Chapter 10 Normality

"who?"

Klein was thinking about the original owner's mysterious suicide and the unknown dangers he might encounter. When he heard the sudden knock on the door, he subconsciously opened the drawer, took out the revolver, and asked with caution.

There was silence outside the door for two seconds, and then a slightly shrill voice shouted in Ahowa accent:

"I, Mountbatten, Beach Mountbatten."

The voice paused, then added:

"police."

When the name Beech Mountbatten entered his ears, Klein immediately thought of its owner.

He was one of the policemen in charge of the block where the apartment was located. He was a rude, brutal and violent man. However, perhaps only such a man could intimidate those drunkards, thieves, part-time thieves, thugs and gangsters.

His unique voice is one of his trademarks.

“Okay, I’ll be right there!” Klein responded loudly.

He was about to throw the revolver back into the drawer, but thinking that the police outside had come for unknown reasons and might search the place, he carefully ran to the stove, the remaining flames of which had long since gone out, and put the revolver in it.

Next he took up the small basket of coal, shook a few pieces into the furnace, covered the gun with it, and finally placed the kettle on top to cover everything.

After finishing all this, he tidied his clothes, walked quickly to the door, and said vaguely as he opened it:

"Sorry, I was taking a nap."

Four policemen wearing black uniforms with white checkers and soft hats with badges stood outside the door. Beach Mountbatten, who had a brown beard, coughed and said to Klein:

"These three officers have something to ask you."

Police officer? Klein reflexively looked at the shoulder badges of the other three people and found that two of them had three silver six-pointed stars and one had two. They all looked more senior than Beach Mountbatten, who only had three V-shaped labels.

As a history student, Klein didn't know much about the ranks of police shoulder insignia. He only knew that Beach Mountbatten often boasted that he was a senior police chief.

So, those three are inspectors? Influenced by the words of his elder brother Benson and Welch, Klein still had some common sense. He stepped aside and pointed inside the house.

"Come in. What's the matter?"

The leader of the three police officers was a middle-aged man with sharp eyes that seemed to be able to see through people's hearts and make people feel scared. He had obvious wrinkles at the corners of his eyes and light brown hair exposed on the edge of his hat. He looked around the room and asked in a deep voice:

"You know Welch McGowan, don't you?"

"What's wrong with him?" Klein's heart trembled, and he asked back.

"I'm asking you." The dignified middle-aged police officer looked grim.

The police officer next to him who also wore a three-star shoulder badge looked at Klein and smiled gently:

"Don't be nervous, we are just asking as a routine question."

The police officer was about thirty years old, with a straight nose and gray eyes that gave people an indescribable sense of depth, like an unvisited lake in an ancient forest.

Klein took a deep breath and organized his words:

"If you are referring to the graduate of Khoi University, Welch McGowan from Constantine, then I am sure I know him. We were classmates and had the same instructor, Senior Associate Professor Quentin Cohen."

In the Kingdom of Loen, "professor" is not only a title, but also a position, just like the combination of professor and department head on Earth. In other words, a university can only have one professor in a department. If an associate professor wants to become a "full professor", he can only wait for his immediate superior to retire, or squeeze the superior out with his own strength.

In view of the need to retain talent, after years of exploration, the Kingdom's Higher Education Commission added senior associate professors to the three-level system of lecturers, associate professors and professors, giving this title to gentlemen and ladies who have high academic levels or sufficient qualifications but cannot become professors.

At this point, Klein looked into the middle-aged police officer's eyes, thought for a second, and said:

"To be honest, our relationship is pretty good. During this period, he, Naya and I often met to interpret and discuss the 'Fourth Epoch' document and a notebook he obtained. Officer, what happened to him?"

The middle-aged police officer did not answer, but turned his head to glance at his gray-eyed companion.

The officer with the badge hat and ordinary grey eyes answered politely:

"I'm sorry that Mr. Welch passed away."

“How could this happen?” Although he had a premonition, Klein couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise.

Did Welch also die like the original owner of this body?

This is a bit scary!

"What about Naya?" Klein asked hurriedly.

"Ms. Naya has also passed away." The gray-eyed police officer said calmly, "They both died in Mr. Welch's residence."

"Murdered?" Klein had a vague guess.

Maybe suicide

The gray-eyed police officer shook his head.

"No, judging from the traces at the scene, they committed suicide. Mr. Welch banged his head against the wall many times, leaving the wall covered in blood. Ms. Naya drowned herself in a basin of water, the kind used for washing faces."

"This is impossible." Klein's hair stood on end as he heard this. He seemed to be able to imagine the strange scene.

