Chapter 8: Paying the Public Grain (Part 1)

Father Liu looked at the three little ones beside him, then at Mother Liu's eyes before saying, "It's not that your mother doesn't want to take you. Dad doesn't have time tomorrow because he has to go to the commune grain station with the uncles and aunts in the village to pay the public grain. Your mother and your eldest sister have a lot of things to carry and don't have the energy to take care of you. If someone bad takes you away, you will never see your father, mother and your eldest sister again, and we won't know where to find you then."

Qingya and the other two were frightened by Liu's father's words and no longer said they wanted to go with him, but all three little ones looked unhappy.

Seeing the three little ones looking listless, Mother Liu consoled them, "Your eldest sister and I will bring you some malt sugar tomorrow."

Then he looked at Xuemei and said, "Xuemei, you and your brother and sister should go take a shower. After taking a shower, go to bed early. We have to go early tomorrow."

After the four siblings finished their bath, Xuemei secretly pulled them into her room and closed the door. She reached into the clothes box and pretended to take out three cents, but she actually took it from the space. Since she knew the space wouldn't disappear, she put the money in a small box and put it inside the space.

In Xuemei's family, Liu's parents have let their children keep their New Year's money since they turned eight. As a result, Xuemei is the third richest person in the family; many older children in the village don't have as much money as she does. Currently, Xuemei has a total of 1.35 yuan saved.

Qingya was very envious when she saw the three cents, and thought that she would have money by next New Year.

The three little guys stared at it with wide eyes. Xuemei waved the money in her hand, and the three little guys said, "Do you see the money in my hand? I'll buy a string of candied haws for each of you three tomorrow."

Xuemei and her two siblings had never eaten a whole string of candied haws. Father Liu would always bring one or two strings back from the county town for the whole family to share. When the three little ones heard this, they immediately started dancing around the room. Feifei, the clever little one, immediately said to Xuemei, "Big sister, you're the best! I'll be your best brother from now on."

Qingya and Ruirui heard it and were not willing to be outdone. One of them held Xuemei's hand and patted his chest to promise that he would be the most obedient one in the future.
