Chapter 70: "2-049" Arrives

Ta-da, ta-da, ta-da.

The horses' hooves moved, the wheels rolled, and Klein, who had activated his "clairvoyance" and turned around to look, was unable to see the gentle and sweet young lady as he had hoped. All he could see in his eyes was the scene of the brown carriage moving forward.

At this time, all the passengers who were preparing to take the public carriage at this station had boarded, and the doors of the carriages were tightly closed and gradually moving away.

Inside the carriage, the twenty or thirty humans were so close to each other that their auras overlapped and obscured each other. In Klein's eyes, they were so colorful and brilliant that it was difficult to distinguish them.

He shook his head silently, raised his hand and tapped his brows, turning off his "spiritual vision".

For him, it was a simple feeling that since he had encountered it, he would help if he could. However, if he had missed it and the situation was not particularly clear, there was no need to always worry about it and delay his own business.

Bathed in the crimson moonlight, Klein strolled back home along the still-busy Daffodil Street. He saw Melissa sitting at the dining table, working on the exercises assigned by the school under the bright gas lamp.

She bit the pen gently, frowned slightly, and was thinking hard.

"Where's Benson?" Klein asked casually.

“Ah…” Melissa looked up and was confused for a few seconds before she said, “He said he went around several districts today and was so tired that he was sweating all over. He wanted to take a good bath to relax.”

“Okay.” Klein laughed and suddenly realized that Melissa was wearing a long dress he had never seen before.

It is off-white in color, with fashionable leg-of-mutton sleeves and tulle ruffles on the neckline and lapel edges. Apart from that, there is no overly complicated design. It is a light and everyday style that perfectly brings out the youthfulness of girls aged sixteen or seventeen.

"New dress?" Klein asked with a smile.

This was the consumption that was decided upon strongly by him and Benson.

Melissa said, “Hmm.”

"I just got it back from Mrs. Rochelle. I thought I would have to wash it later, so I might as well try it first."

Klein was quite puzzled when he heard this.

"Mrs. Rochelle?"

Isn't this the former neighbor?

Melissa nodded and explained seriously:

"Mrs. Rochelle is actually a tailor, but she's unlucky and has to help people mend clothes at home. Her life is, well, a bit difficult. I know her skills are good, and her prices are cheaper than those at a ladies' hat shop, and they fit me well, so I ordered a new skirt from her. It only cost 9 soli and 5 pence, and it only took a few days. The same style of skirt costs a full pound and a half at Harrods department store!"

So frugal... Sister, I know that at least half of your reason is because you sympathize with Mrs. Rochelle... Klein did not blame Melissa for her self-willed behavior. Instead, he smiled and said,

"When did you ever go to Harrods?"

It was in the Howers neighborhood, near the Divination Club, a place that at least the middle class could afford.

"..." Melissa was speechless for a moment, and then she said after a long while, "It was Selina and Elizabeth who insisted that I go with them. Actually, well, I actually prefer gears, places with steam and machinery, um."

“It’s good for girls to go shopping in a department store once in a while.” Klein smiled and comforted his sister.

After chatting for a while, he hurried up to the second floor in a hurry to get rid of the smell of the bar.

Just as he was about to go back to his bedroom to get some clothes to change, he suddenly heard some noise coming from the bathroom near the small balcony.

In just a few seconds, Benson opened the door and walked out while wiping his receding hair.

“How was it? Did anyone compliment Melissa on her new dress?” He glanced at Klein and asked with a smile.

“I seem to have forgotten. I just asked where it was done…” Klein thought for a moment and said.

Benson immediately shook his head:

"What an incompetent brother! Melissa just got the long skirt and couldn't bear to put it down. After she finally finished cooking and washing the dishes, she immediately couldn't wait to put it on and hasn't taken it off yet."

"...Didn't she want to wait until she finished taking a shower before changing? And then wash and hang them up..." Klein subconsciously refuted with the explanation Melissa gave.

"Tsk." Benson sighed, "It's been quite hot these past few days, and she's been busy in the kitchen for so long. I think she'll be more comfortable doing her homework after taking a shower."

That’s right… Klein suddenly realized it and smiled at his brother Benson.

So this is what you are like, Melissa... There's nothing wrong with girls loving beauty. There's no need to find excuses to dress up... The corners of his mouth curled up, he shook his head slightly, and walked into his bedroom.

Later, while taking a shower, Klein vaguely heard a knock on the door downstairs, and he immediately started to wonder:

Doesn't the guy who takes the coins from the gas meter only come once every two weeks?

Could it be Mrs. Shaw next door? No, this lady is said to strictly abide by the etiquette of middle-class communication and will not visit at an inappropriate time.

Confused, Klein wiped his body clean, put on an old but comfortable shirt and trousers, and ran downstairs.

He looked around and didn't see any strangers, so he asked:

"Did someone knock on the door just now?"

