Chapter 549 Extra Chapter 5: The Republic of China Era

"We can only hang her from the rafters so those fools can see what happens when they offend us... Ah..."

Duan Jiancheng fired a shot directly into Bai Jin's groin. Bai Jin immediately cried out in pain as blood quickly flowed down his trouser leg.

When Zhang Shufen turned her head, she was also stunned.

"I'll ask you one more time, who ordered this?"

Bai Jin was in so much pain she nearly fainted, her eyes filled with venom: "Duan Jiancheng, is it? I..."

Duan Jiancheng's brows furrowed with impatience as he fired another shot into the man's thigh: "Who ordered this?!"

Just then, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.

Bai Jin screamed in pain. Zhang Shufen and Duan Jiancheng looked over and saw that Liu Enrang's mouth was stuffed with a strip of cloth and his hands were pinned down. He was struggling.

When Zhang Shufen saw who it was, she was immediately stunned: "Second Brother?"

Zhang Wenbin strode in, his body weathered by the wind and frost, still wearing the warlord's uniform. He glanced at the half-dead Bai Jin, then his gaze fell on Duan Jiancheng: "You did this?"

Zhang Shufen stepped forward and blocked Duan Jiancheng's path: "Second Brother, I told him to do it."

Duan Jiancheng smiled and said, "Yes, so what?"

Zhang Wenbin's expression was unreadable; he simply glanced at Zhang Shufen with a reproachful look and said, "Little sister, you were too impulsive."

Before Zhang Shufen could speak, Zhang Wenbin ordered his men, "Clean it up."

"Come out with me."

Bai Jin thought Zhang Wenbin had come to rescue him, but he never expected...

He was about to speak when his mouth was covered, and he was instantly dragged down.

It was already dark outside.

Zhang Wenbin handed a letter to Duan Jiancheng: "It was sent by your family."

Duan Jiancheng was very puzzled: "Where did you get it from?"

Zhang Wenbin: "Where you got it from is not important. What's important is that you should take a look at the contents as soon as possible."

Duan Jiancheng's heart suddenly started racing. He opened the letter from home; it was in his father's handwriting. The contents were simple, mentioning only two things: first, their hometown had been occupied by the Japanese, and they could only hide in the countryside temporarily, afraid to go out.

Fortunately, the stationed troops could protect them for the time being. Another problem was that their eldest brother was gone... and had died several months ago; even his remains couldn't be brought back...

Duan Jiancheng suddenly felt dizzy.

Zhang Shufen: "What's wrong?"

She picked up the letter from home and burst into tears.

Her voice trembled: "Your older brother... Duan Jianmin?"

Duan Jiancheng closed his eyes and nodded painfully.

So... he and Chen Fan never met until their deaths, and they both believed the other was still alive.
