Chapter 29 Zhang Zhaodi falls ill

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, Xuemei returned to her parents' home. After breakfast, her family took the New Year gifts and headed towards Wangjia Village.

"Dad, Mom, we're back."

"Hurry, hurry, Guangda, Li Niang, and children, come inside and warm yourself by the fire. It's still a bit cold outside today, and your mother should warm herself by the fire too." Grandpa said as he walked.

Xuemei and her family walked into the main room. There was a brazier in the middle of the room, and grandma was moving stools.

"Mom, you sit down. Xuemei and the others can do it themselves. This is what I brought for you and Dad." Mother Liu brought a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of canned oranges, a bottle of white wine, and half a pound of kelp to her parents.

"Why did you bring so many things again? Xuemei, find a place to warm yourself by the fire. Grandma will get you some White Rabbit candies. These are what your third uncle bought."

"Sister, brother-in-law, you are here."

"Weidong, where are you coming from?" asked Liu's mother.

"I just arrived at my second brother's house in the back. When I saw you, I immediately went home. Sister, my second brother and his wife said that you should go to his house for lunch today."

"Okay, Mom, let's go to my second brother's house for lunch today."

"Okay, Weidong, come here, share the candy with these little guys."

"Come on, come on...Xuemei, the four of you stand still. Whoever screams the loudest gets an extra one."

"Third uncle, third uncle, third uncle..." Xuemei and her two younger brothers shouted. Wang Weidong gave each of the three children two White Rabbit candies.

"Qingya, why didn't you call me? Don't you want to eat White Rabbit candy?"

"Uncle Shan, Mom said I can't eat candy anymore."

"Hahaha, it turns out that you are changing your teeth. You can eat less. It's okay to eat one candy for a few days. Wang Weidong touched Qingya's head and couldn't help laughing."

“…Well, Xuemei, come here. I heard from your grandparents that you won a prize in a competition in the county last year. Here, this is a reward from your uncle.” Wang Weidong took out a red envelope and handed it to Xuemei.

"Uncle, I want one too." Ruirui and Feifei shouted.

"You have it too, Qingya come here too."

After distributing the red envelopes, Wang Weidong carried Ruirui and Feifei on his back, one in front and one behind, and Qingya chased after them. The yard was filled with their noise.

"This Weidong, he won't even marry a wife and is acting like a child."

"Mom, he has to decide for himself. If he doesn't, there's nothing we can do." Mother Liu advised.

"If a family doesn't marry a daughter-in-law through a matchmaker, he can't do it. He won't even go on a blind date."

"Mom, Weidong can still wait another year or two. By the way, where are Xinyan and her sister?"

"They are at your second brother's house."

"Are you okay at my second brother's house?"

"We ate together at the reunion dinner last year and it was fine. It should be fine if we stay away from each other a little. My second son's wife is much better now."

"Mom, my brothers, sisters, and I went to my second uncle's house with my third uncle."

"Okay, tell your dad to go with you guys and bring the stuff."

Father Liu is talking to grandpa.

"Dad, take the New Year's gift and the child to my second brother's house first. I'll stay here with my mother and talk to her for a while. Come back after dinner."

"Mom, my second sister-in-law should be much better now. Xinyan and her sister can go back and live with us later."

"I hope she gets better soon so I can rest assured. I plan to go there after the Chinese New Year. Your eldest brother wrote to me saying that your eldest sister-in-law's pregnancy was not going well. She was at war when she was pregnant with Zhiqian, so we didn't know. No matter what, your father and I should go over and take care of this baby. Otherwise, we would be sorry to your eldest brother and his wife."

"Mom, you and Dad should go over and take a look, but where are Xinyan and her sister?"

"He lives here now. Since your third brother hasn't gotten married yet, Zhiqing usually comes to live with him when he's not at home. Actually, our two houses are only about ten meters apart, so it's okay if Zhiqing doesn't come."

"Mom, my second aunt is sick." Xuemei ran back and shouted.

When grandma heard this, she was so anxious that she fell off her chair, "Why are you sick again?"

Mother Liu helped her grandmother up and said, "Mom, don't worry, I'll go take a look. Xuemei, you and grandma will follow slowly in the back."

When Liu's mother arrived at her second brother's house, she saw her second sister-in-law crying and hugging Xinyan and Sitong tightly, not wanting them to leave. Her second brother, Wang Weimin, stepped forward to comfort her and advised her to let the two children go first. "Zhao Di, let the children go first, don't scare them."

Zhang Zhaodi cried and said, "Don't you want our daughter anymore? No, no one can separate the three of us."

Wang Weimin stepped forward and Zhang Zhaodi kicked him. Liu's father took the opportunity to go behind Zhang Zhaodi and hit her on the back of the neck, knocking her unconscious. Wang Weimin stayed by her side to catch Zhang Zhaodi.

"Xinyan, Sitong, aren't you two sisters scared?" Wang Weiguo asked worriedly.

"Dad, it's okay. This time mom just hugged me and my sister and cried, she didn't hit us."

"Don't blame your mother. She was just afraid that she wouldn't be able to see you again."

"Dad, my sister and I know everything. We don't blame Mom."

Wang Weimin carried Zhang Zhaodi into the room. Only then did Liu's mother quietly ask Liu's father, "Brother Da, why did my second sister-in-law suddenly become ill again?"

"Alas! It's all my fault for not being careful and avoiding her when talking to my second brother."

"What did you say to irritate her?"

"We said Mom and Dad were going to visit our eldest brother after the Lunar New Year, and that they had initially wanted to take Xinyan and her sister with them. Just as we were saying this, my second sister-in-law heard us and started crying out Xinyan and Sitong's names from the kitchen. She looked at the two sisters and hugged them, crying, afraid that someone would separate them. She also kept telling them that she would never be separated from them."

"You too, why don't you talk to her in a way that avoids her? Besides, why would parents take the two sisters to the eldest brother's place? She and the second brother are both at home. If they really took them there, what would the villagers think of the second brother and his wife?"
