. Deng Shangwei didn't care whether others remembered his kindness or not. He just had to take care of himself.

Deng Shangwei was happy too early. Brother Wen wanted to cheer him up first and then suppress him. Seeing that Deng Shangwei really wanted to leave, he immediately said he would call Lily in.

"Lily didn't come tonight, so Xiao Deng couldn't even drink. Hurry up and invite Lily in."

As soon as Brother Wen spoke, everyone started shouting "Lily".

They are regular customers of the nightclub, and the owner of the nightclub must take good care of them. No matter why Lily didn't come before, Brother Wen has brought it up, so Lily must be there.

Deng Shangwei's face changed. He picked up his bag and was about to leave. The door of the private room was pushed open and a young woman in a dress walked in. It was the Lily that Brother Wen mentioned.

Lily is very youthful, with a bit of childishness between her eyebrows and eyes. She is somewhere between a woman and a girl, very pure, and does not look like a woman who makes a living in nightclubs at all.

When she saw Deng Shangwei, her eyes lit up immediately. But when she thought of Deng Shangwei's indifference, she felt hurt. Her eyes were sparkling and looked very endearing.

The boss who had insisted on toasting Deng Shangwei with wine earlier said in a sour tone, "Xiao Deng, I sent flowers and treated Lily to dinner, but she didn't even look at me. She has her whole heart tied to you, and you still had the heart to push Lily away. As a brother, I really don't understand you."

Lily walked up to Deng Shangwei and called out "Brother Deng", feeling at a loss as to what to do.

Deng Shangwei didn't even look at her. Lily raised her glass to toast him again, but Deng Shangwei refused to take it. Lily's cheeks turned red.

"Xiao Deng, it's hard to accept the kindness of a beautiful woman. If you want to go back, just drink the wine Lily offered you and leave!"

Brother Wen has spoken.

Should I drink this wine or not?

Deng Shangwei actually doesn't care for a glass of wine.

Not to mention one glass of wine, he can even drink several glasses of wine.

But it depends on who is toasting.

Drinking the wine that Lily offered her would send the wrong signal to her.

Deng Shangwei's fingers were touching the wine glass when he suddenly remembered what Wen Ying said on the phone tonight: "Uncle, I believe you."

Am I worthy of Wen Ying's trust?

Deng Shangwei was ashamed and his hand that was touching the wine glass shrank back as if he had been electrocuted.

"Brother Wen, my wife hasn't returned to Rongcheng, and there are only two children at home. I'm still a little worried about them. I'm going back tonight and will treat you to an apology another day."

Deng Shangwei insisted on leaving, and Brother Wen didn't stop him. He suppressed the others' clamor and patted Deng Shangwei on the shoulder: "Women are like clothes. If you don't like them, you can get new ones. But children are your own and you must take care of them. Go back, brothers, and make an appointment another day!"

Deng Shangwei left, taking Lily's heart with him.

Lily bit her lip and chased after him.

Deng Shangwei had already started the car. Lily leaned against the car window, tears welling in her eyes. "Brother Deng, you're so cruel. Tell me what's wrong with me and I'll change."

There's nothing wrong with Lily.

Although she works in a nightclub, Lily is actually a student at a music conservatory. The owner of the nightclub placed a piano in the lobby, and Lily was invited by the owner to play the piano.

Young, beautiful and educated, many of Deng Shangwei's boss friends wanted to pursue her, but Lily looked down on them. She fell in love with Deng Shangwei!

Deng Shangwei's heart was as hard as iron: "I made it clear last time. It's impossible for me to be with you. I love my wife very much."

"But we—"

Before Lily could finish her words, she was interrupted by Deng Shangwei, "We are nothing. Please move aside. I want to go back."

Deng Shangwei drove away, and Lily stood there staring blankly.

It was really strange. She had clearly felt that Deng Shangwei's attitude was softening, so why did he suddenly become tough and indifferent again?

Deng Shangwei saw Lily standing there motionless in the rearview mirror and frowned.

Lily is at this nightclub, so she can't come here anymore.

It was already past one in the morning when Deng Shangwei returned home. Everyone in the family was asleep. He took a quick shower to wash off the smell of cigarettes and alcohol he had picked up in the private room before going to bed.

Chen Li was sleeping in a daze and felt that there was someone beside her.

"You're back?"

"Um."

Deng Shangwei hugged her from behind and said, "Wife, I didn't drink."

Wife, I’m sorry.

Deng Shangwei buried his head in Chen Li's neck.

It was already past eight in the morning when Wen Ying woke up.

Today is Sunday. The two little cousins didn't go to school. They ran around the house early in the morning and shot each other with water guns. Deng Yaomei was soft-tempered and couldn't control them at all. Chen Li got angry and confiscated their water guns, and punished the brothers to reflect on their mistakes facing the wall.
