Chapter 55 "I can support you for decades to come..."
They've been married for five years, and Jin Huan still gets lectured by Zhong Yan at this time.
When else could this happen?
It had only been about half a month since they last did it, and the initial awkwardness quickly faded, replaced by a sense of familiarity. Jin Huan almost instinctively responded, and then she heard Zhong Yan whisper some lecturing words in her ear, asking her if she would continue to lie in the future.
Was his unreasonable behavior a bit excessive?
Jin Huan simply didn't know how to complain, since her anger was really not a threat. If she gave him a cold look and wanted to vent her anger, it would usually be easily coaxed by his gentle words or kisses within half an hour.
Fang Jinhuan is just that spineless.
He's only gotten older, nothing else has changed. His shrewdness and intelligence are nowhere near as good as Zhong Yan's.
Jin Huan told him that their research institute was recently holding a social event with several other institutions. The leader was trying to match her with a doctor who was about five or six years older than her. He was already the head of a department at a young age, and was said to be good-looking, have a good personality, and have a bright future. He assured her that she would definitely like him.
The conversation went on so fast that there was no time to explain.
Jin Huan looks too young. If it weren't for her educational background, people would think she's still a college student. When she said she was already married, people thought she was just making excuses to avoid going to the social event.
The ring on her hand is so eye-catching.
It's unclear whether Jin Huan's words are a provocation or something else entirely. She's truly unafraid of angering Zhong Yan, or rather, she finds it quite amusing to make him angry.
"So many." Jin Huan felt it, and she frowned slightly, murmuring softly. She leaned on Zhong Yan's shoulder and whispered her feelings to him.
There was so much of it, so much that it was overflowing from the glass jar, and the aroma was even stronger than the scent it naturally exuded.
Jin Huan didn't find the smell unpleasant.
Instead, Zhong Yan frowned slightly.
Whether it was because of what she said or because he lost control for a moment and didn't take any precautions, Zhong Yan's brows were now tightly furrowed and his eyes were obviously cold.
He hadn't even taken off his coat, and the pressure from it against her delicate skin had left marks. He looked down at it, ran his fingertip over the red mark, and remembered the time. She had just finished her period two weeks ago, which was her ovulation period.
Zhong Yan wrapped her in his clothes, carried her upstairs, and waited for the bathtub to fill with water before putting her in and turning on the shower to rinse her.
Jin Huan leaned over the edge of the bathtub, her chin resting on her arm. Her eyes were a little glazed over. Water cascaded down her shoulders. She bit her lip and whispered, "It's okay... I like everything you have."
We've talked about this before.
Jin Huan is actually quite easygoing. Just like when she decided to get married, she has a go-with-the-flow attitude towards everything. Whether or not she will get pregnant, she will accept it if it happens.
Anyway, she had prepared it a long time ago.
She felt a strong sense of security with Zhong Yan, so strong that she could do anything with him; Jin Huan had always thought so.
She is still young for Zhong Yan, but she is actually not young anymore.
Jin Huan was abandoned by her parents. For a long time afterward, she wondered if raising children was really such a difficult thing for parents, otherwise why would one or two of them not want to raise her?
Besides, she was already quite grown up back then, a teenager, and about to enter junior high school. Logically speaking, she shouldn't be difficult to raise.
Even though Jin Huan rarely talks about it, this matter has remained deeply rooted in her heart for many years, even now. Being abandoned by the person she loved most still occasionally wakes her up in the middle of the night.
Even though she has now started a new family.
Five years ago, her mother came to visit her once and also attended her later wedding. She looked at her from below, her expression full of emotion, as if she had a lot to say, but in the end, she didn't say anything.
Jin Huan sat down and chatted with her after the ceremony ended.
My mother has started to grow gray hair. She mentioned that she is going through menopause recently, and she can't sleep at night. She is also in a bad mood. Now that she is getting older, she is starting to regret why she didn't let her grow up by her side.
Jin Huan confided in her, explaining that she is now married with her own family and could better understand her decision to pursue her own happiness. She acknowledged that Jin Huan's decision was not wrong and that Jin Huan should not feel guilty about it.
