After Zhang Shufen got into the car, Zhang Wenbin pressed his temples and said, "Little sister, you can't be so reckless in the future. You must think twice before you act. You can't just act on impulse. You have someone with you today, but what if you don't?"
Zhang Shufen: "I don't care. They're obviously here to cause trouble. I really don't understand why our country is allowed to be harmed by these Japanese devils?"
Zhang Wenbin remained silent for a while, and only when they were almost home did he say, "Shufen, you've grown up now, it's time to think about yourself. Your brother can't protect you forever."
Just as Zhang Shufen was about to say something, the car arrived at the Zhang family's house.
"Go home, I still have work to do."
So Zhang Shufen grabbed his hand: "Brother, outsiders all call you a traitor."
Zhang Wenbin smiled and patted her head: "I know."
"But I know that my second brother is not."
Zhang Wenbin neither said yes nor no, but simply smiled and said, "Let's go home."
And so, Zhang Shufen was left at home.
In the car, the driver glanced back and asked, puzzled, "Commander, why do you want the young lady to misunderstand you? She trusts you so much; if you don't tell her, she might be heartbroken."
Zhang Wenbin glanced out the window and said, "Why add to her sadness?"
The path he chose was one with no future.
But if he doesn't leave, the Zhang family will have no one to protect them in this cannibalistic era.
A moment later, the driver slammed on the brakes. Before Zhang Wenbin could even get angry, he heard the driver's voice: "Miss Xu?"
The car door opened, and a pleasant fragrance wafted out. Zhang Wenbin looked closely and saw Xu Zhuqing get into his car: "Drive."
The driver was extremely embarrassed: "The Commander-in-Chief."
Zhang Wenbin smiled: "I'll listen to Miss Xu."
Xu Zhuqing then wore a smug smile: "That's more like it, Commander Zhang. Don't forget, you work under my father, so you have to listen to me, understand?"
Zhang Wenbin was quite helpless, but still nodded: "Yes, I heard you."
"So, when are you going to come and propose marriage?"
Zhang Wenbin closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep.
Xu Zhuqing reached out and punched him twice: "You always pretend not to hear when I bring this up. Just wait until I get Father to demote you, hmph!"
Zhang Wenbin pretended not to hear.
The driver glanced back, his heart pounding. This Marshal Xu's daughter was truly arrogant and domineering, daring to stop a car in the street. But she was of noble status, and even the warlord could not scold her. What could a mere driver like him say?
After the incident at the restaurant, Duan Jiancheng rarely saw Zhang Shufen at school anymore.
The two were not in the same major or the same year, so apart from a brief encounter during school events, they had never seen each other again.
The turning point in the story occurred two months later.
"Breaking news! Breaking news! Qingzhou has fallen!..."
In no time, news of Qingzhou's fall and occupation spread throughout the capital.
The students spontaneously took to the streets to protest, demanding that the government send troops to help them. Duan Jiancheng was among the students in the protest, but unfortunately, he and his group were imprisoned.
After being imprisoned, Duan Jiancheng and the others discovered that they were not the first batch of students to be imprisoned. Zhang Shufen, Chen Fan, and students from other departments were already in the prison. They were all dirty and many of them had injuries because of their resistance.
Upon seeing Duan Jiancheng, Chen Fan rushed over and grabbed him, saying, "Jiancheng, I haven't received a letter from your brother for two months. What about you? Do you have any news about Jianmin?"
Upon learning of the fall of Qingzhou, Duan Jiancheng immediately called home, but there was indeed no news of his brother.
Duan Jiancheng shook his head.
Chen Fan's tears fell instantly, and Zhang Shufen hugged her, saying, "It'll be alright, it will definitely be alright."
Duan Jiancheng looked at them, unsure of what to say for a moment.
In the evening, everyone was crammed into a prison cell, which was relatively warm.
Duan Jiancheng was cleaning the wound on Zhang Shufen's forehead: "Be careful, the wound must not get wet."
Zhang Shufen nodded. By the light of the oil lamp on the table, she could see his handsome face clearly and couldn't help but feel a little moved, but given the current situation, there was nothing she could say.
Soon, dawn broke.
The police came in to arrest people. Zhang Shufen was grabbed by the wrist, and before she could react, someone snatched her away and pulled her behind them.
Duan Jiancheng kicked the policeman to the ground, shouting, "Who are you? What right do you have to arrest our classmate?"
Liu Enrang, Huang Zhengwen, and others stood up, shielding the female students behind them, and confronted the police one by one.
As a result, a small disturbance broke out in the prison. The students and the police officers got into a fight, and the police batons fell on them, leaving them all bleeding from their heads.
Duan Jiancheng was beaten the worst; even his eyes were bruised, but he didn't utter a sound.
Zhang Shufen glanced at the police officers and was furious: "I won't let you get away with this!"
But in the end, the door was closed.
Duan Jiancheng's broken forehead was bleeding profusely, and the other male students weren't in much better shape. The female students were almost all crying as they bandaged them up.
Only Zhang Shufen had a cold face and a very serious expression, which amused Duan Jiancheng: "Senior Shufen, don't be so serious, smile a little."
Zhang Shufen coldly reprimanded him: "Jiancheng, don't be so impulsive in the future. You should think of yourself first."
Duan Jiancheng gasped in pain, but still said, "I dare not gamble."
Duan Jiancheng's voice wasn't loud, but all the students heard it.
