Chapter 257 Clues to the Ashes
"Only £3,500?"
Angel gasped. The most valuable item in her hand was the Demonic Beyonder characteristic she had sold a few days ago. It was worth 3,200 pounds, and only half of it belonged to her.
Selling all the magical items on her could raise 3,500 pounds, but this goes against her purpose of increasing her strength. Not to mention the "Ring of Madness" needed to hide her identity, as long as she sells the "Magic Pocket Watch", her combat effectiveness will immediately drop a level, and she might not even be able to defeat the extraordinary people of the same sequence.
"That's a truly magical item, and the price is very reasonable." Seeing Angel's strange expression and his apparent lack of funds, Kavi abruptly changed the subject without even mentioning the weapon's effects. "Of course, you can provide Beyonder properties or spiritual materials. I can only charge a processing fee, usually between 100 and 200 pounds."
This makes much more sense... Could it be that the extraordinary weapon worth 3,500 pounds is just a "showpiece" to raise customer expectations and increase its value?
Hearing the quote that met his expectations, Angel breathed a sigh of relief, and then thought of the extraordinary characteristics he already possessed.
One piece came from the "Sheriff" attribute of Parker, the Beyonder who died in the Capin mansion, and the other from the contaminated attribute of the "Rose Bishop" who was met and killed in the East District. The latter had the effect of detecting living things around, and she was now using it as an ordinary magical item. The former, however, was not dared to be taken out because of the multi-party investigation of the Capin case by the thief "Black Emperor".
"I do have a characteristic from a mid-sequence Beyonder, but it's slightly contaminated, so..."
As soon as she opened her mouth, she was interrupted by Kavi, whose expression suddenly changed.
"Contaminated Beyonder characteristics? Even if you search the entire Kingdom of Loen, I'm afraid no craftsman would dare to take on such a job, no matter how much money they offer!
"Not long ago, I saw an official Beyonder who brought me a magical item formed by contaminated properties for appraisal. Not long after, she died. Can you guess how she died?"
Are you talking about me? Then I guess she faked her death...
Seeing that Kavi refused to use the contaminated Beyonder characteristics to make weapons even if it was nonsense, Angel silently swallowed the words about introducing the "Scarlet Eye".
But in this case, she can only choose the sheriff's characteristics, or take the broken whip brought back from Kapin's mansion and let Kavey try to repair it so that she can learn to use it herself?
Recalling the scene of Katie fighting with a whip in her hand, and then replacing her face with her own, she couldn't help but shudder and clear the strange image from her mind.
"I might be able to obtain an uncontaminated Beyonder characteristic in the near future. I'll trouble you to make a weapon then."
After thinking for a moment, she decided to wait until the incident with the thief "Black Emperor" was over before using the characteristics of "Sheriff" to make weapons. As for the whip, even if it was repaired, she would not use it!
"Okay, feel free to come see me at the watch shop, or ask for a deal at the Eye of Wisdom. Um, you're really not interested in that revolver?"
"Sorry, no money."
Angel forced a smile and rejected Kavi's "kindness".
Then the two continued to discuss the topic of "Which is better, a revolver or a slide pistol?" Perhaps it had been a long time since he had met someone with whom he could have a good chat, the craftsman didn't even repair the pocket watch, but made a pot of coffee, as if he wanted to chat with Angel until late at night.
Just as Angel was about to convince her to make a prototype pistol, a faint explosion sounded outside the door, dull but continuous. The two looked at each other and stopped talking. Kavi pushed open the shop door, walked around outside, and soon returned to the watch shop with curiosity on his face.
"It seems someone is setting off fireworks over at the dock," she said doubtfully, then denied the possibility. "Strange! Backlund has long banned the use of large fireworks. It would make the damn environment even worse. You know, I'm from Enmat Port. I moved to Backlund because of the excessive industrial waste gas there. I didn't expect the air here to be a hundred times worse than in a port city..."
As the craftswoman chattered, the door was opened again from the outside, and a man wearing a gray windbreaker and thick-lensed glasses walked in.
"Ms. Kavi, the captain invites you to the Mechanical Research Society, at the West Balam Dockyard by the river..."
He suddenly stopped talking and noticed the stranger in the watch shop - Angel who was looking at him.
"A customer came to customize an item. We've already finished our conversation."
Kavi offered to explain, then looked at Angel, who nodded, "I'll come to you when I'm ready."
She guessed that the man should be a member of the "Mechanical Heart" and that his hasty visit to Kavi might be related to the explosion just now. So she didn't plan to stay here any longer, lest they question him as a suspicious person or even conduct strict scrutiny.
Just as she was about to leave the watch shop, she suddenly remembered that the matter of the "mummy's ashes" had not yet been resolved. Looking at the two official Beyonders, she couldn't help but ask:
"Ms. Kavi, do you know where I can buy 'mummy ashes'? I want the real kind."
Her question immediately attracted the attention of two people, and their eyes revealed a strange expression.
This reminded Angel of the more common "uses" of this item. His face flushed a little as he explained:
"Well, I don't want to use it myself."
These superfluous words made the situation even more awkward. The man with the "Mechanical Heart" seemed to be thinking of something, with his mouth half open and eyebrows raised.
"Carlson, do you know where I can buy this?"
After a while, as if remembering that he had something urgent to do, Kavi looked at the man called Carlson and asked.
"Hmm, I'm not sure. There's a pharmacist nearby who sells very effective healing potions. He's also been secretly selling some physical enhancement drugs. I think you could give him a try." Carlson frowned, thinking for a moment, and replied after a moment, "There's a folk herbal medicine shop on Williams Street, near the Cherwood area."
He answered vaguely, as if he had to answer at Kavi's request, but didn't want to appear to remember it clearly.
Looking at the hesitant and hypocritical man, Angel chuckled secretly, but then he remembered that his image in the eyes of the two men might have been ruined, and his face turned bitter again.
She thanked Carlson, left the watch shop without disturbing the two members of the Mechanical Heart, and quickly left.
The street outside was even busier than when she arrived. From a three-story building next to the Lever Church, with a sign reading "Backlund Mechanical Research Institute," people wearing trench coats and top hats, carrying various bags and boxes, kept coming out. They boarded two carriages, ready to go.
Some believers who had walked out of the Lever Church were looking at the group, pointing and talking, but more people were looking southeast, towards the West Balam Dockyard, where cranes stood in a row. The sky there was still filled with smoke from the burned-out fireworks, which looked extremely eerie under the crimson moonlight.
It seems that this small building is like the "Blackthorn Security Company" of the Night Watchmen and the headquarters of the "Mechanical Heart". Are they preparing to go to the place where the "fireworks" were just set off to investigate?
Standing on the street, watching Carlson and Kavi enter the three-story building, and the two fully loaded carriages quickly driving away, Angel also left this place of trouble.
We're moving so slowly, we probably won't be able to catch those who caused the most trouble. Then we'll probably have to expand the scope of the investigation. If they catch me with all my weapons and magical items, I'm afraid I won't be able to explain myself...
She hailed a hired carriage and left the Lever Church in the opposite direction from where the Mechanical Hearts had departed.