She never blamed her.
The girl's features remained the same, growing proportionally from childhood to adulthood, but now she was more gentle and mature. Her mother looked at her, her eyes crinkling into a smile, remembering the first time she called out "Mom," when she was moved to tears. That feeling was so far away now.
She only found out about her marriage through her WeChat Moments, which was the last thing she knew.
Her parents did not have any more children, so many years later, Jin Huan became their only child.
The value of being "unique" is constantly increasing.
Even if she has her own children later.
"Do you find raising children troublesome?" Jin Huan thought of herself and the past, and slowly asked Zhong Yan.
Jin Huan has lived a peaceful and stable life these past few years, and her features have become more and more gentle. When she lowers her eyes, it seems as if her entire body, from her toes to her hair, is bathed in soft light, making people's hearts soften. It's as if she's asking Zhong Yan if raising a child is troublesome, but it's also as if she's asking him if raising herself is troublesome.
At least her parents thought raising her would be too much trouble.
"Have I ever found it troublesome to take care of you?" Zhong Yan replied in a low voice.
"No," Jin Huan said with a confident smile.
Jin Huan said in a serious tone, "Raising me is different from raising a real child... You know, I may not be as obedient as a child."
Just now downstairs, when we were doing it, he called her a liar. Jin Huan gritted her teeth and couldn't refute him, or rather, she couldn't utter a sound at all. Instead, he made her tremble.
Now that they've calmed down, they know how to outmaneuver him.
Jin Huan smiled, with a hint of smugness in her eyes. Manipulating Zhong Yan had become a source of amusement in her otherwise tedious research. After all, he was so calm and rarely showed any emotional fluctuations. After several years of marriage, Jin Huan was no longer as afraid of him as she used to be.
Zhong Yan looked at her face, then leaned down and kissed her.
From a light kiss to a deep one, Zhong Yan seemed possessive, biting her lips. Today he bit a little too hard, making her lips hurt, so she bit back in dissatisfaction. Jin Huan sometimes wouldn't back down, biting her back and then smiling at him.
Zhong Yan rubbed her head vigorously.
“I can support you for decades to come,” Zhong Yan said.
Jin Huan's gaze slowly drifted down. Several decades, perhaps, could be considered a kind of promise; a few more decades would be a person's entire life.
Jin Huan nuzzled her head against his neck, her heart softening at his words. She said softly, "It would be great to be cared for by you for several more decades, since you've always been this amazing."
"Dare to try going to a social event?" Zhong Yan whispered, calling her full name, "Fang Jinhuan."
Jin Huan chuckled softly, amused by the jealousy in those words.
Jin Huan was picked up by him.
During her physical examination last month, some of the tests showed negative results. At her age of twenty-something, she was already in poor health. The doctor specifically advised her to remember to rest well and not stay up late. After that, Zhong Yan even changed the time for her tests to the morning or afternoon.
Otherwise, since you already go to bed late at night, you might not be able to keep track of time.
The wind was howling outside the window, swirling through the trees, and the howling sound was rather frightening, like a child whimpering and crying.
Zhong Yan also changed into his pajamas, hugged Jin Huan tightly, and pulled her into his arms. He had been exercising regularly, and his shoulders were very broad, giving people a sense of security.
He held her tightly yet gently.
"Alright, go to sleep." Zhong Yan said that he would schedule a few more check-ups for her after New Year's Day. It was important that she take care of her health. Otherwise, he wouldn't even be able to take good care of the "child" in his arms, let alone raise a child from infancy to adulthood.
When it came to the examination, Jin Huan was a little scared. She didn't like having blood drawn, nor did she like the feeling of the ultrasound probe, especially in this season when it was cold. But she knew that this was a matter of principle and there was no room for negotiation, so she mumbled a reply and closed her eyes to try to fall asleep.
After being exhausted, she fell asleep quickly. Jin Huan leaned against his chest and felt like she had barely closed her eyes before losing consciousness.
When I woke up again, it was still dark.
