Chapter 66 "The Sleepless Squad"
"Are you Angel Granger, the 'assassin' from the Tingen City team?"
The man before him was about 40, with short, reddish hair. He was over 1.80 meters tall, with broad shoulders and broad arms that stretched his shirt tight. Most striking was his square face, about one-third of which was covered in burns, stretching from his chin to most of his left cheek. New tissue, slightly lighter than normal, was congested, further distorting his already unremarkable features.
After putting his luggage into his temporary residence, Angel followed Daly back to the lobby and continued to wait for the arrival of other members.
Before leaving in the morning, she had a piece of bread as breakfast in Tingen City. By then, she had digested it more thoroughly than the "Assassin" potion. Her empty stomach twisted and twitched, expressing her dissatisfaction.
But seeing that the other night watchmen didn't seem to care about being hungry at all, she was too embarrassed to suggest that they eat first. She could only go to the kettle nearby, pour a cup of tea, and use the hot tea to fill her stomach.
Fortunately, not long after, the red-haired man returned to the "Silver Bullet Detective Agency" with another team member whom Angel had met once. He greeted Daly, came to Angel and started the conversation.
Angel's eyes swept across the red-haired man's burned face and she immediately retracted her gaze to avoid offending him. Hearing the question, she nodded slightly and answered:
"Yes, I am Angel Granger, a Sequence 9 Assassin and member of the Tingen Nighthawk Squad, reporting to you."
"Good! Finally, it's not the 'Sleepless Ones' or the 'Corpse Collectors' who are here."
The red-haired man nodded and sat on the sofa opposite Angel. His strong body made the sofa creak, which made people worry about the quality of the sofa.
"You may have heard Dunn Smith mention me. My name is Bell Clement. Like Smith, I'm also 'Nightmare'. You can call me Captain Clement, or just Clement."
As expected, they're also from the "Sleepless" sequence. Why am I not surprised at all... The concentration of Sleepless in the entire Night Watch team is a bit too high...
Some disrespectful thoughts towards the Goddess of Night flashed through Angel's mind, and he casually replied, "Okay, Captain Clement."
Clement nodded, his eyes scanning the other people in the room.
The two night watchmen from Pritz Harbor were still sitting on the sofa, but they had stopped talking. The man with tanned skin was brewing coffee, and a strong aroma filled the room.
The other man Clement brought back to the base was actually the talkative man she had met on the steam train to Port Enmat. At this moment, he was in a corner of the hall, pushing open a window, lighting up the cigarette that he had not been able to smoke on the train before, and enjoying the charming taste.
Together with Angel's team from Tingen City, the "Silver Bullet Detective Agency" has now gathered night watchmen from all the major cities in the southeast of the Kingdom of Loen.
Of course, except for Backlund's team.
"Backlund's Nighthawks were delayed before their departure. They can't make it today, and I'm afraid it will be difficult tomorrow."
Clement said loudly, drawing the attention of everyone in the room.
"Some of you have already seen me, some have only heard of me, and I am no different. So starting with me, everyone please introduce yourselves, including your name, team, and potion sequence."
He reintroduced himself according to the format he had mentioned, and then turned his gaze to Angel across from him.
"Angel Granger, Tingen City Squad, Sequence 9...Assassin."
Feeling the gazes of the other Nighthawks following him, Angel stood up and spoke briefly.
As soon as the name of the potion sequence came out, she felt that the eyes of several people were filled with surprise and astonishment.
At first she didn't understand the meaning of the glances, but as everyone started introducing themselves, she soon understood.
The brown-skinned, black-haired man who was sitting on the sofa with a cup of coffee put down the cup, stood up, and said in a loud voice:
"Moreau, from the Nightwatch Squad of Pritz Harbor, the 'Sleepless Ones'."
He pointed to the man next to him who was hanging his coat on the back of the sofa, and the latter nodded as a greeting.
"This is Brandon Poirot, also from Pritz Harbor, Sequence 8 'Midnight Poet'."
The man who arrived at the scene last, but was also the first person Angel met, stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, walked over from the window, sat in another empty chair, and spoke slowly in a tone like reciting poetry:
"Rupert Norman, 'Midnight Poet' from the Stoun City Squad. The lady has seen me on the train."
He smiled friendly at Angel, who wanted to pretend not to see it, but was afraid of ruining his relationship with his temporary teammate, so he nodded and returned the greeting.
"Daly Simone, the 'psychic' of Enmat Port, Sequence 7."
Finally, there was Ms. Daly's languid voice.
