6. Fools sometimes have good fortune.
He Tian is a single-minded tech guy. In his world, there's only one thing happening at a time, and he won't have any major emotional fluctuations if that thing is interrupted or even stopped. When he was a child, all he knew was studying. If his mother yelled at him to go out and exercise, he would put down his books and go out for a while before coming back to study. Now, all he knows is work. Sometimes, even if He Miao yells at him, he'll go out for a walk. He won't move unless he's yelled at.
As for what the family lacked or what he should wear, he knew nothing. He Miao's assessment of him was: "Life skills, negative points. No, even negative points are an overestimation, it's abyss level." She added, "I don't even dare to leave Gun Gun with him alone, for fear that he will lose both of his sons."
From a young age, she heard her mother complain about her father, saying things like he'd starve to death even if she put a perfectly baked pancake around his neck because it was too far from his mouth, and how miserable he'd be if she died first. But when her mother was out, her father's cooking was actually better than her mother's. It was just that when her mother returned, her father would say he'd just bought something from outside. This secret between Yi Yi and her father—she wondered if her mother was still unaware of it.
But He Tian's attitude towards work was just like his attitude towards learning back then—once he got into it, he couldn't get out. He wasn't the smooth talker at the dinner table; he knew nothing about international affairs, gossip, or dirty jokes. Only when discussing game design and user experience would he become animated and eloquent. At a gathering of his fellow students, one of them noticed his silent focus and brought him into a startup company, where he was never treated unfairly.
He Miao said he was "foolish but lucky," otherwise how could he have married a beauty of my "caliber"!
However, sometimes good fortune can play a cruel joke on people.
The call was from the medical examination center. After answering, He Miao felt as if all her bones had been removed; she slumped into the coffee shop sofa, her face deathly pale. Spilled coffee spread across the table like an ominous stain.
Yi Yi quickly went over and hugged her: "Don't panic, don't scare yourself! It's just further examination, it doesn't necessarily mean a bad result!"
He Miao trembled in Yi Yi's arms for a while, then gradually calmed down. The first thing she did was call her insurance agent.
“He Tian may have a thyroid problem; the hospital wants further tests. Does our insurance cover that?” Her voice was still trembling, but her words were clear and logical.
"Sister He, don't worry, we've purchased high-end medical insurance, so it's definitely covered. When is a convenient time for you to go for a checkup? I'll make an appointment for you." The salesperson's voice was professional and steady.
"Could you please help me schedule an appointment with a reliable specialist? In case further treatment is needed, I need the most reliable treatment plan." "Understood, I'll let you know when the appointment is made."
After hanging up the phone, He Miao explained to Yi Yi, "After Gun Gun was born, I got insurance for all of us. He Tian was the priority; he had critical illness insurance, life insurance, and high-end medical insurance. We increased the coverage amount in the last two years. I also bought high-value critical illness insurance for myself. Although I don't earn money, I can't be a burden on the family. If I get seriously ill, we won't have to sell the house or the car." She gave a bitter smile, "I didn't buy life insurance. Anyway, I have no income, so if I pass away, there will be no one to cook for them."
Yi Yi felt a mix of emotions upon hearing this: "You've thought of everything so thoroughly." In contrast, her own vague unease and anxiety seemed to stem from this lack of foresight.
"He who does not plan for the future will have trouble in the present." He Miao stared blankly out the window. "But even though I did plan for the future, trouble still came. Financial arrangements can only provide a safety net. What I want is this person by my side, to be with me for a long time, to walk this not-so-easy road of life together."
Forever and ever? Is it really that difficult?
When He Miao first came to Beijing, it was to be with another person "forever." The senior who had pursued her for two years, the senior with whom she had a long-distance relationship for four years, told her, "Sorry, I'm going to Shenzhen with her," when she arrived in Beijing full of expectations to be with him forever.
Of course, that "she" is not her.
She didn't say anything, and she didn't even cry. She just silently shed tears when she turned her back.
He Tian saw the tears. He said the most beautiful thing he had ever said: "You smile so beautifully, I will never let you cry again."
What she thought was the most wonderful thing in her life was gone without any warning. What hope is there left in life? He Miao, who was in despair, didn't even have time to think about what to do next, but she was amused by this sentence.
However, when she saw him, she felt a dull ache.
He's not as handsome as him, nor as dashing. He's short and unremarkable; you'd be completely lost in a crowd.
But his simple, honest smile was like a bowl of steaming white porridge on a winter's day—it had little flavor, but it warmed you right up to your stomach.
He Miao silently warned herself, could it be that her heart had grown cold and she desperately needed warmth? She deliberately kept a certain distance, but she was still gradually drawn to him. He didn't talk much, but every word he spoke was meaningful.
