Chapter 97 The truth is approaching
"George III" danced in the air, and the convex engraved human heads and numbers quickly appeared and disappeared.
Angel's eyes followed the tumbling coin, trying to discern what magical power was influencing the divination tool during the divination process. Unfortunately, the ordinary coin simply spun and fell normally before being caught steadily by Klein.
He opened his palm with the big "1" on the coin facing up.
"The numbers say no. There are no supernatural factors involved in Lawrence's death."
Klein explained slowly, a hint of regret in his tone.
"I didn't expect the first case to be dismissed as a normal incident."
Leonard's expression did not show surprise or disappointment. Perhaps he had been mentally prepared and knew that the investigation process would not be so smooth.
"Let's go to the next location. We need to speed up."
He put the revolver and the banner back into the box, closed the lid, and prepared to call Dean in.
"Wait a minute," Angel rushed forward and pressed down the paper box. "It doesn't necessarily require the influence of extraordinary factors. At least I know a way to do this without using extraordinary abilities."
"What? How?"
Leonard looked a little surprised. He put down the box and turned his head to look at Angel.
"For example, if a Beyonder, a Beyonder with a strengthened body, uses his extraordinary physical strength to beat a victim to death with punches and kicks, would divination indicate that the deceased was affected by extraordinary factors?"
Angel looked at Klein and asked.
The latter thought for a moment and shook his head: "The incident does not involve extraordinary abilities and extraordinary items. Divination will give a negative answer."
He frowned and asked, "You mean, Lawrence did come into contact with a Beyonder, but this person didn't use his Beyonder abilities. Instead, he used threats, provocations, or instigation..."
As soon as the word came out of his mouth, he was stunned.
"Indeed, Sequence 8 of the Assassin Path, Instigator, can accomplish this simply through conversation. Most of the time, there's no need to utilize Beyonder abilities."
Angel continued where he left off.
After receiving the hint, Klein fished out the one-penny copper coin, but after a moment's thought, he put it back into his pocket. He ripped open his left sleeve and shook out the silver chain from his wrist. The topaz at the end swayed slowly, reflecting the gaslight in the room, emitting a flickering light.
"Lawrence's death is related to the Beyonder."
Angel reminded.
This will direct the target of divination to the behavior of the "extraordinary person" rather than the influence of certain "extraordinary abilities".
Klein nodded, first looking at Angel with scrutiny for a few seconds, then returning to a meditative state, holding the topaz pendant firmly in his left hand, his eyes half closed.
"Lawrence's death is related to the Beyonder."
After reciting it silently seven times, he opened his eyes.
The crystal pendant is slowly rotating clockwise.
"This means there really was an Extraordinary Person who, simply through words, instigated him to commit suicide publicly on the street."
Leonard spoke first, his expression somewhat excited, the excitement of finding a valuable clue in the fog.
"Can we find this instigator through divination?"
Angel asked curiously.
At this time, Klein had already put away the topaz pendant and wrapped the silver chain around his left wrist. When he heard her question, he shook his head in denial.
"Dream divination may be possible, but it requires sufficient information to give a definitive answer. I don't think this little bit of evidence alone is enough. It will only waste my spiritual energy."
"Then let's continue to the next location, collect more clues, and prepare more related items."
Leonard made an immediate decision.
He called Dean who was waiting outside the door, and used his identity as an inspector and a signed IOU to borrow the pistol that Lawrence used to commit suicide and the banner used to denounce the former mayor.
After putting the cardboard box on the hired carriage, the three of them got on and asked the driver to go to the next destination.
The driver, hired on a time basis, obeyed the orders and drove calmly to the next crime scene.
…
"On the afternoon of July 22nd, Wells, a paper mill porter, jumped from a six-story building in the West District. He landed on his head on the street and died instantly. Before his death, he had assaulted his foreman, who had withheld his wages and even threatened to make his life in Tingen untenable. He is currently hospitalized with serious injuries. This is the iron bar he used."
"It's confirmed. Wells's death was influenced by a Beyonder."
…
"On the afternoon of July 22nd, a deceased person was found in a fire on Sapphire Street. Personal belongings revealed the deceased person to be a resident of a neighborhood next door to the fire scene, named Magnum. Ironically, the arsonist was this same person. According to the investigation, he had a long-standing feud with his neighbor and, taking advantage of the neighbor's weekend home, attempted to set fire to the neighbor's house, potentially killing the family. However, the fuel he was carrying ignited while setting the fire, setting himself on fire."
"These are some pieces of clothing and the lighter he used to start the fire."
"Someone influenced him and brought out the resentment deep in his heart."
…
After finding the correct divination method, the three of them immediately visited several crime scenes in the West District and police stations where evidence was stored. Klein quickly identified them through divination and soon screened all nearby locations.
"Of the seven deaths so far, five have been confirmed to be related to Beyonders. All of them incited crime, and all ended up taking their own lives."
In the carriage, Angel spread the map across her legs. Four bright red dots were already marked on the west side of Tingen City. Leonard held the death report and instructed her to mark another location on the map.
"That's pretty much it for the West District. Next, we'll go to Iron Cross Street. There's a cluster of dead people there, mostly on the lower street. Unlike the previous deaths, many of them died of sudden illness."
After looking through the subsequent reports, Leonard confirmed the location and knocked on the small window at the front of the carriage, asking the driver to change direction and head to Iron Cross Lower Street.
Klein sat beside him, closed his eyes, and entered a meditative state. He had performed many divinations along the way and was exhausted. He was now using the process of hurrying on to recover his physical strength and spirituality.
"Need a break?"
Angel asked, noticing that the fortune teller on the team seemed to be on the verge of collapse.
"Well...we can go to..."
"Thank you, no need."
Leonard's hesitant words were interrupted by Klein, who opened his eyes, glanced at the setting sun outside the window, and shook his head.
"Find the murderer as soon as possible. Don't worry about me. It's enough for me to rest in the car for a while."
"...Okay, let's continue."
Leonard, the "Midnight Poet", adjusted his head and then remembered that he was not wearing a top hat today. He moved his hand to his chest awkwardly, tugged at the buttons, and muttered.
The carriage drove into the dim sunlight, crossed Iron Cross East Street, turned a corner, and headed towards its destination.