It was pitch black outside, and she had no idea what time it was. Jin Huan was all alone beside her. She reached out but couldn't touch anyone, only feeling a faint warmth. She peeked out from under the covers to look.
Zhong Yan was on the outer balcony.
By the dim light from outside, Jin Huan could see his back; he was just standing there quietly.
I glanced at the time; it was only 5 a.m.
Jin Huan gently lifted the covers and got up. Her head was still throbbing from just waking up. She slipped her feet into her slippers and slowly moved toward the balcony. She didn't even notice him when she got to his side. Jin Huan reached out and hugged his waist, resting her head against his back, and softly asked, "Can't you sleep because you have something on your mind?"
Zhong Yan felt a soft warmth on his back. He looked down at the hand wrapped around her waist, gently took it, and hummed in response, "Grandfather hasn't been feeling well lately."
Zhong Yan held power in the Zhong family for as long as he had been married. After his grandfather handed over all the power to him, he stopped interfering completely. Zhong Yan was a seemingly gentle but actually very decisive person. Once the power was in his hands, he would achieve results and shut up the other branches of the Zhong family.
There's not much to say about what comes into his hands; he'll handle everything perfectly.
But my grandfather's health was deteriorating, and the doctor said it might happen within the next six months.
The old man is almost ninety years old, and there are some things he can't change. He knows he's reached this point.
"The agreement I reached with him back then was probably the only time I acted like a gambler."
Zhong Yan gently stroked the back of her hand and told her what he was thinking at the time. His parents' marriage was an arranged one, with no real feelings between them. They raised him to adulthood and then settled abroad together. They didn't divorce, but they didn't stay together either, and that's how it dragged on.
His grandfather wanted to hand over the Zhong family to him, but the condition for doing so was marriage.
Zhong Yan still vividly remembers the scene. He had a long negotiation with his grandfather, who was very firm in his stance: if he didn't get married, he shouldn't expect the matter to be done openly and legitimately.
As for his marriage partner, he doesn't interfere.
Regardless of background or personality, as long as it's his own choice and he's willing to do it, that's fine.
My grandfather knew his health was failing at that time.
Jin Huan said, "Then let's stay at the ancestral home for a while longer this Lunar New Year's Eve."
There was nothing else I could do but keep them company.
She came out wearing only her pajamas, and Zhong Yan wrapped her in his coat. The person leaning against him was very quiet, as if the passing wind had slowly faded away. When he was feeling down, a hug from his wife could comfort him, which made him feel much more at peace.
"My initial goal was simply to find someone with whom I could exchange things on an equal footing, so that we could each get what we needed."
Jin Huan nodded: "I know, you've told me all about it."
“Yes,” Zhong Yan replied, looking into her eyes. “But I didn’t expect to run into such a shameless scoundrel.”
Jin Huan frowned: "No, that's not it. I just... really, really liked you back then."
It takes several adjectives to confirm the extent to which this is the only outrageous thing she has ever done in her life.
"Was it not clean enough?" Zhong Yan suddenly asked her. Even after rinsing her, he could still smell her scent, a faint but strong one. He even reached out to check.
Jin Huan dodged for a moment, then mumbled an explanation: "It went in really deep, it will come out slowly."
She was clearly acting like a scoundrel again. Zhong Yan sighed, swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue, and ultimately didn't say anything to her. After all, there was nothing he could do about her.
Some things are destined to develop to a certain point, and we should leave it to fate. We shouldn't interfere or force things; that's just how it is.
He lowered his head and touched her forehead: "Then go back to sleep for a while, it's not even dawn yet."
"I want to sleep with you." Jin Huan also stood on tiptoe, rubbed her nose against his, and said softly, "If you want to stand for a while longer, I'll stay with you."
They've been married for five years, but she still prefers to use honorifics when addressing him; it always makes him feel more affection for her.
Zhong Yan chuckled softly: "Why are you still so clingy?"
"Of course, they're the kind of people you'll be supporting for decades to come. Who else would they stick to if not you?"
Zhong Yan responded softly, "Xiao Bao is right."
