Chapter 19: Death of Mrs. Sharon
Seeing that Daly did not bleed to death on the spot, but activated the spiritual communication in time to restrain Mrs. Sharon, Angel's heart, which was about to jump out of his throat, finally fell back into his chest.
Leonard, who was charging forward, also broke free from the silk thread, staggered forward and almost fell.
"It doesn't seem like it's even been twenty seconds yet?"
Angel asked Daly, and according to her mental calculation, only half of the time had passed at most.
Mrs. Sharon took a bullet on her own initiative and used the mirror to move to Daly's side. She originally thought that Daly, who was still in the psychic state, had no ability to resist, but she didn't expect that she had activated the psychic effect in advance, making Mrs. Sharon, who had fallen into the trap, look like a clown.
"Heh, I lied to her. Ten seconds is enough."
Daly's face, which was painted with eye shadow and blush and looked a little pale after two consecutive spiritual communications, also forced a smile.
"Get rid of her quickly. Although Black Fire is useless against this spirit, I'm afraid she has other tricks up her sleeve."
Angel didn't stop what she was doing during the conversation. She quickly stuffed the last five rounds of "Storm Gathering" into the magazine and walked quickly towards Mrs. Sharon who was frozen in place.
“Crash—”
The first sound that came was not Angel's gunshot, but the sound of broken mirrors. Leonard simply picked up a chair and smashed the remaining decorative mirrors in the reception room one by one.
Seeing that all the mirrors in the room had been shattered into pieces smaller than a palm, Angel raised his pistol and put the muzzle against Mrs. Sharon's forehead.
Mrs. Sharon's expression of anger and fear suddenly calmed down. Her pale red lips turned dark, and the brown color of her eyes spread to the whites of her eyes, like the surface of a calm lake.
Black flames erupted from Madam Sharon's body, enveloping her from head to toe. Then, specks of white frost appeared in the black flames, quickly spreading into ice, covering the black flames and surrounding her body like an ice coffin.
Invisible silk threads appeared in the air, wrapping the ice layer by layer, forming a cocoon-like object. The surrounding temperature dropped suddenly, and the whole room seemed to be entering winter.
All this happened in an instant. Angel thought Mrs. Sharon had attacked again, so he took two steps back and stood in front of Daly. Leonard also rushed over with a chair, and several people surrounded the "cocoon" in the middle.
But the "cocoon" did not take any further action, but stood still quietly in the same place.
Leonard frowned in confusion at first, then his expression changed drastically as if he remembered something. He quickly said, "She's trying to lift Ms. Daly's curse. We need to kill her quickly."
Angel immediately raised his gun and fired. A "Gathering Storm" bullet hit the "Cocoon". The bullet successfully tore through the silk thread wrapped around the outer layer, but was blocked by the solid ice. The bullet made a dent in the ice surface and shattered, leaving only a faint blue mark.
This is the characteristic of "Storm Gathering". As long as you continue to attack the same position, the damage of the next few bullets will become higher and higher.
"Wait, don't waste bullets yet."
Leonard reached out to stop Angel from continuing his attack and turned his head to look at Daly on the side.
"Ms. Daly, please find its weakness."
Daly nodded, her green eyes quickly turning gray, as if covered by a layer of mist, and then becoming transparent.
After staring at the "cocoon" with those special eyes for just a second, Daly pointed to a spot roughly at Angel's waist height. "At this height, shoot straight ahead. Her head is just behind it."
At this time, the silk thread outside the "cocoon" has shown signs of loosening. Perhaps in just a few seconds, Mrs. Sharon will be able to lift the curse and escape.
Crouching slightly and lowering the muzzle of the gun, Angel aimed at the position indicated by Daly and pulled the trigger again.
"Bang!"
The first "Gathering Storm" shot left a blue bullet mark on the ice.
"Bang! Bang!" The next two bullets hit the bullet mark accurately. The cumulative damage took effect, and a tiny gap appeared in the solid ice surface. Behind the gap was Mrs. Sharon's white forehead under her brown hair.
Goodbye, Sharon Hoy, go downstairs and keep Cole company... After saying goodbye to Mrs. Sharon silently in his heart, Angel pulled the trigger and fired the last "Gathering Storm".
As if detonated from the inside, the "cocoon" made of solid ice and silk threads exploded, and black flames gushed out from the cocoon, dissipating and disappearing.
Mrs. Sharon knelt at the original location of the "cocoon", her beautiful face overlapping with the scene in Angel's memory. A large-caliber bullet shot into her forehead and flew out from the back of her head, leaving a rain of blood in a fan shape. With only half of her head left, her body fell backwards with the impact and collapsed limply on the ground.
If the last bullet doesn't kill Madam Sharon, then we'll have to face a more difficult battle...
Angel breathed a sigh of relief, only to find that his right hand, which was holding the pistol, was trembling slightly. Continuously firing the powerful "Gathering Storm" was too much for even his body, which had been strengthened by potions.
Dai Li behind him sat down on the ground without caring about her image. After the continuous spiritual communication, her face was pale and her eyes were dull, and she seemed to be about to faint at any time.
Seeing this, Angel and Leonard hurriedly helped the biggest "hero" of this battle to the only intact sofa in the room.
"I'm fine, I just lost a lot of spiritual energy. I just need to rest for a while."
Although Daly said so, Angel was still a little worried about her pale face that could not be covered by blush and her lips that looked faded as if she had lost blood. She simply left the sofa, made room for Daly, laid her flat, and let her lie down and have a good rest.
