Chapter 12 The Sleepless
It turned out that he was too tired and fell asleep directly on the stone table in the basement.
Angel remained in that waking position for nearly a minute before coming to her senses. The dream was so real that even after waking she felt a chill down her spine and a cold sweat all over her body.
Now that I think about it, wasn’t that middle-aged police officer with gray eyes in the dream the police officer in the police carriage that I met on Iron Cross Lower Street at midnight the day before yesterday?
What you think about during the day you will dream about at night. It seems that I really hope that the authorities will intervene in this matter. That's why I dreamed that the Beyonder police broke into my house and even told me everything that was in my heart.
Even if this is not a modern society, the "night watchmen" representing official power would not pry open other people's doors early in the morning, sit on the sofa and say "please sit down" as if they were the masters, right?
Looking at the row of special bullets on the stone table, Angel carefully put them into a box and took them out of the basement, just like he had done in his dream before.
Fortunately, the bullets made are real. If this happened in a dream, wouldn’t I have to make them all over again?
Angel thought with some fear as she put the bullet box into the desk drawer and looked at the whitening sky outside the window. She prepared to wash her face first to wake up, and then go to St. Selina Church to ask the bishop yesterday whether he had informed the Beyonder Organization of the information.
If the Church of the Evernight Goddess was slow to respond, she planned to go to the "River and Sea Church" of the Church of the Lord of Storms to try to report it.
Pushing open the door to the living room, Angel was stunned again.
The "Officer Dunn Smith" I had seen in my dream was wearing the same black and white checkered uniform and police hat as before, sitting cross-legged on the sofa by the bay window, holding the same notebook in his hand. Seeing Angel leave the study, he gently tossed the notebook onto the square table, adjusted his police hat, and stood up from the sofa.
"Let me introduce myself again, Dunn Smith, Night Watchman." He bowed slightly, like a gentleman introducing himself at a ball.
"Hello... Hello, I'm Angel Granger, but I think you already know." After a brief shock, Angel quickly reacted. The "Dunn Smith" in his dream just now was obviously the same person in front of him. He might have "invaded" his dream.
This reminded her of an extraordinary creature called "Nightmare" in her previous life.
The person before him had normal features and all four limbs intact, unlike the "nightmare" that looked like an abstract painting. Another explanation was that the potion Dunn Smith had taken had given him the ability to invade and manipulate dreams. Thinking of this, Angel asked:
"Is this your extraordinary ability? Every Nighthawk has it?"
"Not all of them. Everyone has different sequence paths. I'm from the 'Sleepless' sequence." The brown-haired and gray-eyed police officer answered with a smile, completely different from the gloomy and serious look in the dream.
"Sleepless" sounded like a path related to night and sleep. Dunn Smith didn't specify the sequence of the Sleepless Path, and Angel didn't ask, but silently noted that this sequence possessed the ability to control dreams.
"In dreams, people often release their repressed emotions, amplifying their darker tendencies and making everything in their dreams absurd and chaotic. But even the most chaotic dreams reflect our true selves. For extraordinary people like me, the real you in dreams is more trustworthy than the real you in reality."
No wonder I answered everything I was asked, as if I were chatting with an old friend. Was it because I had lost control of myself in my dream? Angel suddenly realized.
Dunn Smith continued to explain his abilities.
"It may sound scary, but I simply guided your dream and got the answers I needed. Although you probably can't remember the specifics, I can assure you that we had a pleasant conversation in the dream, and it didn't touch upon your personal privacy."
He winked at Angel in mock humor.
But I remember it very clearly, even the words you used to mock me for overestimating my own abilities and trying to challenge Madam Sharon... Angel was a little confused. Should he forget the dream just now?
The most important thing is that his answers in the dream were completely evasive and he deliberately blurred the concepts of "Cole Granger" and "Angel Gray". Although he hardly lied, he used the art of language to conceal his identity under the rest of the truth.
This is far from the "reality in dreams" mentioned by Dunn Smith. According to him, after being dreamt of by him, one should become a high-quality questioning subject who can answer any question.
Because I'm also a Beyonder, I have a certain resistance to dream manipulation? Angel secretly guessed, but quickly rejected this answer. As a senior Beyonder, Dunn Smith couldn't have failed to think of this.
Is it because of my personal uniqueness, like I'm a soul that doesn't belong to this world? Or maybe...
Several guesses flashed through Angel's mind, but he couldn't confirm any of them, so he had to put this question aside for the time being.
But she knows that the advantages of this "specialness" are obvious.
"I... I seem to remember some things. You asked me a lot of questions..." She pretended to recall, raised her hand to her forehead, and spoke incoherently with a look of pain on her face, "Mrs. Sharon... By the way, have you seen the letter of complaint?"
