As soon as Xuemei and Luoyao walked into the living room, Ruirui said, "Sister, Sister Yaoyao, the porridge is ready. It's really mushy today. Should we turn off the fire in the coal stove?"
"Ruirui, there's no need to turn off the light. It's past eleven o'clock now. Your elder sister and I are coming to prepare the food. You can sit in the living room and rest for a while! Turn on the fan. Look at the sweat on your face!" Luo Yao arranged.
Ruirui nodded obediently, then took a piece of fruit candy and started eating it.
Luo Yao then said to Xuemei, "Xuemei, you see, you need to wash those vegetables. I'll go and wash them, and then you can fry them!" Luo Yao took a small basket from under the kitchen table and said.
Xuemei picked some peppers, two eggplants, and a bitter melon, and asked Luoyao to take them in a basket to the water table for washing. As soon as Luoyao left, Qingya arrived with Hanchen and Feifei.
Ruirui opened the door. Xuemei looked at the three people sweating profusely and said distressedly, "Go sit in front of the fan and get some fresh air. It's too hot outside!"
Qingya and Feifei looked at the fan and ran over to study it with curiosity. Ruirui taught them how to use it.
Han Chen pulled a handful of money from his pocket, handed it to Xuemei, and said, "They took the radio and watch I took from the purchasing station last time. I got a total of 78.5 yuan and 10 feet of cloth coupons. I spent all of those 10 feet of cloth coupons plus the 10 feet you gave me! Now I only have 62.5 yuan left."
After Han Chen finished speaking, he pulled out a twenty-foot piece of cotton cloth from the sack on the ground and said, "This was chosen by Qingya, Feifei, and I. They all thought the one with pink floral patterns was pretty, but it's a bit pricey, 50 cents a foot, probably because of the color. Usually cotton cloth is only 40 cents a foot. Oh, and I saw some wool at the department store, so I bought three pounds of red wool at two dollars a pound. They don't have any more, otherwise I would have to buy some more. Our little girl will look good in a red sweater in the future."
As Han Chen spoke, he thought of a white ball that looked like Xuemei, wearing a little red sweater and sleeping soundly in his arms, and he couldn't help but smile.
Xuemei touched the cloth Han Chen took out, feeling it was soft and sturdy. She then looked at the red wool and said to Han Chen, who was grinning like a fool: "This cloth is a good buy. Mom will praise you when she gets home. As for the wool! Your daughter will have to be at least a year old before she can wear wool!"
"It happened to be winter then. The next time I write to my uncle and his family, I will send some money over and ask my aunt and her family to buy me some nice fabrics and wool from Beijing. I will make mother-daughter outfits for you and your daughter. What do you think?" Han Chen asked with a smile.
Xuemei didn't want to reject Han Chen's kindness outright, so she changed her words and said, "Don't be so anxious for now. Newborns grow fast, so we don't need to make too many clothes. When she's older, we'll make some clothes for her. Then you can come along, and we can all wear the same clothes."
Han Chen held Xuemei's hands and looked at her tenderly. Luo Yao, holding the still dripping basket, pushed open the door and saw the two of them feeding their love. Luo Yao couldn't help but chuckle and said, "You two have been married for so long, and you're still so inseparable?"
"Don't worry, we will be like this for the rest of our lives!" Han Chen hugged Xuemei's shoulders and boasted.
Luo Yao had been bickering with Han Chen every time they met since Xuemei got married. Seeing Han Chen's smug look, Luo Yao rolled her eyes and said, "That's the best way to do it. You've got to always treat my Xuemei well!"
Han Chen looked at the basket in Luo Yao's hand, frowned, and said, "Your basket is leaking, and the floor is wet. Where do you have a mop at home? I'll go get it and mop it!"
After Han Chen finished speaking to Luo Yao, he gently said to Xuemei, "Xuemei, go sit on the sofa for a while. There's water here. Don't move around!"
When Luo Yao heard Han Chen say this and saw the water droplets on the floor, she said embarrassedly, "Xuemei, be careful, don't come over here. It's all my fault that I forgot to bring the basin!"
"It's okay, I forgot too! Han Chen, their mop is hanging in the corridor outside, go get it!" Xuemei ordered.
After mopping the floor, Han Chen followed Xuemei into the kitchen. Luo Yao even took out three eggs and asked Xuemei to cook them.
Twenty minutes later, the eggplant with mashed peppers, scrambled eggs with bitter melon, and egg soup were ready. The braised pork was also put back into the pot and served in a bowl. A small portion was left in the lunch box for Luo Yao to eat in the evening. The lunch box was covered and placed in cold water to chill.
When Han Chen and Xuemei brought the dishes to the coffee table, the porridge that had been prepared in advance had already cooled down.
Luo Yao thanked him, "Xuemei, thank you for your hard work. You two should sit down and eat. Finish the braised pork and don't leave any for me!"
As soon as Luo Yao finished serving, everyone started eating. Han Chen saw Xuemei had eaten a lot of chili peppers, so he quickly stopped her and said, "Xuemei, don't eat chili peppers anymore, eat something else!" After Han Chen finished speaking, he picked up some bitter melon and scrambled eggs for Xuemei, and then gave Xuemei the braised pork in his bowl.
Xuemei took some more meat back and said with some guilt, "I was enjoying it so much just now that I forgot to eat it!"
"It's okay, I'll watch over you. Just don't eat now!" Han Chen comforted.
"Then you have to pay more attention to me in the future!" Xuemei put down her chopsticks and looked at Han Chen.
"I will. As long as I'm by your side, you can eat without worry! Don't worry about these things! I will stop you if you can't eat it." Han Chen reached out and touched Xuemei's head.
Luo Yao, watching the two show their affection, clicked her tongue again, then said to Qing Ya beside her, "Are your elder sister and brother-in-law also so clingy when they're having dinner at home?"
Qingya was currently devouring the meat, not even looking at Xuemei and Hanchen. She lowered her head and replied, "Sister Yaoyao, eat meat! Why did you lock them up here? They do this every day, I'm used to it!"
Seeing Qingya say that, Luo Yao ignored Xuemei and the others and lowered her head to eat. Eating was the most important thing. What's the point of showing off her affection? She also has a partner, and she will do the same in front of Han Chen and Xuemei in the future. Luo Yao took a big bite of the steamed bun in her hand and thought.
After dinner, Feifei and Qingya washed the chopsticks, and then everyone sat in the living room drinking soda and chatting.
At half past one, Xuemei and the others said goodbye and went home. Luo Yao went to the room and took out the food she and Dr. Gu had prepared last night. She divided it into two portions, one for Xuemei and Han Chen, and one for Qingya and her two siblings, to take home and eat with Liu's father and mother.
They are half a pound of beef jerky, two ounces of dried red dates, and two ounces of raisins. These are very precious and difficult to buy here. They were brought back by Brother Luo Yao when he visited his relatives.
