When Duan Jiancheng woke up, he found himself in a hospital with an IV drip in his hand.
Just as he was about to sit up, the door to the ward was pushed open.
He looked up and saw Zhang Shufen walk in. The Shufen outside the school was completely different from the Shufen inside the school.
Even with her head wrapped in gauze, she was still wearing a cute and pretty dress, and her wavy hair was neatly arranged at the back of her head and fixed with a butterfly hairpin, making her look just like a delicate doll.
She saw that he was awake and quickly went over to him: "The doctor said you have a mild concussion, and you need to stay in the hospital for observation for a few more days."
Duan Jiancheng: "Thank you, Senior Shufen, for the medical expenses..."
Zhang Shufen: "You don't need to worry about that."
Duan Jiancheng: "This isn't quite right..."
Zhang Shufen laughed: "The police station injured you, so naturally the police station should pay you. What are you thinking?"
Duan Jiancheng's face inexplicably turned red; he thought...
She sat down by the bed and whispered about what happened after he fell into a coma: "Sister Xu Zhuqing arrived relatively quickly, but the teachers at the school were also trying to rescue us."
"How so?"
"Several professors went to the government and even said that if they didn't release the people, they would starve to death."
As Zhang Shufen spoke, her eyes reddened, and she turned away to wipe away her tears.
"You should rest first, I..."
Just as she was about to get up, she heard Duan Jiancheng say, "It will be alright."
So she turned around and met his eyes. It was the same eyes they had when they were teenagers, and they saw in each other's eyes a shared faith that belonged only to them.
Later, when winter came to the capital, they were given a holiday.
Because of icy roads and the fact that ships bound for various places were being held up by foreigners, students at the school were unable to leave Kyoto and had to spend the New Year crammed into the school.
They thought they would be greeted by New Year's fireworks, but instead, they were met with indiscriminate artillery fire.
That night, Kyoto was engulfed in gunfire. The cries of children were drowned out by the explosions, buildings collapsed one after another, and most of the students fled to air-raid shelters, where they remained silent.
Finally, dawn broke.
They ran outside, only to find smoke and severed limbs scattered everywhere.
The cries were incessant, and many people were still buried under the rubble.
Zhang Shufen appeared at this moment. She was wearing a school uniform, with two braids, and she carried a child out of the ruins. She was dirty and her eyes were full of panic. That's how Duan Jiancheng saw her.
He rushed over almost without thinking.
Teacher: "Class! Don't just stand there, quick, help!"
So everyone joined the rescue effort.
Duan Jiancheng took the child from her arms and ran with her under the eaves.
A moment later, a roaring sound arose.
The teachers' eyes widened in fury: "Quick! Hide! Students!"
Zhang Shufen, camera in hand, rushed out without hesitation. When Duan Jiancheng turned back, he saw her standing on Central Avenue, taking pictures of the airplanes in the sky.
"Shufen!! Come back!!" At this moment, Duan Jiancheng felt fear.
"Bang—" The bomb exploded right in front of Duan Jiancheng. He could only turn around to protect the child beneath him, but his heart was throbbing with a dull pain. However, the next second...
"Comrade Jiancheng, I'm here."
Duan Jiancheng looked up in disbelief and saw Zhang Shufen, looking like a dirty bun, laughing and waving the camera in her hand.
She said, "I'm very agile. I need to stay alive and fight them to the end. Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to me..."
Duan Jiancheng didn't say anything, but simply hugged the person, child and all, tightly.
This was their first hug.
"You scared me to death, Zhang Shufen." Duan Jiancheng's hands were trembling as he said this.
Zhang Shufen was stunned, but she still smiled and hugged him back.
By the time the two finished their work, it was already late at night. They were squatting in a corner, eating steamed buns. Chen Fan, Liu Enrang, and Zhou Yuwen were there.
Liu Enrang: "What do you want to do after graduation?"
Zhou Yuwen: "I want to be a pilot, one of the first pilots in China. When the time comes, we'll fly our fighter jets and kill all those foreign devils!"
Liu Enrang sighed, "But we don't have a plane yet, Young Master Zhou, what are you thinking about?"
Zhou Yuwen's eyes dimmed for a moment, but quickly brightened again: "It's okay, I believe we will be able to build our own airplane one day."
Chen Fan: "I also believe that there are so many of us, we're really amazing."
Zhang Shufen nodded while munching on a steamed bun: "Yes! I believe it too! My older brother said that we students should study hard, because there are many other things to do besides fighting."
Chen Fan: "My older brother went to join the army, so it's just me and my sister-in-law in the family now. But my sister-in-law is pregnant, and I'm so happy."
Liu Enrang: "That's pretty good."
"Shufen, what do you want to do?"
Zhang Shufen's eyes were bright, and she had a camera hanging around her neck. She looked at the starless night sky and said, "I want to be a reporter."
"And you, Jiancheng?"
Duan Jiancheng snapped out of his daze, smiled, and said, "I'm willing to do anything that can save the country."
"And what about Chen Fan? You still haven't said what you want to do."
So everyone looked at Chen Fan.
Chen Fan had a hint of shyness on his baby face, but he still smiled and said, "I want to be a battlefield medic."
In Jianmin's letter, he mentioned that if they had more doctors and more medicine, perhaps not so many people would have died. Although it was just a few words, she remembered it. She wanted to become a doctor and save more and more people.
