TV series, like movies, can be broadly categorized into three types:
The first type is both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
This kind of TV series has good reputation and good ratings. It is not easy to release one in a year, but once it is released, it will be a long-lasting and high-quality series that will be rebroadcast by TV stations every year.
For example, Wen Ying's generation has deep childhood memories of the reruns of "Journey to the West" and "The Legend of the New White Snake" during the winter and summer vacations, and later "My Fair Princess" was added.
These TV series were very popular when they were first aired, and when they were rebroadcast, old viewers were still willing to watch them again, and new viewers were also attracted.
Classics stand the test of time. Classic TV series create classic characters. Actors who are fortunate enough to star in such classic series can even reap the benefits of the role for a lifetime.
Of course, such classic dramas are hard to come by, as the script, production and actors are all essential factors. Small fame depends on promotion, big fame depends on luck. Wen Ying does know several TV dramas that will be popular in the future, but even if she is willing to lower her bottom line and become a plagiarist, there is no guarantee that she can replicate the classic.
Maybe it was because of a change of director, a change of actors, or even because of the wrong broadcast time, the original classic was ruined by Wen Ying.
Besides, it is impossible for Wen Ying to be a plagiarist. Her moral bottom line does not allow her to do so. Moreover, she has been reborn, but she can only copy. Doesn't Lawyer Wen have any face?
The second type is well received but not popular.
It's a TV series that is well-produced and has a good reputation, but its ratings are not satisfactory.
If the film is well made, will there be audiences to watch it?
No, the subject matter is not well chosen and the audience is too narrow. Even if a small number of viewers give it high praise, it will not work if it does not conform to the aesthetic tastes of the majority of the audience.
Television that is suitable for the whole family to watch together has a greater chance of achieving high ratings.
Classic dramas such as "Journey to the West", "Legend of the New White Snake" and "My Fair Princess" are suitable for the whole family to watch together in front of the TV.
The TV remote control is a manifestation of family discourse power. Most students like Wen Ying cannot control the remote control at home, and they watch whatever their parents watch.
If you want to watch Taiwanese idol dramas, unless they are introduced by satellite TV stations, you can only rent video discs and watch them secretly when your parents are not at home.
Of course, idol dramas are neither critically acclaimed nor commercially successful, and this is exactly the type of TV series that most parents would oppose!
The third type is popular but not well received.
The ratings may be good and it may be popular, but it cannot escape the category of a bad movie. The script that screenwriter Zhang prepared for Li Mengjiao falls into this category.
As for the TV series that are neither well-received nor popular, Wen Ying is too lazy to count them. They have poor production, bad scripts, actors' random acting, and directors' random directing. Such series are destined to fill the film library from the day they are completed.
Knowing that the script given by Screenwriter Zhang would be a hit, Wen Ying couldn't go against her conscience and say that Screenwriter Zhang was irresponsible.
They did give me a valuable script.
As for whether it is a bad movie or not, it probably doesn’t matter in the eyes of screenwriter Zhang and Yuan Fenghui.
So what if it’s a bad movie?
As long as you can make actors famous and earn money, what else can you complain about?
Faced with Yuan Fenghui's questioning, Wen Ying's mind worked quickly. She had to find a suitable reason.
"Teacher Yuan, do you still remember when Meteor Garden was canceled?"
In February 2002, the Taiwanese idol drama "Meteor Garden" was broadcast on major TV stations in mainland China, setting off a viewing frenzy. However, it was stopped after only 6 episodes were aired. Wen Ying's generation had to watch the entire series through pirated discs.
Why?
Because the drama had a huge negative impact on the youth group, the materialism that permeated the entire drama made the Radio and Television Bureau very vigilant. Teenagers liked it, but parents collectively opposed it. No matter how high its commercial value was, it could not withstand the Radio and Television Bureau's ban on broadcasting!
In terms of genre, the script given by screenwriter Zhang is essentially no different from "Meteor Garden". Both have the configuration of a Cinderella female protagonist + N male characters, gorgeous clothes, luxury cars and mansions, and millions of pocket money. These settings are not in line with the current national conditions.
It is unlikely that the show will be suspended, but Yao Wenying said that the show still does not conform to the country's social values.
Of course, Wen Ying remembered that after this TV series was finally filmed and broadcast in Taiwan, it was introduced to mainland satellite TV stations for broadcast, but that should have been in the summer of 2008. Three years earlier or later, the social atmosphere was different!
On the other end of the phone, Yuan Fenghui remained silent. Wen Ying struck while the iron was hot:
"I'm not cursing Teacher Zhang that this drama will be banned. Even if it does air successfully, it might not be consistent with the character you want to create for Mengjiao and your long-term expectations for her. Youth idol dramas always make the male lead or the male supporting role famous. When will the female lead reap the popularity?"
Most of the people who watch youth idol dramas are little girls.
What makes these little girls scream is always the tall, rich and handsome male lead or supporting male role in the drama.
Girls will put themselves into the role of the Cinderella heroine and fall in love with the hero and the supporting male lead. They will remember the heroine, but after the TV series is over, they are obsessed with the hero and the supporting male lead.
There are several "idol drama queens" in Taiwan who can make any male actor popular when they act with him, and film producers like to ask them to act.
But once the performance is over, let’s wait and see who can stay popular for long.
In contrast, there are male stars who started out in idol dramas, using the popularity gained from idol dramas as a springboard to go on to act in movies.
No matter how their movies perform at the box office, at least they have made the leap from television to movies!
It’s not that Li Mengjiao can’t act in idol dramas, but she shouldn’t act in such brainless idol dramas. Apart from making the audience have a fixed impression of her and gaining temporary popularity, what can Li Mengjiao gain?
