Chapter 24 Diary
At this moment, countless thoughts flashed through Angel's mind.
I was mistaken, is this still Earth?
A country developed a writing system similar to the one in the world before she traveled through time?
still……
She suppressed her inner excitement, took the pages of the book on the table and asked, "Mr. Neil, what are these?"
After she said this, she realized that her voice was a little hoarse.
Old Neil was about to leave the small room with his keys in hand when he heard Angel's question. He turned around and looked at her. Seeing the yellowed pages in her hand, he smiled and replied, "These are rubbings of the notes of Emperor Russell Gustav. They are written symbols he created and passed down after his death. Some people think it is a complete set of occult codes that hide endless treasures. However, according to my recent research, I have deciphered the meaning of a small part of the symbols. According to my speculation, it is very likely a diary."
Diary? The diary of Emperor Russell Gustavus?
Angel searched for the unfamiliar name in his mind and soon found him in the memory of Cole Granger, because this guy was so famous that he was already a household name.
The mere fact that he overthrew the former ruler of the Kingdom of Intis, became the Regent of the Republic of Intis, and then transformed the Republic into an Empire and proclaimed himself Emperor was enough to seal his place in history. During this time, he invented the practical steam engine, ushering in the Industrial Revolution and ushering in the industrialization of the Northern Continent. Not to mention that he single-handedly facilitated the colonial era of the Southern Continent. He can be said to be a great figure who profoundly influenced modern world history.
Angel felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity with many inventions in his memory, such as "Tarot cards" and "newspapers".
Could it be that this versatile emperor of the Intis Empire is also a time traveler?
As soon as this thought came to her mind, she immediately found more evidence: various novels and dramas from different eras on the original Earth, famous sayings from different countries, and creations and improvements in different fields.
It doesn't make sense that these creations and inventions covering multiple fields come from the same person.
Combined with the text symbols that he "created" but Angel could confirm the source, she could basically conclude that Emperor Roselle was also a time traveler from Earth.
And most likely Asian.
"What? Are you trying to decipher these words?" Old Neil's question woke Angel from his thoughts.
She waved the paper in her hand with a casual expression, shook her head, and said:
"I'm just a little curious. After all, it's the diary of Emperor Roselle. I thought..."
"Think you can find some secrets?"
Old Neil smiled, shook the keychain in his hand, and said, "As one of the most famous figures of this era, his manuscripts have long been studied by countless people. Each independent symbol in the manuscripts may represent a different meaning. Unfortunately, no one has ever been able to truly decipher their meaning."
"You can continue to try it here. I'll go get the materials for you."
He didn't seem to think Angel could see anything from it, so he closed the iron door and left the room.
Angel turned his attention back to the three pages of the emperor's diary in his hand, trying to find some pattern from these square characters. Unfortunately, apart from further confirming that these characters were Chinese, there was no other progress.
At this moment, she only hated herself for not being Chinese, or at least being able to choose Chinese courses when taking foreign language electives.
These diaries may just be boring records of daily life, but they may also hide countless knowledge and mysteries, even...
Including clues to return to Earth?
Then she remembered that Emperor Roselle died in a palace conspiracy assassination in his later years. Perhaps this senior time traveler never found his way home until his death.
Gathering his thoughts, Angel began to incorporate the characters from the three diaries in his hand into his memory.
Even if you can't decipher them now, at least write them down.
————————
“Bang, bang—”
A knock on the door woke Angel from his absorbed memory.
With the help of the Beyonder's far superior memory, she had memorized all the text in the three pages of the diary. As she was checking them one by one, Dunn Smith's deep voice came from outside the iron gate where Old Neil had just left.
"Old Neil, are you in there?"
The captain also came to the basement... Didn't he meet Old Neil on the way?
Angel put down the diary, opened the iron door, and saw Captain Dunn wearing a top hat and a black windbreaker standing outside the door.
Seeing that it was her who opened the door, Dunn was stunned for a moment and asked in confusion, "Where is Old Neil?"
Then he patted his hat and answered as if he had just remembered, "Oh, he went to get the materials for you, right?"
Angel nodded. "Yes, I've got the bullets. He said I need to go to the alchemy room and get the rest of the materials from Za...hiss...Chanismen."
The first time she pronounced this difficult word, she almost bit her tongue.
"I just came from the alchemy room, so he should be in Chanis Gate." Dunn glanced at the bullets on the table and made a quick decision. "Old Neil is going to help Mr. Klein Moretti mix the potion. He may not be able to come and help you deliver the materials. I will go and get everything for you. Please wait here for a moment."
Why are you making me wait here one by one?
