Chapter 31 Gift Giving
There is a person in the Yu family who cannot be mentioned, Yu Huan’s sister, who has been dead for fourteen years.
This person is a taboo for Yu's father and mother. No one can mention him. Anyone who mentions him will trigger their years of resentment.
But they always bring it up because this person is a switch that can shut off all of Yu Huan's complaints, unwillingness, and rebellion.
As long as this name is mentioned, she will be obedient and let them do whatever they want.
The same is true this time.
The next day, Yu Huan went to work with the arduous task of bribing her immediate boss. All day long, she was thinking about how to bribe Meng Han without him being disgusted.
This problem gave her a headache. She was a small employee, but she actually wanted to bribe her immediate superior, whose coat was worth several months' salary.
It's simply overestimating one's own abilities.
But if she didn't do this, there would be no peace at home, and she was in a dilemma for a while.
Finally, she could only seek help from He Xiaowei, Meng Han's long-time friend and secretary.
"Brother Xiaowei, I want to ask you something."
He Xiaowei put down his work and came over. "You didn't call me Secretary He. It seems you want to ask about something personal?"
"Hmm... not really private, half public and half private?"
"Tell me about it."
Yu Huan's family affairs were no secret to He Xiaowei. She told him that her parents wanted to get a 40% discount on home purchase and forced her to bribe the boss.
"So I want to ask you, you've known Mr. Meng for so many years, have you ever given him anything?"
"Of course I have." He Xiaowei answered readily.
Yu Huan's eyes lit up. "What did you give me? Did Mr. Meng say anything?"
He Xiaowei thought about it and counted them carefully, "I've received local specialties from my hometown, dried meat made by my mother, and fruit wine brewed by myself..."
Yu Huan interrupted him halfway through, "Are these gifts given by you as a friend or as a secretary?"
He Xiaowei glanced at her and said, "Of course, as a friend. You're not really planning to give a gift to Mr. Meng, are you?"
Yu Huan sighed. She didn't want to do that either. She had some understanding of Meng Han's character. Even if she gave him the gift, it would be for nothing. He wouldn't give her the spot just because of her gift.
This is not in line with his principles.
But if I don’t send it, I won’t be able to get past my family’s hurdles.
"Forget it, I'll just go back and say I gave it to Mr. Meng and he didn't take it. Let them scold me if they want."
Anyway, she has gotten used to it over the years. Compared to being scolded by them, keeping her job is the most important thing.
However, although Yu Huan said this, he still looked worried.
He Xiaowei looked at her with a gloomy face, leaned over and whispered, "About this matter, it's not completely hopeless."
Yu Huan suddenly raised his head and looked at him, "What opportunity?"
"Although our company only has three quotas, our President Meng is surnamed Meng, so giving you an extra internal quota is just a matter of convenience. However, this gift depends on how you present it."
Yu Huan humbly asked, "How do I send it?"
"Next week is Mr. Meng's birthday. You can pick him a gift as a birthday present, but don't mention the internal discount. Wait until after his birthday, then bring it up in front of him, intentionally or unintentionally. If he's willing to give you this benefit, then it's a done deal. If he pretends not to hear, don't ask again."
This approach is good, but...
"Isn't it a bit too ambiguous for a subordinate to give a birthday gift to his superior?" She was worried that her flattery would backfire, and Meng Han might think she had bad intentions, and she might lose her job accidentally.
He Xiaowei looked relieved. "No, I will give him a gift every year on his birthday. Just come with me."
Yu Huan was relieved now and began to think about what gift to give Meng Han.
It's too expensive, she can't afford it, and he doesn't need it either.
But it’s too cheap and I can’t afford it.
I've been with him for half a year, but I don't see him having any hobbies...
Suddenly, that rainy night, that strong hand, and those dignified, sloppy, and wild handwriting appeared in my mind again.
Even when drunk, he still did not forget to practice calligraphy. In addition, the calligraphy copybooks and four treasures of the study in the room were collected by him as treasures.
I think it would be a good idea to give him something related to calligraphy.
After setting a goal, Yu Huan began to do his homework, studying everything from brushes, to ink, to inkstones, to rice paper, and even seals.
You won’t know unless you study it, and you’ll be shocked once you do.
She used to think that among the four treasures of the study, the most expensive one should be the inkstone, but she found that if she really wanted to choose the best one, none of them were cheap.
Even a piece of paper is more valuable than gold.
After choosing and choosing, she finally bought a set on the day before Meng Han's birthday, spending two months' salary.
When she got it, she didn't dare touch it, for fear of breaking it.
On Meng Han's birthday, Yu Huan had been trying to find the most natural time to give the gift to him, but the gift box was still in her hand until she was almost off work.
He Xiaowei saw it and signaled her, "If you don't go now, I'll be off work."
"When did you deliver it?"
"I came in the morning and put it directly on his desk."
Yu Huan also wanted to put it directly on his desk, and when he asked what it was, he naturally said it was a gift for him.
But Meng Han didn't come out of the office all day.
Seeing that it was almost time to get off work, she gritted her teeth, took a deep breath, and knocked on the office door while holding the gift box.
"Enter."
Pushing the door open, she held the gift box behind her and walked into the office.
Meng Han was looking down at his phone at this time, not paying attention to who came in. He only looked up after hearing no one speak for a long time.
"What's up?"
Yu Huan was so nervous that she could hardly breathe. She could feel her face turning red and now it was very hot.
Don't be nervous, you're already here.
Muttering these words silently, she walked to his desk, took out the gift box from behind her, and gently placed it on the table.
She didn't dare to look him in the eye. She lowered her eyes and said softly, "Mr. Meng, happy birthday to you."
Meng Han's eyes fell on the gift box. He couldn't tell what it was at first, but judging from the texture of the packaging, it should be expensive.
"Thank you, but no need for the gift."
Yu Huan panicked, thinking she was too nervous and was misunderstood by Meng Han. She immediately looked up and explained, "Mr. Meng, I don't mean anything else. I just want to thank you for your tolerance and care during this period. I really do!"
She looked visibly nervous, her speech was rapid, and her usually fair face was flushed red.
This made Meng Han a little surprised.
"That's not what I meant."
"Then why don't you accept it? You've already accepted Secretary He's." She pursed her lips, frowned slightly, and unconsciously felt a little aggrieved.
Meng Han felt as if she was hallucinating again, and saw two drooping ears on her head.
There was also a restless, listless tail wagging behind it.
