Chapter 13: Horrified Hugh

Cherwood District, Minsk Street 15.

After eating and drinking his fill, Klein sat in the easy chair in the living room, with a charcoal-burning fireplace next to him.

In an environment as warm as early summer, he wore a white shirt, a black vest and thin trousers. He unfolded the newspaper with both hands and turned to the page with the most small advertisements.

"A new type of transportation tool that urgently needs investment. Details to be negotiated..." Klein repeated this sentence to himself twice. He reached out and picked up a pencil from the dark red small round table next to him and circled the message.

If there is no commission coming tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, he plans to go and see whether the so-called new means of transportation has any investment value.

——This kind of thing cannot be predicted in advance because there is not enough information.

“I hope it’s a product similar to bicycles…” Klein muttered to himself silently when he suddenly heard layers of illusory prayers echoing in his ears.

Who? Miss Justice? Mr. Hanged Man? Student Sun? Or the employee at Backlund Bank who wrote down my password? Klein thought for a moment, put down the newspaper, went back to the bedroom, and locked the door.

He walked four steps backwards and entered the gray fog. He saw circles of clear light spreading out from the edge of the ancient, mottled bronze table and to the side of the Fool's chair.

Klein, who was already experienced, sat down calmly, spreading his spirituality, and touched the ripples of light in response to a prayer.

The scene in front of him suddenly changed, showing a blurry set of sofas, on which curled up a petite woman in the attire of an apprentice knight.

He didn’t write down the password… He was looking at a piece of paper… Klein suddenly realized what was going on:

"She should be one of the two Beyonders that Miss Justice mentioned that I need to examine..."

After a dozen seconds of silence, Klein did not really respond. He planned to do this step in the middle of the night and then examine her character and ability based on her reaction, attitude, and handling methods.

Of course, he would never force anyone to join the Tarot Club.

…………

"A fool who does not belong to this era..." After reading the ancient Hermes language, Xio was stunned for a few seconds, his back bounced, and he sat up straight.

This seemed to be the name of a hidden being! She realized this with horror.

Her common sense of mysticism and the various rumors she had heard told her:

Once the full name of a hidden being is recited, it often means attracting the other party's attention!

The consequences of this kind of gaze will most likely not be wonderful, and may even be tragic!

Many of those hidden beings are incarnations of evil gods and demons!

And I was reciting it in the unprotected ancient Hermetic language... I was so stupid, why should I try to discern it carefully and recite it silently... Hugh looked around in panic, fearing that a monster that could not be described in words would suddenly appear in the quiet house.

The sofa, coffee table, cabinet, dining table, chairs, oil paintings and other items came into her sight one by one, without any change.

After being alert for dozens of seconds, Xio relaxed a little and comforted himself:

"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid. I just said your honorable name and didn't follow up with any prayer spells."

"This is an incomplete ceremony and shouldn't attract attention."

"And there's a good chance that the name was translated by the owner of the paper based on Emperor Roselle's special symbols, so it may not be correct."

"But, but I heard that if the evil god or demon shows interest, he will respond even if the ritual is incomplete... I'm so stupid, really..." Thinking about it, Xio's face turned sad again, feeling that he had made a serious mistake.

After waiting for a few more minutes and seeing no clear response, Xio puffed out his cheeks and exhaled slowly.

She put the paper back into the book "History of the Loen Kingdom Nobility" and walked into the bathroom with a heavy heart. She turned on the faucet and planned to sober up with cold water.

Crash!

The almost transparent water flowed down. Xiu bent down his back, stretched out his palms, and scooped up a little.

She was about to apply cold water to her face when she suddenly saw a head of long, slightly curly brown hair in the wash mirror out of the corner of her eye.

She herself has shoulder-length, messy blond hair.

Suddenly, all the hairs on Xiu's body stood up.

She exerted force on her feet, pushed herself up with both hands, suddenly jumped back, half turned her body, and struck hard with her elbow.

Bang!

She leaned against a warm body, causing the other person to let out a familiar scream and fall to the ground.

Xio stopped what he was doing and looked at his friend who was holding his stomach, writhing in pain, tears in his eyes.

The corners of her mouth twitched unconsciously and she said:

"Fors, when did you come back?"

Fors did not answer immediately. After a while, she slowly stood up with the support of the wall and complained:

"I just came back. Xiu, are you crazy? You didn't even look carefully before you attacked me! You used such a heavy hand!"

"Where did you come from?" Xio asked awkwardly.

"I came in through the bathroom window. What? Is that a problem? As an 'apprentice', it's normal for me not to carry a key." Fors answered confidently.

Xio straightened his back and pushed all the responsibility back:

"Then why didn't you go out the door? You really scared me just now!"

Fors blinked and said:

"That would require me to go half a circle, which is too troublesome. I'm used to walking in a straight line."