Angel thought, frowning.
Wait, brewing potions? Klein Moretti?
She thought of the shy young man who rode with her in a carriage to the Nighthawks headquarters. Was he also going to take the potion and become a Beyonder?
In her memory, Cole Granger had always mixed his own potions and taken them on the spot. However, neither Cole nor Angel had ever witnessed someone taking potions from a third-party perspective. Hearing that Old Neil was offering to help someone mix potions, she was intrigued.
"Can I watch from the side? I mean the process of preparing the potion."
Angel pretended to be uninterested and asked casually, but her confused words revealed her true feelings.
Dunn frowned and looked at Angel for a long time, and just when she thought she would be rejected, those gray eyes looked away.
"Come here."
After nodding in agreement, Dunn turned around and walked out of the room.
He actually agreed?
Angel quickly put down Emperor Russell's manuscript, quickly followed Dunn Smith, walked through the passage they came from, and returned to the intersection.
Just as they were about to turn onto the passage leading to Chanis Gate, they heard the clatter of footsteps. Old Neil, dressed in a black robe, approached from the other end of the passage, carrying a wooden box. Seeing the two people standing at the intersection, he paused as if startled, then relaxed once he recognized who they were.
"Dunne, why are you here?" Old Neil greeted Dunne first, then without waiting for a reply, he handed the wooden box to Angel. "These are the materials you need. They're all in the box. I took a few extra, except for the star crystal. Can you count them yourself?"
Angel took the box, opened the lid and looked inside.
The small wooden box was divided into several compartments. Two glass bottles should contain alcohol and etching solution. Glowing lizard scales were neatly stacked in the corner. Dry screaming grass was bundled and filled up one compartment. Star crystals were placed separately in glass bottles, sparkling with starlight under the light.
She nodded and said everything was fine.
After the two men had finished their handover, Dunn slowly spoke, "Old Neil, go back to Chanis Gate and get a copy of the Diviner's potion formula and ingredients. Bring them to the alchemy room."
"A fortune teller?"
Old Neil repeated the word.
"Oh, is it for that little guy Klein? I didn't expect him to choose this path. I thought he would choose 'Sleepless', although we already have enough Sleepless here."
Muttering, he turned and walked towards the Chanis Gate.
"Let's go to the alchemy room first. Klein is waiting there." After watching Old Neil leave, Dunn said to Angel.
The two left the intersection again and walked towards the Church of St. Selina. They walked along the long stone passage for a distance until they stopped in front of a secret door opened in the wall.
Is this the alchemy room? Why is it hidden behind a secret door?
Angel followed Dunn into the room and looked at the secret alchemy room under the gaslight.
Crucibles, test tubes, flasks, and messy tables and chairs. This was more like an enlarged version of Angel's own basement than the clean and tidy "regular alchemy room" he had imagined. Klein Moretti, who had just said goodbye upstairs, was standing in front of a table, looking around at the items in the alchemy room. Hearing footsteps, he turned around and looked at the door in surprise.
"Captain, why are you back?"
"Old Neil went to get the ingredients for the potion. I met Miss Angel Granger on the way, so I brought her along... well, to observe."
Dunn pointed at Angel and explained briefly.
Only then did Klein notice Angel by the door. He put his hat in his hand and greeted her, "Miss Granger, we meet again."
These etiquettes are so troublesome... People who are too polite are hard to get along with.
Angel complained in his heart and had to return the greeting.
After the two men finished greeting each other, Dunn stepped forward, cleared his throat, and said, "It's a good opportunity for you two to get to know each other. This gentleman is Klein Moretti, a native of Tingen and a graduate of Hoy University. He was involved in a mysterious incident last week and has now joined the Nighthawks."
Klein smiled at Angel as a greeting.
"This beautiful lady is Angel Granger, a native of Sivellas County. She recently came to Tingen City and, due to her involvement in a mysterious incident, chose to become one of our members."
Angel extended her right hand toward Klein. The latter was stunned for a moment, then quickly raised his right hand and shook hers.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Moretti."
"Me too, Miss Ann… Granger."
"Oh, such a small social, how could I miss it?" A low but lively voice came from behind Angel. She turned around and saw old Neil holding a small silver box in one hand and taking off the round-brimmed felt hat on his head with the other hand, pressing it to his chest and bowing slightly.
"This witty old gentleman, everyone calls him Old Neil. You can also call him the manager of the Nighthawk Warehouse, the seeker of mysterious knowledge, and the peeper of secrets in the darkness."
He raised the box in his hand with exaggerated movements.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the Diviner's potion."
The alchemy room was silent for a moment.