"Indeed, we received a letter forwarded from the police last night, as did your confession to the bishop at St. Selina's Church. By reviewing the police documents and your testimony in your dream, we can confirm that the eleven murders and seven deaths or disappearances resulting from three mass incidents in Tingen over the past year are all linked to Cole Granger, and the mastermind behind this is Sharon Hoy, Mrs. Sharon," Dunn Smith said, pointing to the documents spread out on the table. "When my companions arrive, you will come with us back to the Nightwatchers' Tingen branch. I wouldn't say it's the safest place in Tingen, but it's certainly more suitable than here."
The result was the same as in my dream. He didn't seem to intend to let me participate in the battle with Madam Sharon... Wait, companion? Come down?
Angel was about to try again when he suddenly realized something was wrong.
"Ah, they're here." Dunn Smith looked over Angel's shoulder and behind her. Angel looked back and saw two people walking out of the shadows at the corner of the stairs leading to the second floor.
Angel suddenly found it ridiculous. When he woke up, there were three strangers in his house. Are you "Nighthawks" here for team building?
Walking in front was a young woman wearing a black robe with a hood. The hood was now removed, revealing the blue eyeshadow and blush on her face. She held a candlestick in one hand and a copper wine cup in the other.
Following closely behind was a male police officer, probably in his early 20s, wearing the same black police uniform as Smith, with all the buttons undone, revealing the vest and tight shirt underneath. He was not wearing a hat, had short black hair, and his blue eyes revealed a bohemian look.
"Daly Simone, Leonard Mitchell, they're both Nighthawks." Dunn Smith briefly introduced the newcomers to Angel. "You guys are coming down so soon?"
"Leonard and I will be jealous if we let you and this beautiful lady be alone for too long." Daly Simone, who was in the lead, walked into the living room, found a sofa to sit on, put down the candlestick in her hand, but still held the wine glass in her hand.
"Ahem..." The young male police officer Leonard Mitchell followed into the living room and stood in the corner of the room next to Angel. He coughed awkwardly but politely, and then replied:
"Captain, there's nothing unusual upstairs. It's just ordinary furniture and clothing. There's a hidden compartment in the master bedroom floor, but it's empty. Ms. Daly's psychic reading didn't reveal anything."
"To be exact, even the normal 'spirits' in this house have disappeared, as if they've followed something away. New 'spirits' don't want to get close to here either. I tried divination, but to no avail. Haha, I'm becoming more and more curious about this Cole Granger." Ms. Daly said softly.
The empty square is where Cole Granger kept his notebook, which is now on the table before us... And he mentioned "spirit"? Is it a soul, or something else? Does this mysterious woman possess the ability to communicate with spirits?
Angel thought of what Dunn Smith had just said, "Everyone has their own sequence path," and guessed that this lady might be a Beyonder from another path, possessing some Beyonder abilities that were even more "extraordinary" than the assassin's dark vision and lightness of body.
Then this person should also be a Beyonder, but she didn't know what abilities he possessed... She turned her head and glanced at the young police officer beside her. She noticed that the black-haired young man Dunn called "Leonard Mitchell" looked back at her and bowed slightly to greet her.
Three extraordinary people went out together, among them was the "Insomniac" Dunn Smith who could directly invade dreams and make people unable to distinguish between illusion and reality. If Cole Granger was still alive, only the "Insomniac" would be needed to hold him back in the dream, and the rest of the people would swagger into the house, and he would have no way to escape.
It seems that this is the fighting style of the "Nighthawks". When facing a single target, it can be said that they are invincible.
Angel was just thinking about how to break this fighting style when Dunn Smith spoke again, "Since we haven't found anything here, let's take this lady back to Blackthorn Security Company. Firstly, we need to protect her, and secondly, we need to prevent leaks before we take action."
"Action", Angel caught this key word. It seemed that before he woke up, several "Nighthawks" had reached a consensus to take action against Madam Sharon.
She originally wanted to participate and use her own memories of Cole to increase the success rate of the battle against Madam Sharon. It would be best if she could kill her on the spot. Not only would she be able to get rid of this extraordinary person who was plotting something unknown, but she could also prevent her true identity from being revealed.
But after seeing their fighting style, especially the ability of Dunn Smith, the "Insomniac", to invade dreams, Angel felt that his participation was meaningless. Although he was not sure about the fighting ability of the "psychic" Daly Simone and the young police officer Leonard Mitchell, since they could act with Dunn Smith, they must not be rookies.
There's no need to force myself to help, and these people may not trust me anyway.
Angel looked at the three people standing in a casual but vague way that surrounded him and came to a conclusion.