After she finished her self-introduction, as she expected, everyone in the hall except her and Daly were Beyonders of the "Sleepless" path.
Backlund's team hadn't arrived yet, but Angel, having met Lorota and Borgia, guessed that there might be some, or even all, Beyonders of the "Sleepless" sequence among them.
It was no wonder that Dunn did not send other senior Beyonders, but instead asked her, a rookie, to represent the Tingen City team to come to support.
Otherwise, this team will be large in number but may fall into the embarrassing situation of "single ability".
After the self-introduction session, the Nighthawks became idle again. Clement did not reveal the specific reason for gathering them. It might be because he was worried about the plan being leaked in advance, or maybe he was just an executor.
But before Backlund's team arrived, everyone was free to move around. They were only required not to leave the city of Enmat Port, and to report to him in advance if they were to leave the base for more than four hours.
Before Angel came to Enmat Harbor, she planned to find an excuse to slip away, but she didn't expect the management here to be so rough, which was exactly what she wanted.
She found Daly, who had been sitting next to her without saying a word, and asked about the extraordinary material trading market in Enmat Port.
"Extraordinary materials? Are you planning to make the spell yourself?"
Daly asked curiously, raising her blue eyeshadowed eyebrows.
"It's not a spell. I'm planning to make some more of the special bullets I used last time. I'm also going to see what the difference is between the trading market here and Tingen City. Maybe I can buy some useful extraordinary items."
"Extraordinary items are not that easy to buy. Basically, they are spotted and bought before they are put on the market."
"You can go to Pitts Street in the harbor area. There is a bar called 'Carrion Bird'. Tell the bartender that you want to go to the underground market and he will tell you how to do it."
"Just say it directly? No code or secret passage or anything?"
Angel asked curiously. This was a little different from the "underground market" she knew.
Dai Li raised the corners of her mouth, narrowed her eyes, and answered with a hint of disgust:
"We don't have as many rules as Tingen City, and the official Beyonders in Enmat Port are chronically understaffed, so they basically let things run wild when it comes to behaviors that don't really involve Beyonders. For example, secret gatherings like the 'Divination Seeking Society' and the 'Tarot Club', where they exchange folk occult knowledge, exist. If they were in Tingen City, they'd likely be forcibly disbanded by the Nighthawks or other official Beyonders. But in Enmat Port, there's no one to manage them unless they really cause trouble."
Ta...Tarot Club?
Angel felt his heartbeat slow down.
She pretended to be calm and listened patiently. When Daly finished speaking and picked up the water cup to drink, she pretended to ask casually:
"Tarot Club? It sounds like a gathering of Tarot card enthusiasts. What do they do?"
"I'm not entirely sure. Clement investigated last week, using methods you know. After confirming they weren't engaging in any evil rituals or involved in serious crimes, he stopped pursuing them. I heard they were using tarot card names to refer to each other, like 'The Fool' and 'The Hanged Man'."
The name of the rally matched, the code name matched, and "on the surface, there didn't seem to be any problems"...
Angel was almost certain that what Daly was talking about was the "Tarot Club" that she had participated in many times.
Could it be that the "Hanged Man" lives in Enmat Harbor and was accidentally targeted by the Nighthawks?
Remembering that his speeches in the Tarot Club always revolved around places like Pritz Harbor and Storm Sea, and that the location of the "craftsman" he provided was also in Enmat Harbor, Angel concluded that the "Hanged Man" mentioned by Daly was the one he knew.
Fortunately, the Tarot Club only meets once a week, and through Mr. Fool's mysterious methods, outsiders should not be able to see any problems.
But as a member of the Tarot Club, she cannot sit idly by while Extraordinary people are watching her, and she has an obligation to prevent being discovered by official Extraordinary people, or even being wiped out.
"That sounds interesting. I've also been interested in tarot readings lately. Where can I find them?"
She suppressed her anxiety, picked up the teacup and asked casually.
Daly glanced at Angel in surprise.
"I didn't expect you to be interested in this kind of organization. Doesn't Old Neil in your team know a lot about divination? And I heard that Klein, who escaped death, drank the potion and became a 'diviner'. He should be able to teach you, right?"
"But if you really want to find them, go to the Carrion Bird market. There's a member of the Tarot Club who often buys amulets, ritual materials, and the like there. She's a young girl who calls herself Justice, which is also a card in the Tarot. I think everyone in the market knows her. Just ask anyone."
Now, except for Mr. Fool, all members of the Tarot Club appeared in Enmat Harbor...
Angel wiped the nonexistent sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand.
