“Man’er, um…” Xu Genshu looked at his niece with some embarrassment, thinking to himself, why does Fu Man’er have to watch over everything I do?
She opened the door when I came home late copying books before, and she watched me get beaten and left lying in bed. Now, well, now she's seen me helping others too.
"Hmm?" Fu Man'er finally opened her eyes from the woman, and her dark, grape-like eyes looked at Xu Genshu, making him feel short of breath for a moment.
"This older sister's things are too heavy, she can't lift them, so my uncle is helping her." Xu Genshu tried to appear calm.
"Oh." Fu Man'er nodded, looking at the bag on the ground. It was unclear whether she believed Xu Genshu's words or not. The woman puffed up her pretty face and didn't say anything, creating a slightly awkward atmosphere.
"Hmm, it is indeed quite heavy. Let me help you, sister." When Fu Man'er looked over, the two of them were pushing and shoving the burlap sack. It must have been too heavy for either of them to lift.
"Hey..." Just as the woman was about to stop her, Fu Man'er picked up the bag with both hands, exerted her strength, and swung it back, and the burlap bag landed steadily on Fu Man'er's back.
"Sister, is this your home?" She had just seen the woman push open the door.
But the woman was too surprised to speak. Fu Man'er looked at Xu Genshu with questioning eyes. After the latter nodded mechanically, Fu Man'er carried the sack and went inside without looking back.
That sack was quite large, completely covering Fu Man'er's small body. At first glance, you might not believe it, but the sack had grown legs.
My God, Xu Genshu finally came to his senses and hurriedly chased after them, "Man'er, put it down quickly, or it will hurt you." By the time they caught up with them, Fu Man'er had already put the sack under the eaves.
Wang Erni was a very generous person. "Man'er, you are really amazing." Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Fu Man'er with admiration.
The woman knelt down in front of Fu Man'er and asked anxiously, "Little girl, are you alright? Is your shoulder hurt? Are your hands hurt?"
As she spoke, she reached out and took Fu Man'er's hand to look at it. Her palm was white and tender, fleshy and soft, just like a little dumpling, without a single red mark.
"I'm fine." Fu Man'er let her look at her hands, her eyes also taking in the woman in front of her. This older sister is really beautiful.
"Si'an, don't worry, Man'er is quite strong, she should be fine." Xu Genshu also squatted down. Although he didn't go home often, he had heard from his family that his little niece ate a lot and was very strong, but this was the first time he had seen her.
Huang Si'an stood up abruptly, moving a little further away from Xu Genshu. "Since everything's alright, you should leave now." Her tone became harsh. "And this bag of grain, I don't need it."
Xu Genshu hadn't even settled down properly when he had to stand up as well. "Si'an, I spent a lot of time and effort getting this grain back. Do you need to leave it all with me?"
"No, take it away."
"No, it has to be kept here."

Wang Erni and Fu Man'er were standing side by side at some point. The two of them looked at each other, their eyes almost unable to move, and their conversation finally stopped.
Huang Si'an angrily opened the courtyard gate and shouted at Xu Genshu, "Get out of here, or don't blame me for being impolite. Don't think you're so great just because you passed the imperial examination. I'll still beat you." As he spoke, he picked up a broom from the side.
"Okay, we'll leave right away." He stopped arguing with Huang Si'an, grabbed one of them with each hand, and pulled the two onlookers out.
Huang Si'an slammed the door shut, turned around angrily, and when she saw the bag of grain, she realized that she had been tricked by Xu Genshu again and had forgotten about the important matter.
But when she opened the door, the person was already gone. She kicked the door in frustration, looked at the bag of grain, and sighed.
This was the first time Fu Man'er had seen her uncle act like a child, leading them on a crazy run, afraid that Huang Si'an would catch up. They only slowed down when they were almost home.
Before entering the house, Xu Genshu called out to Fu Man'er, looking like he had something to say but didn't know where to begin. Fu Man'er was understanding and said, "Uncle, I'll pretend I don't know anything about what happened today."
Xu Genshu was so moved that he almost cried. "My dear Man'er, you are such a good niece. Tomorrow when your uncle goes to town, I will buy you candy. I will buy you a big bag of candy."
Fu Man'er nodded vigorously, looking like a good girl. Little did Xu Genshu know that she wasn't talking about it at home today, but she was going to Huang Si'an's house tomorrow. Hearing from others was never as good as asking herself.
However, Fu Man'er didn't get to go to Huang Si'an's house the next day.

