That afternoon, Xuemei, along with Qingya, the other two, Shengnan and her sister, Mingwu, and Juhua, went up the mountain to chop firewood. As they were returning home, pushing two carts, they saw two elderly people, each pulling a child, approaching them.
"Hey, wait a minute, kids in front. I have something to ask you."
Xuemei looked at the old woman in front of her, holding a little boy of four or five, and the old man next to her, holding a little girl of two or three. She had some impression of these two elderly people, but she couldn't remember who they were.
"Children, do you know where Liu Xiu's home is? I heard she built a house in your village."

"You are lying. Liu Xiu doesn't have any parents-in-law. What are you doing here? Mingwu, take Yanan back and call people. Tell them that someone is sneaking into our village. If you don't tell us, we will call the police."
After Mingwu took Yanan back to call for help, Old Lady Li became anxious.
"You little bitch, I told you we're here to find Liu Xiu. If anyone is sneaking around, tell them not to go."
