Hearing Klein's question, Dunn looked out the window at the corridor leading to "Chaness Gate", took out his pipe, stuffed it with tobacco and mint leaves, then put it to his nose, took a deep sniff, and said with a slightly vague voice:
"Only at home can I enjoy the wonderful smell of tobacco and mint leaves without restraint. Klein, you know the creation myth, right?"
"Of course, when I was receiving enlightenment at the church's Sunday school, I learned words from the Book of Night Revelation. The chapters 'Book of Wisdom' and 'Letters of the Saints' both mentioned the creation myth." Klein slowed down his speech as he recalled the original owner's fragmented memories, "The Creator woke up from chaos, broke the darkness, created the first ray of light, and completely integrated into the universe, becoming everything. His body became the earth and the stars, one of His eyes became the sun, and the other turned into a red moon. Part of His blood flowed into the sea and rivers, nourishing and nurturing life."
At this point, Klein paused unconsciously, partly because his memory of the following was fuzzy, and partly because this creation myth was somewhat similar to the Pangu creation story of the foodie nation...
People from different worlds have something in common in their imagination of myths and legends!
Seeing that Klein encountered a "difficulty", Dunn smiled and added for him:
"His lungs evolved into elves; his heart evolved into giants; his liver evolved into tree people; his head evolved into dragons; his kidneys evolved into feathered serpents; his hair evolved into phoenixes; his ears evolved into magic wolves; his mouth and teeth evolved into alien species; his remaining body fluids evolved into sea monsters, the essence of which is the Naga; his stomach, his small and large intestines, and the evil parts of his body evolved into demons, evil spirits, and various unknown evil beings; his spirit became the Eternal Sun, the Lord of Storms, and the God of Knowledge and Wisdom."
"Humanity was born from His wisdom. This is the First Age, the Age of Chaos." Klein said the last sentence, feeling both amused and absurd.
As a keyboard folklorist, it was the first time for him to come across such a detailed creation myth, which was so detailed that it listed in detail which part of the Creator each race was derived from.
It's like sitting in a row and eating fruit.
And it's not just the scriptures of the Goddess of Night that say this, the Church of the Lord of Storms and the God of Steam and Machinery also have similar descriptions, not elevating itself alone and belittling other gods.
This either means that the creation myth is true, or it vaguely reveals that several major churches finally reached a consensus after a long struggle and compromise in prehistoric times before the Fifth Age.
Thinking of this, Klein suddenly had another question and frowned slightly.
"I think this is a bit problematic. Why are the Eternal Sun, the Lord of Storms, and the God of Knowledge and Wisdom born directly from the spirit of the Creator, but the Goddess is not?"
In the prehistoric records of the Apocalypse of Night, the Goddess of Night did not awaken until the end of the Second Age. Together with the Lord of Storms, the Eternal Sun and other gods, she protected and helped mankind survive the Great Cataclysm, which is commonly known as the Third Age, the "Age of Catastrophes."
The Mother Goddess of the Earth and the God of War also appeared in the same period, and the "God of Steam and Machinery", originally named the "God of Craftsmen", was not born until the Fourth Period.
In this way, the status of the gods seems self-evident.
It is very clear who is older and who is more orthodox!
This also caused some trouble among the followers of the Goddess of Night.
Dunn Smith held his pipe with his other hand and asked instead:
"Tell me the goddess's name in full."
Klein suddenly felt like he had stabbed himself in the back. He racked his brains and tried his best to recall:
"She is the goddess of night who is higher than the starry sky and longer than eternity. She is also the Lord of Crimson, the Mother of Secrets, the Queen of Disaster and Fear, the Lord of Sleep and Silence."
Fortunately, Klein’s mother was a devout believer of the Goddess of Night. When she was alive, she would come here every evening and at mealtime. Even though the original owner’s memory had become fragments, it would not be completely lost.
"What does the Crimson Lord symbolize?" Dunn asked in a guiding tone.
“Red Moon.” As soon as Klein finished speaking, he seemed to understand.
"Then which part of the Creator did the red moon derive from?" Dunn asked with a smile.
“A single eye!” Klein and the other party smiled at each other.
This is no less impressive than the Storm Lord formed by the Creator's spirit being divided into three!
As for the churches of the Mother Earth and the God of War, there should be similar statements. Only the God of Steam and Machinery was "born" too late, and there is no reason to do so. Their churches had always been weak for more than a thousand years before, until the invention of the steam engine, when they took the lead and truly stood on equal footing with the others.
Dunn stroked his pipe and said:
"Humans were born from the wisdom of the Creator, so they have smart and extraordinary brains, but lack other magical abilities. However, from the creation myth, we can draw a simple and clear conclusion, that is, all things are born from the same source."
“Born from the same source,” Klein repeated the last few words.
"According to this conclusion, humans who fought against giants, demons, and alien species under the protection of gods gradually found a way to obtain extraordinary powers. That is to use evil spirits, dragons, monsters, magical trees, flowers, or corresponding parts of crystals, and other materials to make magic potions. Then, they can take them and absorb them to master different abilities. This is common knowledge among all mystical schools."