The Xu family has already chosen the land to build their house. Since they have a large family and don't plan to live separately, the house they want to build will be quite large.
Now all the good locations in the village have been built, and the remaining places are not only expensive but also have small plots of land. After discussing it with his family, Old Xu decided that even if the houses weren't located by the main road, it wouldn't matter, as the whole family would still live comfortably.
Without much deliberation, they chose a large, barren piece of land, but it was cheap. Village chief Zhou Yongkang readily led his men to the government office to process the land deed.
The Xu family is not what it used to be. Putting aside the fact that Old Man Xu's waterwheel received an official reward, Xu Genshu passing the imperial examination to become a Xiucai (a scholar who passed the lowest level of the imperial examinations) is also quite remarkable.
He didn't know what fate might bring him in the future, but as the only scholar in Dashi Village, he certainly deserved to be cherished.
Hearing that the Xu family was building a house, he even helped them pick out a few good ones, intending to offer them a discount as a favor to the Xu family. But who knew that they didn't like any of them and chose a remote, out-of-the-way place instead.
He had originally intended to offer some words of advice, but Old Xu said, "Our Man'er likes that place, so let's just go there."
This is ridiculous! When building a house, should we listen to only one child? Zhou Yongkang thought that the waterwheel was made by Fu Man'er and Old Man Xu together, so he had no choice but to shut up. Anyway, it wasn't his own house.
“Man’er, look at our new house, isn’t it big?” Old Xu said.
"Big, so big." Fu Man'er nodded, but it looked quite desolate now.

"Man'er, tell Grandpa, is the feng shui of this house good?" Old Xu bent down and whispered in his granddaughter's ear.
Feng shui? What is that? Fu Man'er looked puzzled. "When Grandpa asked you which place you liked, didn't you say this place was good?" Old Man Xu was getting a little anxious.
"Yes, this place is great." Fu Man'er nodded. The spiritual energy here is very abundant and continuous.
"What about feng shui?" Old Xu pressed on.
Fu Man'er was confused again; she had no idea what feng shui was.
"You old fool, why are you asking this? Do you think Man'er is a feng shui master?" Old Mrs. Xu stared at him, wide-eyed, when she heard his question.
"I'm not..." Old Xu didn't really believe in this, but looking at Fu Man'er, he couldn't help but ask.
Seeing that he was about to ask more questions, Old Mrs. Xu raised her hand as if to hit him, so Old Mr. Xu had no choice but to shut up.
“Grandpa, okay.” Fu Man’er tugged at his clothes.
"What's good?" The question came out of nowhere, and Old Xu didn't react at first.

“Feng shui, huh?” Fu Man’er put down the small bamboo basket she was carrying and took out a small hoe from it.
Old Mrs. Xu glanced at the old woman, who was weeding with her back to her, then picked up Fu Man'er with both hands and walked her to a place where Old Mrs. Xu couldn't hear her.
She asked again, "Man'er, do you think our house has good feng shui?"
Fu Man'er nodded, staring longingly at her bamboo basket, wondering why her grandfather had abandoned it.
"Then tell Grandpa, how exactly is this feng shui good?" Old Xu rubbed his hands together, looking very interested.
When Fu Man'er first came to the Xu family, she said it would rain. Later, she was right several times when it rained and the sky cleared. Old Master Xu thought that this little granddaughter was capable and that maybe she could say something insightful this time so that he could learn something from her.
“Look,” Fu Man’er pointed in front of her, “water.”
She tilted her head slightly so that Old Man Xu could see her hair fluttering in the wind. "Wind."
"Isn't this great?"
Ah, this...

Old Xu was dumbfounded. Was this really the feng shui?
"Grandpa, the feng shui here is amazing, I'm going to start working now." Fu Man'er inhaled the spiritual energy and felt her whole body was full of power. Now she could even do a somersault and smash through the ground.
Unfortunately, she's just a little kid now, and can only frantically dig the ground with her little hoe.
Old Xu chuckled twice, facing the wind and looking at the water, "Hehe, what great feng shui!"