She paused and asked doubtfully, "But, Quinn, isn't your reaction too intense?"

Hugh struggled for three seconds between humiliation and death, and answered honestly:

"Because, because I made a mistake, a fatal mistake."

"What's wrong?" Fors asked in confusion and concern, rubbing her stomach.

Xio hurriedly recounted the story of how he discovered a piece of old paper between the book covers and accidentally identified and silently recited an ancient Hermetic spell that seemed to be the name of a hidden being.

“You, where’s your brain? It should be fine. The ceremony is not complete, and who knows if it’s true or not…” Fors looked around and inexplicably felt a chill.

She followed Xio back to the living room and saw the yellowed paper, the special Roselle symbols and the ancient Hermes text on it.

After a quick glance, Fors, a professional mystic researcher, nodded slightly and said:

"It's not the evil gods, demons, or secret entities that I know of. It's not a big problem."

"And nothing has happened so far, which means nothing should be wrong."

Seeing that Xio had relaxed, she thought of the pain in her stomach and added "maliciously":

"Of course, if something really happens, we won't be able to save ourselves with our abilities."

Xio's face turned pale, and he blurted out:

"Fors, let's sleep together tonight. Forget it, I'd better sleep alone..."

Fors raised his eyebrows and laughed, "Well, don't worry. You see, I hear strange mumblings every full moon, but there are no signs of madness or loss of control."

"Well... let's study the other three books. If they have the same paper and spells, it means that this is most likely a prank by Viscount Glint."

The two of them hurriedly took out books such as "Heraldry" and checked them carefully, but found nothing additional.

Xio looked at Fors, and Fors looked at Xio, and the atmosphere became solemn again.

"Or, how about we sneak into the mass hall of St. Samuel's Church and sleep there tonight?" Hugh suggested suddenly.

This is the headquarters of the Backlund Parish of the Church of the Goddess of Night.

“Why not Saint Hillran Church? I don’t think the Goddess of Night will protect me…” Fors replied subconsciously.

That was the headquarters of the Backlund Parish of the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery, located in the St. George District, adjacent to many large factories in the southeast.

The two ladies of different beliefs fell silent again. After a while, Fors sighed and said:

"And that would make us the target of the Nighthawks or the Mechanical Heart. This might be the purpose of that secret existence."

"Okay, go to sleep. We'll know the answer tomorrow morning. If nothing happens by then, it means there's really no problem."

…………

At midnight, the not-so-full red moon was obscured by dark clouds, and the bright stars were rarely seen in Backlund's sky.

Klein woke up instinctively, threw off the quilt and got out of bed, and entered the gray fog.

Sitting in the high-backed chair that belonged to the Fool, he prepared to respond to Miss Justice's companion and put the matter into the "examination process".

At this moment, he suddenly had a new idea:

Maybe we can try to pull people above the gray fog in this situation!

The lady should be asleep. Even if my attempt is successful, she will probably think it is just a clear dream afterwards... Well... If it is successful, I will interrupt it in time and prevent her from seeing the surrounding scene clearly...

After pondering it over for a while, Klein stretched out his hand and pointed at the circle of light that was constantly rippling, in order to establish a connection.

Suddenly, he felt his spirituality surging out crazily, causing the entire mysterious space above the gray fog to tremble slightly.

Just when Klein thought his spirituality would be completely drained, everything calmed down, and a blurry and distorted figure emerged from the edge of the long bronze table.

Xio opened his eyes sleepily and saw the endless gray fog, an old high-backed chair, and a dark shadow looking down at him.

Klein was delighted and immediately cut off the connection according to the predetermined plan.

The hazy, petite figure disappeared, but a group of illusory deep red stars appeared in the gray mist.

Klein looked at this scene and confirmed one thing: as long as someone recited his name, he could pull that person into the gray fog, and the crimson stars were a sign of a stable connection.

“But there are certain limitations. With my current strength, I can only establish one more connection at most... Well... Based on my experience just now, my current spiritual level can at most pull in a Beyonder who is one sequence higher than me. And it may not be possible. This is just a preliminary judgment. Those who are at the same sequence as me or lower should have no problem..." Klein thought with satisfaction.

He didn't need to respond again, the attempt just now was enough.

…………

Suddenly, Xio sat up from his sleep.

She had been worried about the hidden dangers of reciting the Honorable Name, and not long after she fell asleep, she dreamed of a mysterious space and a gray misty figure looking down at her.

The dream was so clear, so clear that it scared Xio.

She glanced at Fors who was sleeping beside her, and thought tremblingly:

"Is it a nightmare caused by fear, or is it because of the gaze of a hidden existence, or is it haunted by an evil spirit?"

"Well... there happens to be a gathering of the Beyonder community tomorrow night. In addition to buying the formula, I also need to find someone who is good at exorcism to purify it."
