"Miss Man'er, please don't be angry. I'm just a mother's anxious heart and can't bear to see my daughter suffer," Mrs. Huang said with a smile.
"Oh," Fu Man'er replied lazily, glancing at Huang Mei.
"So Madam Huang dotes on her daughter so much. If I had known that Miss Huang was coming to repay her kindness yesterday, I would have invited Madam Huang along as well. If the two of them had come together to repay the kindness, Miss Huang would have suffered less grievance."
“It’s Madam Huang.” Fu Man’er’s face immediately turned sympathetic. “You’ll have to suffer a bit. After all, she’s your daughter, not mine, right? If you, as her mother, don’t suffer, who will suffer for her?”
The expressions of the Huang mother and daughter instantly became strange. The mother had only meant to say something polite to let the matter drop, but Fu Man'er took it seriously.

These words sounded strange, but no one knew how to refute them, so Huang's mother could only force a smile and swallow her anger.
To prevent Fu Man'er from saying anything more upsetting, Huang's mother started talking about other topics. Fu Man'er didn't want to listen to this rambling anymore, so she immediately said she had to go out.
This is essentially a way of sending them away; do you think the Huang mother and daughter can stay here any longer?
Seeing that Fu Man'er was not easily fooled, Huang's mother had no choice but to explain her purpose.
“Miss Man’er, I heard that the Xu family is mostly male. You have four older brothers and one younger brother, but no sisters.”
Fu Man'er remained silent, waiting for Huang's mother to continue.
“My Xiaomei is the same.” Huang’s mother said with a smile, holding her daughter’s hand. “She has been telling me since she was little that she would like to have a sister so that she would have a companion.”
"It's just that my body is not cooperating. Ever since I gave birth to Xiaomei, the doctor said that my health has been damaged and I can't have any more children."
As she spoke, a trace of sadness appeared on Huang's mother's face. Normally, she would offer some comfort at this point so that she could smoothly continue with what she was about to say, but Fu Man'er just stared at Huang's mother with her big eyes wide open.
This left Huang's mother in an awkward position, unable to hear anything from Fu Man'er, so she had no choice but to continue talking to herself.
“Normally, Xiaomei doesn’t interact with many people, and there aren’t any girls her age around her. I think Miss Man’er is about the same age as Xiaomei.”
“My Xiaomei has been learning music, chess, calligraphy and painting since she was a child, and she is about the same age as Miss Man’er, so she must have a lot to talk about.”
As Fu Man'er listened, her brows furrowed, and she interrupted Huang's mother.
"Wait, what do you mean? You're not going to tell me that your Xiaomei wants to be my sister, are you?"
How could anyone say such a thing?
Indeed, Madam Huang nodded. "Miss Man'er, you are also alone. I suppose you, like our young lady, also wish you had an older or younger sister. Wouldn't that be more interesting?"
Fu Man'er laughed; she found it somewhat amusing, but the Huang mother and daughter were completely baffled by her laughter.
Mother Huang asked tentatively, "Does this mean you agree?"
Fu Man'er grinned even wider, "Madam Huang, you've really got a clever plan."
"What abacus? Miss Man'er, what are you talking about?" Madam Huang pretended to be stupid.

"You mean all men have three wives and four concubines?" Fu Man'er suddenly asked.
"That's right. Look at our Yun Town. Which young master doesn't have one? Take our county magistrate, for example. He has eight concubines."
It seemed that Madam Huang had put in a lot of effort, as she named several wives and concubines of noble families. Fu Man'er listened and nodded.
"Then how many wives and concubines do you think a man should have?" This question stumped Huang's mother.
She only wanted her daughter to marry into the Xu family, and the fewer concubines the better, so that no one would compete with her daughter for favor.
Huang's mother glanced at Fu Man'er's expression, and seeing the sincerity in her question, she weighed her options and held up her hand, saying, "Three, I guess."
Fu Man'er nodded knowingly, "Okay, I understand."
"Well..." Huang's mother was a little unsure of Fu Man'er's meaning; did she agree or disagree?
"Shuangxi, let's see the guests out." After saying that, Fu Man'er looked at Huang's mother and said, "You should go back first."
"What about what we were talking about earlier?" Huang's mother still wanted to know the answer, but Shuangxi had already impatiently asked someone to pull them up.

"Hurry up."
Fu Man'er waved to them, "You guys go ahead, you'll find out when you get back."
The Huang family mother and daughter were asked to leave without any explanation. Huang Mei was still puzzled when they walked out the door.
"Mother, what does she mean by telling us to go back and wait for news?"
After thinking about it, Huang's mother guessed that was the same idea. "That's probably it. She probably needs to consider it too."
"However, I think she took what Mother said today to heart. Since men are going to find concubines anyway, it's better to help them find them themselves than to let them do it outside. That way, it's easier to keep an eye on them."
"If she were smart, she would definitely agree."
"What if she doesn't agree?" Huang Mei had suffered at Fu Man'er's hands before, and she always felt that things wouldn't be so easy.
"Let's wait for her letter. Let's go back first." The mother and daughter had hired a horse-drawn carriage to come, and now they had to walk to the village entrance to wait for it.
The two had only taken a few steps when a carriage sped past them. Huang Mei recognized it as the Xu family's carriage.

"That Fu Man'er is really stingy. She has a carriage but doesn't even know to give us a ride," Huang Mei complained.
Huang's mother comforted her for a few words, and the two of them went to the village entrance to wait for the carriage. Strangely enough, there were many carriages coming and going on the road, but they all drove very fast, and they couldn't stop them.
It wasn't until almost dark that the mother and daughter managed to flag down a carriage to go home. Before they even entered the house, Huang's mother heard the sound of musical instruments being played coming from her courtyard.