Dunn didn't give too much description, only briefly introducing, "In this process, our ancestors learned through painful lessons that if you take high-grade, extraordinary potions directly, it is easy to end in tragedy. There are only three possible outcomes."
"Which three?" Klein asked curiously.
"First, the spirit dies, the body collapses, and every piece of flesh and blood turns into a terrible monster. Second, the power contained in the potion instantly changes the personality, becoming cold, sensitive, irritable, cruel, and indifferent to everything. Third, "Dunne put down his pipe, picked up the porcelain cup next to him, took a sip and said, "The Filmer coffee from the Pas Valley is very bitter but also very fragrant, with a great aftertaste. Would you like a cup?"
"I prefer Feynaport's highland coffee. Of course, I've only had it a few times at Welch's." Klein politely declined. "What's the third one?"
"Insane, mad on the spot, more evil than the devil, this is out of control." Dunn emphasized the word "out of control".
Without waiting for Klein to speak, he put down his coffee cup and continued:
"After a long period of experimentation and exploration, and with the birth of the 'blasphemous slate', humans have finally perfected the magic potion system, forming a series of steadily increasing sequences. The lower the sequence number, the higher the potion level. To date, each of the seven major churches has mastered at least one complete sequence. In addition, there are incomplete 'paths' collected over hundreds or thousands of years."
"Desecration of the slate?" Klein keenly caught the word.
It was also mentioned by The Hanged Man in The Gathering!
According to the Hanged Man, the Profaned Slate is the most critical factor in the formation and completion of the potion system!
This is quite different from what Dunn just said.
"This is something created by some evil gods. I don't know exactly when it appeared, what it records, or what's special about it. If you find any clues, you must report it to me immediately. It has the highest response level." Dunn explained vaguely, "I just mentioned one type of out-of-control. Now I'll talk about the remaining four."
“Yeah.” Klein put aside the question of the “blasphemous slate” and listened attentively.
"Although humans only have smart brains and no other extraordinary abilities, this is not absolute. There are always some lucky people, or unlucky people, who are born with higher inspiration, that is, the ability to sense spirits. They can hear sounds that others cannot hear, see things that others cannot see, and possess some extraordinary characteristics."
As Dunn spoke, he looked around at the empty space, which gave Klein a chill. "In other words, they are equal to half-sequence Beyonders, with fixed characteristics. Uh, sequence is the lowest grade in the 'chain'. In short, they can only choose the corresponding, fixed sequence path. If they take other magic potions, they will suffer from mild mental abnormalities, severe loss of control, and even more serious, direct death."
“Understood.” Klein nodded slowly.
"The third type of loss of control is similar to the second type. Once you choose the sequence chain, you can only follow this 'path' and can no longer regret it. If you take another 'path' with a suitable sequence of potions, although there is a high probability that you will gain mixed, strange, and twisted abilities, it is almost certain that you will be in a semi-crazy state, or sensitive and irritable, or cruel and bloodthirsty, or silent and melancholy."
"And there is only one chance like this. From now on, no matter whether you take the potion of the original 'path' or the potion of the current sequence, the only result is loss of control. It depends on whether you die mentally, your body collapses into a monster, or evolves into an evil spirit." Dunn said as he picked up the coffee cup and took a sip.
Klein, who was somewhat frightened, was silent for a few seconds before saying:
"What about the fourth kind of loss of control?"
"The fourth type, haha, this is one of the most common problems. When we take potions, we gain abilities that originally belonged to extraordinary species. This is an unnatural evolution, and we will be more or less affected by residual mental influences. There may be no symptoms, and outsiders cannot detect it, but there must be hidden dangers in our hearts. Before we fully master the extraordinary power brought by the potion and eliminate those subtle traces, if we rashly take corresponding potions of a higher sequence, we will accumulate madness and loss of control." Dunn was silent suddenly.
After a pause, he sighed and said, "We have internal rules for the Night Watchers. Even if a team member has made great contributions, he must take the previous potion for three years and pass the corresponding examination before he can be promoted. But even so, many people lose control every year because of this."
This is really scary! Klein took a breath and said:
"What about the last one?"
Dunn's mouth curled up but he didn't smile:
"The fifth is also a common reason for losing control. For Extraordinary people, their inspiration is more or less improved. The smaller the sequence number, the greater the improvement. As a result, they can hear sounds that others cannot hear, see things that others cannot see, and encounter things that others will not encounter. They are always subject to mysterious temptations and illusions. Once there is some other stimulation, or greedy desires appear, they will gradually lose control."
As he spoke, Dunn turned to look directly at him, his grey eyes reflecting Klein’s figure.
His tone became bleak:
"Archbishop Chanis, the founder of the modern Nightwatch system, once said:"
"We are the guardians, but also a group of poor people who are always fighting against danger and madness."
