Chapter 548 Extra 4: The Republic of China Era

Liu Enrang: "Then I'll join the army! I'll kill a few more Japanese devils for you guys! And what if, just what if I become a general or something?!"

Everyone burst into laughter.

"Liu Enrang, you absolutely must become a general! We'll be counting on you to protect us from now on!"

"Absolutely! Absolutely!"

Zhou Yuwen smiled and extended his hand: "Come on, let's wish each other to shine in our ideal fields after graduation, and I also hope that our country will become prosperous and strong soon!"

A group of teenagers ate steamed buns under the cover of night, laughing freely, their eyes filled with unwavering faith in the future.

Meanwhile, on the front lines, underground.

Duan Jianmin was staring blankly at the letter and photos that had been sent a few months ago.

It was a photograph of his younger brother and his beloved Chen Fan, with a girl he didn't recognize next to them. Chen Fan had mentioned in her letters that she was her close friend.

His comrade sat down next to him, his eyes lighting up: "Wow, what beautiful girls! Who are they?"

Duan Jianmin stretched out his hands, which were chapped from the cold, smiled, and pointed to the photos one by one, saying, "This is my younger brother, Duan Jiancheng. He's grown so tall. This rascal is studying at Kyoto University. Isn't he amazing?"

"Impressive, truly impressive, a cultured person indeed. Our country is sorely lacking in cultured people."

“This is the person I love, Chen Fan, and this is her best friend, Zhang Shufen.”

"Chen Fan? That's a really nice name. Why didn't you reply?"

Duan Jianmin paused for a moment and then said, "The comrade who delivered the message has sacrificed his life."

His comrade wiped away his tears, then smiled and comforted him, "It's okay, I believe they will all be waiting for you."

Duan Jianmin chuckled and said, "Let's not wait any longer."

"I hope my family members can all live well. I hope that girl Chen Fan will stop crying all the time. I hope she can live to be ninety years old, surrounded by children and grandchildren, and stop thinking about me all the time."

How could you think like that? In this day and age, it's so nice to have someone you care about.

Duan Jianmin still smiled, but there was a hint of bitterness in his smile: "I'm just a worthless person, it's better that I wasn't in her life."

No sooner had the words been spoken than a messenger rushed in: "The enemy is attacking! Everyone on high alert!"

So Duan Jianmin tucked the only photo into his chest, picked up his gun, and hurried away.

The next day at dawn.

The battlefield was awash in blood, but the photograph he had been caressing just yesterday remained intact, though it was now stained with blood.

The squad leader crossed Duan Jianmin's name off in his notebook: "Keep this photo safe; it's a memento of one of our soldiers."

"Yes, class monitor."

Meanwhile, Kyoto experienced a heavy snowfall.

Chen Fan was awakened by the cold. She put on her clothes and got out of bed. Looking around, all she could see was a vast expanse of white, which made her feel very uneasy.

She closed her eyes, clasped her hands together, and silently prayed, "I hope my elder brother and Jianmin will both be safe and sound."
