Han Chen wrote a letter reflecting on his behavior the previous night, promising to exercise more restraint in the future and to consider Xuemei's health and her need to go to work. He also said he had fully realized his mistake and would fine himself a month's allowance.
After Xuemei and Han Chen got married, Xuemei decided to give Han Chen three yuan pocket money every month. Han Chen had no objection, or maybe Xuemei didn't notice it and just took it as a deal.
Then Xuemei took out a hundred yuan and put it in the small wooden box. She then put the small wooden box into a wooden box containing quilts and locked it. The key was hidden in the pillow core.
This was the money Xuemei left in plain sight for Han Chen in case her family needed money when she was not at home.
Xuemei had put more than one yuan in change in a high school textbook in the desk drawer. She also told Han Chen to take the change out if he needed it.
Xuemei had placed the rest of the money, passbooks, and other belongings in her space. She had been thinking of finding an excuse to cover it up, or saying she'd hidden them somewhere else. But Han Chen shook his head, saying that Xuemei only needed to know where the remaining cash and passbooks were. The fewer people who knew about such a large sum of money, the better.
Seeing that Han Chen really didn't want to know and didn't mind, Xuemei stopped trying to find excuses and just told him that she was hiding in a very safe place and asked Han Chen not to worry, it was all right.
Han Chen saw Xuemei finish reading the letter. He took out three yuan from his pocket and handed it to Xuemei, saying seriously, "Xuemei, I really know I was wrong. If I do anything wrong in the future, you can deduct my pocket money!"
