Time flew by, and it was October 1977. Xuemei gave birth to her twin sons, Han Xu and Han Yao, in early March of the lunar calendar in 1974. Their nicknames were Ranran and Kangkang, and they were now three years old.
The two brothers weren't as outgoing as their sisters, being much more composed. They looked like Han Chen, more so than An An, who was looking more and more like Xuemei. The only thing about their faces that resembled Xuemei was the dimples they both had: Ranran's on the left cheek, and Dangdang's on the right.
The two brothers are now out playing with An'an and Lele. An'an and Lele are six years old now. They are two naughty kids. They can be said to be the two little bullies among the children in the village. They run around with a group of younger brothers every day.
Liu's father went to work in the village, and Liu's mother took over Xuemei's job at the supply and marketing cooperative. Han Chen and Xuemei were at home reviewing. They had heard the Gaokao, which had been held for ten years, would be reinstated, and both planned to take it. More than twenty other educated youth in the village, married and not, were also reviewing, believing this was their chance to return to the city.
Feng Ru had returned to Beijing with the Lin Jin brothers earlier this year, but Lele refused to leave and stayed behind. The Lin family had been rehabilitated at the end of 1976, and after returning to Beijing and settling any issues that needed to be resolved, Lin Hongwen came to Liujia Village to take Feng Ru and the others back home.
Ruirui graduated from high school, passed the county's draft, and is now serving on an island. Qingya, now a platoon leader, continues to shine in the army, but her marriage remains a source of worry for Liu's mother. Feifei, recommended by the village in 1974 to attend the Workers, Peasants, and Soldiers University, will graduate next year. He heard the college entrance exams were starting next year, so he plans to pursue graduate school after graduation.
After the autumn harvest, the whole village was immersed in a learning atmosphere. The two sisters An An and Le Le did not dare to make loud noises at home for fear of affecting Han Chen and Xue Mei's review.
After days of hard review, Han Chen and Xuemei finally went to the battlefield. The college entrance examination on December 10, 1977 was the only winter college entrance examination in Chinese history.
On this day, more than 5.7 million young people from rural areas, factories, and the army rushed to the examination halls, carrying with them rare opportunities and high spirits.
On the second day after the college entrance examination, Xuemei went to work and then waited anxiously for the results. When everyone was anxious, the results came out. Han Chen ranked first in the science subject in Nanhu Province. Xuemei was a little worse, but she was also third in the liberal arts subject in Nanhu Province.
When Liu's father and mother received the admission letters from Peking University and Tsinghua University, they immediately cried with joy. Later, they hosted a grand banquet for Han Chen and Xuemei at their own expense.
After the banquet, Han Chen and Xuemei took their family to Beijing, planning to buy a house there first. Xuemei already had 4,000 yuan in savings, and Aunt Lin had already found a good place for them to buy one there. Later, Han Chen and Xuemei bought a small two-story house in a small alley near Tsinghua University. It cost them a little over 3,000 yuan, but it was a nice house.
In addition to the living room, kitchen, and bathroom on the first floor, there are two rooms with kangs in each room. The second floor has four rooms, a bathroom, and a balcony for drying clothes.
There are small courtyards of 23 square meters in front and back of the house, and the house is equipped with floor heating and running water, making life very convenient. Except for the fact that it is too expensive, Liu's father and mother are very satisfied with the house in other aspects.
The Liu family celebrated the New Year of 1978 in Beijing. That year, Han Chen and Xuemei's lives also moved from Liujia Village to Beijing, becoming more colorful.