Leonard seemed to have seen this kind of situation many times. He took off his windbreaker and covered Daly, who fell asleep as soon as her head touched the sofa. He walked back to the battlefield, picked up the revolver, and returned to the graceful but imaginative corpse of Mrs. Sharon.
"So lucky." After a long silence, he squeezed out a sentence.
Angel was stunned and immediately understood what he meant.
"Indeed, I'm so lucky." She also sighed.
A Sequence 6 Beyonder, in a surprise attack, not only failed to kill anyone present, but was even killed in return with the cooperation of several people. Ultimately, it was because of Madam Sharon's own lack of preparation.
If Madam Sharon had made adequate preparations, brought a gun, and decisively fired after the silk thread took effect, the people present would not have the almost rogue defensive ability of the mirror stand-in. If they were controlled by the silk thread and unable to dodge, Madam Sharon could kill anyone she wanted.
Perhaps it was overconfidence, a hasty decision, or perhaps it was a desire to maintain her public image after secretly killing Angel. Lady Sharon arrived at the Nighthawks' base armed only with a dagger, attempting to control them with invisible threads, then quietly kill her target while cloaked in invisibility and escape.
Unfortunately, although the combined strength of everyone present was not as strong as hers, the coordination between their various extraordinary abilities formed a combined force, which not only quickly broke the silk thread's restraints on everyone, but also launched a counterattack against her.
Angel's suppression of the stealth ability, Leonard's lullaby and combat support, and most importantly, Daly's "psychic" ability, which controlled Mrs. Sharon twice, gave everyone the opportunity to finally kill her.
Looking at the sleeping Daly Simone, Angel guessed that she was probably close to Sequence 6 in strength. Otherwise, even with the cooperation of others, it would be difficult to control or even curse Madam Sharon, who was at Sequence 6, by driving invisible spirits.
"It's a pity that Ms. Daly's spiritual power is exhausted and she can't communicate with the deceased Mrs. Sharon. Otherwise, maybe we can know why she attacked here."
Leonard, who was squatting beside Madam Sharon's body, frowned and said, he was checking Madam Sharon's pockets with gloves on. Apart from the dagger that no longer burned with black flames and a small palm-sized mirror smeared with a dark red unknown liquid, he didn't find anything meaningful.
"Clairvoyance? Can it be done with the dead?" Angel asked curiously.
"Of course, for a psychic, the dead are more useful than the living. Didn't you just witness the power of spirits?" Leonard picked up the dagger, left the corner of the room filled with blood, and returned to the sofa.
"As a Sequence 7 'psychic', Ms. Daly can obtain fairly complete information, as long as the time of death does not exceed one hour and the spirit body is not damaged by Beyonder power. However, in her current state, she certainly won't risk continuing to channel, as this could very well lead to a loss of control."
It turns out that "Psychic" is indeed the name of Daly's potion, and it is Sequence 7. No wonder she was able to restrain Madam Sharon, who is Sequence 6, for a short period of time... Angel thought silently, and she also memorized the keyword "out of control" in her mind.
No, it turns out that "psychics" can communicate with the dead, so killing Mrs. Sharon did not actually achieve the effect of silencing her?
Angel broke out in a cold sweat at this thought. She looked at Daly, lying on the sofa, and felt a sense of relief. The only person here who could communicate with the spirit had already exhausted their spiritual energy and would be unable to do so anytime soon. According to Leonard, the optimal window for communication was within an hour. As long as Daly didn't recover enough to communicate within that time, she would be safe.
But in this case, why didn't Dunn Smith consider bringing Daly along when planning the operation? Wouldn't this characteristic of the "psychic" be very useful in capturing desperadoes like Mrs. Sharon?
Angel raised this question, and Leonard's originally tense expression became relaxed, even with a hint of gossipy smile.
"You still don't know the relationship between the Captain and Ms. Daly, right?"
How could I possibly know...
Angel was stunned for a moment and shook his head.
Leonard carefully glanced at the sleeping Daly, confirming that she was still awake, and then continued in a low voice:
"The Captain has always had a crush on Ms. Daly. He pretends not to care, but when he lectures us, he always uses her as an example, constantly talking about 'Dally'. It seems to me that Ms. Daly actually has feelings for the Captain. She's based in Enmat Harbor, and every time she leaves, she needs to apply to the Holy Temple for permission, but she frequently comes to Tingen City. Of course, she has various reasons for doing so, like assisting with investigations or escorting sealed artifacts. Unfortunately, I can't help but notice... To get back to your question, communicating with cults like the 'Witch Cult' is actually quite risky..."
The noisy sound downstairs interrupted Leonard's gossip. He shrank his neck nervously and listened carefully, only to find that it was not Dunn and others, but several policemen questioning passers-by.
"It must be the residents nearby who heard the gunshots and reported it to the police station. There's a police officer downstairs who looks familiar to me. He's the patrol officer for this block."
Leonard looked down from the window, observed for a while, and came to a conclusion.
He put the pistol back into the holster under his arm and walked towards the door of the reception room. After thinking for a while, he returned to Mrs. Sharon's body, pulled up the tablecloth that had fallen on the ground, and covered her horrible head and her entire upper body.
"I'm going to deal with the police downstairs. They can't come up for now. Madam Sharon is a celebrity in Tingen City. It's best to wait until the captain has communicated with the higher-ups before announcing the death."
He explained to Angel.
Angel nodded. Madam Sharon was Tingen City's most famous socialite and had close ties with many political figures. If they knew that she was not only a Beyonder but also a member of the Witch Cult, they probably wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.
The noise downstairs suddenly disappeared, as if the sound just now was just an illusion of the two people upstairs. Angel and Leonard looked at each other, and Leonard turned back from the door and looked out the window again.
