"Mr. Guo? I'm sorry, I actually fell asleep."
Guo Qiheng withdrew his hand and looked away from Xia Wei's face.
Her arm rested naturally on the steering wheel, and she rubbed her fingers together, the cool fingertips still seeming to retain her warmth.
"We've arrived."
"Thank you. Could you wait here for me a moment? I'll be right there once I've settled them in."
Guo Qiheng nodded, and Xia Wei then pushed open the car door and got out.
She jogged all the way to the waiting hall.
He took out his phone and dialed Xia's mother's number, which was answered quickly.
Xia Wei asked coldly, "Where are you people?"
"You've arrived?"
Xia's mother smiled with satisfaction: "At least you have some conscience. We're in waiting room number 1, come on over."
The waiting room wasn't crowded that evening; people were sitting in twos and threes. Xia Wei quickly found her mother and father.
Upon seeing Xia Wei, Xia's mother's face revealed a mocking expression: "Busy lady, it's great to finally see you. I was thinking that your father and I would just make do here tonight."
Xia's father sat on a chair in the waiting room wrapped in a blanket. His thin face had sunken pupils. He was somewhat dazed from the pain of his illness, but when he saw Xia Wei, a loving smile appeared on his sickly face.
"Weiwei, your mother..."
After being glared at by Xia's mother, Xia's father sighed helplessly.
When Xia Wei saw her father, the anger in her heart finally burst forth.
"He's a patient, why did you bring him all this way?"
With her hands on her hips, Xia's mother stared at Xia Wei with a cold expression, her eyes looking like those of a creditor coming to collect a debt.
"Why do you think we're here? I called you more than a month ago and told you we had nowhere to stay. If you had sent us money for rent back then, would your dad and I have come all this way to find you?"
Xia Wei took a deep breath. This was her biological mother, who always took it for granted to exploit and demand from her.
"Where is Xia Dong? Does he know you've come to the capital?"
Mentioning her son, Xia's mother's arrogance subsided somewhat: "I know, he also agreed that we came to find you. You know what kind of person your brother is. Although he has quit gambling now, he has no work experience since he was a child. Now he works as a security guard in a small company. His monthly salary of more than three thousand yuan is not enough for his own expenses. How can he take care of us?"
"So you're trying every possible way to pester me?" Xia Wei scoffed.
“When my dad had surgery, I sold the house I had worked so hard to buy to pay for his treatment. Now we’re still living in someone else’s house. Have you ever thought about me? I don’t expect you to treat me like Xia Dong did, but shouldn’t you at least consider my difficulties?”
Mr. Xia's eyes reddened, and he glared at Mrs. Xia with some resentment: "Stop pressuring Weiwei. She's had a hard time too. All the money she's earned over the years has gone to pay for Xia Dong's gambling debts. This time, she even sold the house she had worked so hard to buy over the years to pay for my medical treatment. Just let her go."
“Xia Weihua, shut up!! What do you mean I forced her? Other people’s daughters her age would have been married and had children back in their hometowns long ago. Isn’t it our support as parents that she was able to go to university? She’s been living a comfortable life in Beijing all these years. Shouldn’t she help out at home?”
Xia Weihua was so angry at his mother's words that he trembled all over and suddenly had a violent cough.
If it were just Xia's mother present, Xia Wei would have retorted without hesitation. But now that her only loving father was also there, she couldn't bring herself to say anything hurtful.
Xia Wei took two steps to Xia Weihua's side and helped him calm down: "Dad, don't be angry."
"slight……"
Tears streamed down Xia Weihua's face as he choked back sobs and tightly gripped Xia Wei's wrist.
Xia Wei couldn't help but tear up. Just as she was about to speak, her gaze suddenly fell on the tall figure at the entrance of the waiting room.
How did he get in?
Seeing that Xia Wei had noticed him, Guo Qiheng walked straight over with a cold expression on his face.
"It's not safe around the train station at night. I noticed you hadn't gone out for a while, so I came to check on you," Guo Qiheng explained in a deep voice.
Xia Wei's originally cold heart felt a touch of warmth because of Guo Qiheng's words.
She smiled bitterly to herself. Sometimes a stranger can make you feel warmer than your closest loved one. Perhaps she really lacked affection.
Xia's mother glanced at Guo Qiheng from head to toe. In her murky eyes, which were full of shrewd calculation, a spark was now burning.
"Weiwei, who is this gentleman?"
Although Xia's mother came from a small town, the man in front of her was impeccably handsome and had an outstanding demeanor.
Looking at his clothes, the fabric was clearly made of high-quality material. The clothes she saw when shopping in her hometown mall cost one or two thousand yuan, and they didn't look nearly as good as the ones this man was wearing.
Xia Wei ignored her mother and helped Xia Weihua up: "Dad, I'll take you to a nearby hotel for the night and then take you home tomorrow."
Xia Weihua nodded, and glanced at Guo Qiheng with curiosity.
Guo Qiheng walked to the side, picked up the two large bags of luggage on the ground, and said to Xia Wei, "The small hotels nearby often have theft cases, so let's stay in a hotel."
Upon hearing about the theft, Xia Wei decided to stay in a hotel for safety reasons.
Guo Qiheng carried the luggage and walked in front, while Xia Wei and her mother supported Xia Weihua as they walked behind.
Xia's mother kept glancing at Guo Qiheng: "Weiwei, is this man your boyfriend? He looks quite wealthy, doesn't he?"