The girl knelt on a chair and buried her face in a washbasin filled with water. Her brown hair swayed in the wind, but she was motionless. Welch fell to the ground, staring at the ceiling. His forehead was completely shattered and covered in blood. There were marks of impact on the wall, one after another, and blood was dripping.

The gray-eyed police officer twitched his lips and said:

"We think so, too. However, the autopsy results and the scene ruled out factors such as drugs and external force. They, I mean Mr. Welch and Ms. Naya, showed no signs of resistance."

Without waiting for Klein to speak again, he walked into the room and asked casually:

"When was the last time you saw Mr. Welch or Ms. Naya?"

As he spoke, he signaled with his eyes to his companion with two silver stars.

He was a young police officer, who looked about the same age as Klein, with black hair and green eyes. He was good-looking and had the romantic temperament of a poet.

Hearing the question, Klein's thoughts raced as he pondered over his answer:

"It should be the 2nd of the month. We interpreted the contents of a new note together. After that, I returned home to prepare for the interview on the 30th. Um, the interview with the History Department of Tingen University."

Tingen City is known as the university city. It has two universities, Tingen and Hoy, as well as a technical school, a barrister's college, and a business school, second only to the capital Backlund.

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw from the corner of his eye that the young police officer walked to the desk and picked up the "notebook" that looked more like a diary.

Oops! I forgot to hide it! Klein shouted briefly: "You!"

The young officer smiled back at him, but did not stop flipping through his notes, while the gray-eyed officer explained: ..

“This is a necessary procedure.”

At this time, Beach Mountbatten and the majestic middle-aged police officer just watched from the side, without interrupting or assisting in the search.

"Where's your search warrant?" Klein was about to ask, but after thinking about it carefully, it seemed that the judicial system of the Kingdom of Loen had not yet evolved into something like a search warrant. At least he didn't know whether it had one. After all, the police force had only been established for fifteen or sixteen years.

When the original owner was a child, he was called the sheriff.

Klein couldn't stop it and watched the young officer quickly flip through "his notes", and the gray-eyed officer didn't ask any more questions.

"What's that weird?" The young police officer turned to the end and suddenly asked, "Also, what does this sentence mean? 'Everyone will die, including me'"

Isn't it common sense that everyone will die except for the gods? Klein was about to make an excuse, but suddenly he remembered that he had originally planned to "connect" with the police to prevent possible dangers, but he had no reason or excuse.

In less than a second, he made a decision, covered his forehead with his hands, and answered painfully:

"I don't know. I really don't know. After I woke up this morning, I felt something was wrong with me. It seemed that I had forgotten some things, especially those that happened in the past few days. I don't even know why I wrote this sentence."

Sometimes, being honest is the best way to solve a problem. Of course, being honest requires skills. What can be said and what cannot be said is one thing, and what to say first and what to say later and how to say them is another.

As a "keyboard" expert, Klein has also studied some rhetoric.

"Ridiculous! Do you think we are fools?" Beach Mountbatten interrupted angrily. He couldn't help it.

This lie is so crude that it is an insult to the intelligence of myself and others!

It's better to pretend to be mentally ill than to pretend to have amnesia!

“Really.” Klein responded to the gazes of Mountbatten and the middle-aged police officer frankly.

This couldn't be more true.

"Maybe it's possible." At this time, the gray-eyed police officer spoke slowly.

What? You believed it so quickly? Klein was surprised.

The gray-eyed police officer smiled at him and said:

"A specialist will be here in a couple of days. Believe me, she should be able to help you recall your lost memories."

Expert? Help with recall? Psychology? Klein frowned.

Hiss, what if this brings out my memory of Earth? He suddenly felt a toothache.

The young officer put down his notes and searched the desk and the room. Fortunately, he focused on the books and did not pick up the kettle to take a look.

“Okay, Mr. Klein, thank you for your cooperation. You’d better not leave Tingen in the next few days. If necessary, please notify Officer Mountbatten, otherwise you will become a fugitive.” The gray-eyed officer finally reminded.

Is this the end? Is this the end today? No more questions, further investigation? Or will they arrest me and torture me? Klein was at a loss.

However, he also wanted to resolve the strange incident brought about by Welch, so he nodded and said:

"no problem."

The police officers left the room one by one. The young man at the end suddenly patted Klein on the shoulder:

"That's great, I'm lucky."

"What?" Klein looked confused.

The green-eyed police officer with a poetic temperament smiled and said:

"Generally speaking, when encountering such an incident, it is normal for all the parties involved to die."

"We are so happy and lucky to see you alive."

After saying this, he walked out of the room, closing the door politely.

Is it normal for everyone to die? I'm glad I'm alive? I'm lucky I'm alive?

On this June afternoon, Klein felt a chill all over his body.