Benson smiled as he leisurely read the newspaper:

"It was Beachy Mountbatten, one of the police officers in charge of Iron Cross Street. He asked us if we had met a chubby-faced 10-year-old boy today. He even gave us a portrait for identification. It's a pity that Melissa and I have never seen him, otherwise we would have received the reward. What about you, Klein?"

“No.” Klein roughly understood what was going on.

The "instigator" Tris successfully escaped from the Dragon Bar area in the dock area and fled to the vicinity of Iron Cross Street and Daffodil Street, so the police came to his door for questioning.

This step also shows that the operation to capture the "instigator" is close to failure!

Klein didn't think about it any more because he hadn't started combat training yet and was only just getting started with shooting. Thinking about dealing with a natural "assassin" at this time was simply playing with his life.

He slept uneasily that night, always worried that the "instigator" would sneak into his home and hide, committing another murder.

Fortunately, Daffodil Street was peaceful all night, and the early morning sunshine dispelled all the gloom.

Klein relaxed, changed into formal clothes, put on his top hat, carried his cane, and walked all the way to Zouteland Street, where he greeted Roxanne in the reception hall.

"Good morning, Klein." Luo Shan responded cheerfully, lowering her voice and saying, "I heard that the big operation last night failed?"

"The operation to capture the 'instigator' Tris?" Klein asked curiously.

"Yeah!" Luo Shan nodded heavily, glanced at the partition and said, "It seems that the informant of the Mandated Punisher team found the 'instigator' in the dock area... Originally, their plan was to wait for the other Beyonders and a special operations team from the police department to arrive before launching an operation, trying to solve the problem as soon as possible without disturbing ordinary people. Unfortunately, the 'instigator' was very perceptive and discovered the problem in time, broke through in advance, and successfully escaped."

"At a time like this, they need a Beyonder with tracking abilities, like me." Klein joked.

"There was no shortage of pursuers at the time." Suddenly, Dunn Smith's voice rang out.

Luo Shan turned her head suddenly and saw the captain wearing a black windbreaker, leaning against the partition door frame, staring at her with deep gray eyes.

She quickly raised her hands, covered her mouth, and then shook her head repeatedly to indicate that she had said nothing.

Dunn shifted his gaze to Klein, pondered for a moment, and said:

"The Mandated Punisher, the Mechanical Heart, and our Nighthawks, a total of more than six Beyonders, tracked the injured Tris to the lower street of Iron Cross Street and found his temporary residence. However, the clues were cut off here. Both the extraordinary means and the normal investigation were useless. He was like he suddenly evaporated and disappeared completely."

"Do you need my help with divination?" Klein asked tentatively.

Dunn shook his head slightly:

"The Mechanical Heart has a 'Secret Peer', a senior Beyonder who is not much worse than Old Neil. I even suspect that he is already at Sequence 8, but I don't know what the corresponding potion is called."

"The Spiritual Knowledge Society has been able to survive until now, so they must have something special about them." Klein casually comforted the captain.

For the rest of the morning, he continued his occult studies, his reading of historical materials and documents, and his practice of certain techniques, just as before.

As lunch time approached, Klein gradually became absent-minded.

After a few more minutes, he simply packed up his documents and followed the call of his stomach.

At this moment, Dunn Smith came to the civil servant office and said in a low and mellow voice:

"Klein, come with me to Chanis Gate. The sealed artifact '2-049' has been escorted to arrive. The subsequent actions may require your induction of the notebook."

“…Okay.” Klein stood up and replied.

His thoughts began to become confused, wondering what the sealed object looked like and whether this operation would be dangerous.

In this slightly tense silence, he followed Dunn down the stairs and into the corridor.

After passing the intersection, Dunn suddenly stopped, tilted his head, and said seriously:

"Follow me and keep doing this movement. Don't stop. Remember, don't stop. This is related to your safety!"

As he spoke, Dunn flexed his arms, stretched them out, stretched them out, and flexed them again, repeating this cycle without interruption.

Klein stared blankly at the captain's demonstration, and suddenly an idea flashed in his mind:

"Because of the special seal?"

"Yes." Dunn nodded solemnly. "This action will allow us to find out what's wrong with you immediately, and if we rescue you in time, your life won't be in danger."

“Yes.” Klein did not hesitate any longer and began to do the “arm flexion and stretching exercise”.

"If this arm gets tired, switch to the other one," Dunn reminded again.

The "2-049" seal is really strange... What is the meaning of such an action? It looks very dangerous... Klein thought and looked at the captain carefully and said:

"OK."

He had too many questions in his mind, but since Chanis Gate was in sight, he had to force himself to endure it.

Besides, with my confidentiality level, I probably won’t be able to know the details. I can only do as I’m told… Klein exhaled and followed Captain Dunn to the guard room outside Chanis’s door.
