Chapter 107 Tracking and Traps
"The temperature in here is at least ten degrees lower than in the wild."
Klein tightened his windbreaker and commented while shivering.
Of course, part of the reason is also because of the blood loss I just had. I heard that after losing blood, the body will feel cold. Plus, the temperature here is lower than outside, making me feel like it's winter...
Klein added silently in his heart.
He couldn't show himself too weak, otherwise the captain would probably ask him to go back and rest, and let Old Neil handle the curse ritual.
Dunn seemed not to hear Klein's complaints. He walked slowly in front of the team, his eyes half-closed, entering a meditative state. His gaze swept across the corridor. The translucent shadows floating in the corridor, their shapes and faces blurred, calmed down under his gaze, and then faded and disappeared.
"This can only appease them temporarily. We must quickly arrange the ritual to completely resolve the 'abnormality' in this house."
Leonard followed behind Klein and whispered.
He held up the oil lamp he had taken from the carriage, and the faint light illuminated the way forward for Klein.
The two "Sleepless Ones" in the team could find their way and identify objects with just the faint moonlight. This lamp was simply prepared for the "Fortune Teller" Klein.
The three of them walked through the corridor next to the living room and approached the cold and shadowy center of the house, the dining room.
Dunn didn't hesitate at all as he pushed the door open and walked in. Klein glanced at the other end of the corridor before following him in.
Over there was the living room where Angel was guarding alone. In order to allow Klein to explore the way by light and use candles to arrange the ceremony, the three of them left her there.
Furthermore, Klein guessed that leaving Angel alone in the living room might have another meaning—if she wanted to escape, this would be her best opportunity.
"Magic Pocket Watch"...
From Angel's explanation just now, Klein finally knew the name and effect of this magical item.
So this is the reason why she developed photophobia symptoms last week and wandered downstairs of the company building and refused to go in?
Recalling Angel, whom he had met on Zouteland Street last Tuesday, and how she had been just as terrified after seeing the lights, Klein clenched his fists and looked at the altar in the center of the restaurant.
It was a round dining table filled with puppets, with an empty space in the middle. Although the bone-chilling cold had mostly dissipated, it could still be felt coming from the center of the round table.
Three extinguished candles were placed on the edge of the round table, forming an equilateral triangle.
Countless shadows were floating in the air above the restaurant. When they saw someone entering, they silently adjusted their direction and floated towards the three people.
Dunn, who was walking in front, fixed his eyes. The approaching shadows were suspended in the air, as if they had lost their target, or had fallen into a deep sleep and no longer chased the living.
"A terrible curse ritual, but luckily we've destroyed it... Hurry up and appease them."
Leonard frowned and looked around the restaurant filled with shadows, and urged.
Klein nodded, walked past the shadows, and came to the round table. He reached out and swept the puppets to the ground. His sharp eyes noticed that these crudely crafted puppets were all labeled with names and corresponding information such as birthdays, spiritual numbers, etc.
"Joyce Meyer?"
A familiar name caught his eye. Klein ignored the ceremony and picked up the puppet with Joyce's name on it.
"who is he?"
Dunn's low voice sounded in his ears, and it seemed to have some power to induce sleep.
"One of the survivors of the Clover tragedy. Klein had divined for him."
Before Klein could answer, Leonard began to explain. He took the puppet and studied it carefully.
Klein took out the candles he had brought with him and replaced the three that had clearly been sacrificed to the evil god. He then took out essential oils, sandalwood, and other materials and set up the altar.
After quickly using a ritual knife to create a spiritual wall around the three of them, he lit candles and prayed to the Goddess of Night, completely pacifying the shadows living near the house.
They should be the victims of this curse ritual, those whose remaining lives were "stolen".
Unfortunately, the subsequent spiritual communication did not find any useful clues. These souls had been completely destroyed by the curse ritual, leaving only some broken fragments.
Even the altar itself did not reveal enough information.
"After the ritual was destroyed, the shadows could hardly rely on psychic communication to obtain information. The altar also had anti-divination measures. Those two must be skilled workers."
After hearing Klein's words, Dunn looked around with lingering hope. The shadows that had been appeased had faded away, and only the handmade puppets remained in the empty restaurant.
"The names and information on the puppets are related to the 'Alfalfa Tragedy'. I saw several familiar names. Judging by their number, it's likely that all the survivors in Tingen are listed on them."
Leonard took the "Joyce" puppet and rummaged through the pile of puppets on the ground to find a few more he recognized.
"I suspect they're planning to use the lives of dying people as sacrifices, using the cursed altar to kill the survivors of the Clover. There are a large number of them, scattered across Tingen City, and their whereabouts don't overlap. They're even under the surveillance and protection of official Beyonders. If we act directly, we'll probably be discovered before we can kill more than a few."
He spoke with confidence, as if he was very familiar with these rituals.
Dunn nodded, agreeing with Leonard's analysis. "They chose patients with dark hearts and were easily deceived. They used illness and accidents to kill dozens of people in a scattered manner. It would be easy for the police to consider them 'normal deaths,' and they wouldn't discover the supernatural factors behind them in a short period of time. By the time the police discovered something amiss in the statistics, reported it to us, and tracked us down, they would have already completed the ritual and disappeared."
"But what about Tris? He was responsible for the tragedy on the Clover, but the ceremony was presided over by two other women..."
Klein thought of the round-faced young man on the wanted poster, but he couldn't connect him with the two Beyonders he met today.
"Perhaps he has another mission, such as continuing to search for the dying and then having his accomplices cause their premature death... Let's go upstairs and check. There might be clues left in their residence. We can use spiritualism or divination to try to track down Tris."
Leonard put down the puppet in his hand and looked at the ceiling.
After a while, the three of them arrived at the second floor of the house.
Compared to the tightly closed windows and tightly drawn curtains on the first floor, the second floor looks a little more normal.
Both bedrooms were decorated as if they were inhabited by living people. In one of the bedrooms, bedding was casually draped on a corner of the bed, various women's clothing was placed messily, and a large suitcase was opened in the corner of the room, as if the owner of the bedroom had thrown it here without having time to clean it up.
Various opened cosmetics were placed on the dressing table, and the makeup mirror on it was broken. Pieces of debris less than the size of a palm were scattered on the table and the ground, showing signs of being hit by hard objects, obviously vandalized.
The three of them shook their heads. The other party's first target was the mirror, obviously to counter the subsequent divination. The gain from consuming spiritual energy for spiritual communication would not be great.
The furnishings in the other bedroom next door are much more exquisite than this one. The quilt is folded like a square and the dresses are neatly hung in the closet.
It seems that these two bedrooms are occupied by two Beyonders. I just don't know which one the "Pleasure Witch" lives in and which one the "Witch" lives in...
Secretly speculating, Klein discovered that the full-length mirror embedded in the wardrobe door was intact.
Could it be that the Beyonder in this room left in a hurry, unable to destroy the mirror? Perhaps she was interrupting the ceremony and couldn't pay attention to this...
He was secretly delighted that he had finally come across a useful clue along the way.
In mysticism, a mirror is a doorway to the unknown, to the spirit world. As long as it is intact, it can definitely tell fortunes and reveal something through psychic means!
He rubbed his cold and stiff hands and took a step forward.
But then, a throbbing spiritual intuition stopped him: the mirror in front of him was dangerous!
"Wait, don't use it for divination, this mirror is a trap!"
Leonard's panicked voice was heard from behind.