The idea of "lasting forever" thus shifted to He Tian.
From then on, she really kept smiling, and ten years later, she may be hit with a blow.
During the days of waiting for the biopsy results, the atmosphere at home was strange. He Tian was still the same as always, quietly scrolling through his phone and playing games; the usually boisterous He Miao quieted down and pretended everything was normal; even the mischievous Gun Gun sensed the oddity in the air.
He ran up to He Miao, let out a "poof!" fart, and then exaggeratedly fanned himself, saying, "It stinks so bad!" He Miao didn't even acknowledge him. Normally, He Miao would have jumped up and yelled, "You brat, can't you go to the toilet to fart?!"
"Mommy," Gun Gun called out sweetly, "Are you sick?"
The word "sick" pierced He Miao like a needle. She sat bolt upright. "No, what's wrong?"
"But why haven't you scolded me these past few days?" Gun Gun said with a grin.
"Is Mom really that fierce?" He Miao asked in surprise, as she had always considered herself gentle.
To everyone's surprise, He Tian and Gun Gun said in unison, "Yes!"
How they wished she would jump up again, yelling, "Where am I being fierce? I just asked you to take things out of their places and put them back where they belonged! I just asked you to put your socks in the laundry basket!"
However, He Miao simply said, "Oh!"
He Tian glanced at her but didn't say anything. He wasn't a talkative person to begin with.
Gun Gun tried every trick in the book to "get scolded": deliberately scattering Lego everywhere, being picky about food, and clamoring to watch cartoons before bed... He Miao never got angry, but just wearily cleaned up or tried to persuade him weakly.
"Mommy, you've changed these past few days." Gun Gun Gun went to her side and asked with a grin, "Are you possessed by a witch?"
He Miao replied absentmindedly, "Hmm."
Suddenly, Gun Gun started punching and kicking her. He Miao, hurt from the blows, finally shouted, "What are you doing, Gun Gun!"
Gun Gun laughed happily, "I chased the witch away, and my mother is back."
The next day, the biopsy results came back: a benign nodule, requiring regular monitoring. The real "witch" had finally escaped completely.
He Tian chuckled and said, "Didn't I tell you I wouldn't let you cry? Why didn't you believe me? I knew I'd be fine."
He Miao, with tears streaming down her face, retorted sharply, "Who said I would cry! Who cares about you? Do whatever you want. I'll just find a young, handsome guy later."
Upon learning the result, Yi Yi breathed a sigh of relief. That evening, she talked to Zhuang Jia about insurance. She wanted to get critical illness and life insurance for Zhuang Jia as well, but unexpectedly, she met with strong opposition.
"Didn't the company already provide them?" Zhuang Jia frowned.
“The company has many restrictions,” Yi Yi tried to keep her tone calm, “For example, you lose all benefits if you leave, and the coverage is also narrow…”
"What restrictions? I'm perfectly healthy," Zhuang Jia said, sounding somewhat impatient.
"Risks don't discriminate based on physical condition. What if... I mean, what if..."
"What if what? If I die, the company will compensate me. If the plane crashes, they'll pay five million. That's enough for you guys to live on." Zhuang Jia interrupted her, her tone a bit sharp.
"That's not what I meant!" Yi Yi exclaimed anxiously. "I meant that if we have a serious illness, and the medical insurance and company supplemental medical insurance aren't enough, we'll need..."
"You need the insurance company to step in, huh?" Zhuang Jia sneered. "I hate that insurance rhetoric the most, like 'the pillar of the family falls and the insurance company takes over.' It sounds like bad luck! Are they cursing me?"
"Can't you be reasonable?!" Yi Yi raised her voice, then immediately lowered it again. She wasn't good at arguing; if she did, she would lose control of her emotions and say hurtful things. She took a deep breath and chose to remain silent.
The problem wasn't solved by not arguing; it was simply put on hold.
Like a silent elephant in a room, everyone can see it, but no one dares to expose it.
Meanwhile, He Miao's home was brightly lit. She was "lecturing" He Tian: "From now on, you must have your annual physical examination on time! If you miss even one, I'll never forgive you!"
He Tian, holding the game console, nodded his head like a chick pecking at rice: "Yes, sir."
Looking at him like this, He Miao suddenly felt that perhaps it was true that fools are sometimes lucky. It's just that this "luck" requires a bit of foresight and a great deal of love to hold onto firmly.
She walked over, took his game console, and leaned against him. He Tian was stunned for a moment, then put down his phone and gently wrapped his arms around her.
Outside the window, the night is gentle. Some storms have subsided temporarily, while others are quietly gathering in unseen places.
