Chapter 45 Strange Dreams

The Xu family ate only a small portion of the mostly-filled pot of offal; the rest they planned to sell in town, though they didn't have much hope for it.

After all, pig offal is something that not only wealthy people look down on, but even those who are poor wouldn't spend money to buy it.

Grandma Xu didn't go with them; she let the eldest son and his wife go to sell the goods, along with their little one, Fu Man'er.

The couple left home just as dawn was breaking. When some villagers saw the Xu family pushing their cart out again, there was bound to be a lot of gossip.

"The Xu family got a wild boar yesterday, what good stuff are they selling today?"

"Are they probably selling yesterday's wild boar meat?"

"Bullshit, when I went to buy wild boar meat yesterday, there wasn't much left. I just saw that Xu Genshan's cart had firewood and a big pot on it. I wonder what he's selling."

"Hey, the Xu family is so quiet. I was about to go to sleep yesterday when I could smell a fragrance coming from their yard."

"You can't sleep because you smell the aroma of wild boar meat, can you?"

"Get lost, you're the one who can't sleep. I think the Xu family is having a stroke of good luck."

After a few words of discussion, the people dispersed. If they hadn't dispersed, Wang Sanbao, who was sleeping inside, would have come out to chase them away. How could anyone get a good night's sleep so early in the morning?

But after tossing and turning several times, he still couldn't fall asleep. So he fumbled for his clothes and got dressed. The weather was getting warmer and warmer, and the sun was rising early.

"Chunnier, where's your mother?" He pushed open the door and saw his daughter sitting on the threshold, staring blankly, seemingly lost in thought.

Wang Chunni turned around when she heard the voice and said softly, "Mother is at the door with my younger brother."

There were people talking outside early in the morning, so Niu Daya simply took her son and went out to see what was going on.

Just then, Niu Daya returned carrying Wang Dacai, apparently having overheard quite a bit outside.

"Sanbao, do you still remember the Xu family who bought our land a while ago?"

"Huh?" Wang Sanbao didn't immediately realize which Xu family it was.

Niu Daya added, "It's the eldest son who's a hunter, the one with a limp, who lives at the foot of the back mountain."

Now that he heard this, Wang Sanbao remembered that he had negotiated a lot of prices when he bought his land. His land was just lying fallow with no yield anyway, and then some unlucky guy came along to take it over. Even though the price was low, he still sold it.

"I just heard that the Xu family found a wild boar at the foot of the back mountain yesterday. It weighed four or five hundred pounds, and now they're taking something to town to sell."

Niu Daya looked on with envy. She wished her family could also catch wild boars. Not only could they eat their fill, but they could also sell them for a lot of money.

Wang Sanbao didn't react much to this. He thought everyone was exaggerating. Wild boars weren't so easy to find. Most likely, it was the hunter from the Xu family who hunted them. "Finding" was just an excuse.

Wang Chunni, who had initially been uninterested, suddenly perked up. "Mom, how many Xu families are there in our village?"

"Two, I guess. One is at the foot of the back mountain, and the other is the family that just moved in next door. The two old men are brothers, look how well they live."

Wang Chunni turned her head to look at the neighbor's yard. She had been living with her grandmother at her great-aunt's house since after the New Year and had just returned yesterday. Through her own yard fence, she could see the blue brick and concrete exterior wall of the neighbor's house. It must be a wealthy family.

"I also heard that the Xu family at the foot of this mountain picked up a baby girl. I don't know what they were thinking. They're so poor that they had to buy our wasteland, yet they still raised a money-losing child."

"Luckily, our family is smart; we killed that one early on~~~~"

"Cough cough cough." Seeing that his wife was talking more and more outrageous, Wang Sanbao coughed twice and gave her a wink, "The child is here, what nonsense are you talking about?"

Niu Daya swallowed the words that were about to come out. Wang Dacai was only two years old and didn't listen to what she said at all. As for Wang Chunni, she had just turned her gaze back from the next yard and didn't seem to be paying attention to what she was saying either.

"Mother, where is Zhaodi?" Wang Chunni asked. She had traveled all day yesterday and went to sleep as soon as she got back. Zhaodi usually gets up early to boil water. She had been sitting in the courtyard for a while but hadn't seen her.

"Huh?" Niu Daya was stunned for a moment before she reacted. "That brat was seriously ill a while ago. I was afraid she would pass the illness on to your brother, so I kicked her out."

Wang Chunni's delicate eyebrows furrowed, her little face showing displeasure. "If you chase people away, who will boil water, do laundry, and sweep the floor?"

These are all tasks that Zhao Di does. For example, she hasn't had hot water to wash her face yet today.

Niu Daya patted her on the shoulder, "Lazy girl, I think you've become lazy at your great-aunt's house. You just sit there as soon as you get up. Go on, put your clothes on and comb your hair. You'll have to learn to do these things for me from now on."

Wang Chunni was even more unhappy. When they were at her great-aunt's house, her family had paid someone to take care of them, and the rest of the family didn't have to do anything.

Speaking of this, she remembered the dream she had last night, a strange dream.

Perhaps because she was used to sleeping on a soft couch at her great-aunt's house, she didn't sleep well on her own hard bed. She tossed and turned all night and had several fragmented dreams.

In her dream, she was standing in a very, very big and beautiful courtyard. It was a two-story courtyard, and only a few landlords in the village had two-story courtyards.

She had seen it from afar, but didn't know what it looked like inside. In her dream, there was a small courtyard with a lotus pond, beautiful stones, and many flowers.

There is also a small bridge with stone handrails carved with patterns I've never seen before, but they are very beautiful.

People kept walking back and forth in the courtyard, all dressed in the same clothes and carrying trays, as if they were bringing something into the house.

She wanted to go in and take a look when she heard someone calling for Master Xu and Madam Xu. Just as the person being called was about to turn around, she was awakened by the voices outside.

Wang Chunni desperately wanted to know who those two people were, so she immediately pulled the blanket over her head, trying to fall back asleep, but no matter what she did, she couldn't sleep.

She had dreams before, but none of them had ever felt so real, especially since she had just heard her mother talk about the Xu family, and in her dream she was calling out to Master Xu and Madam Xu.

Only wealthy families would shout like that. Did I dream about the Xu family next door last night?

Wang Chunni was also feeling down for a moment, blaming those gossipy women for disturbing her sweet dreams.

"Wang Chunni, what are you still sitting there for? Wait for your mother to serve you!" Niu Daya came out of the kitchen and saw her daughter still sitting outside, so she shouted at the top of her lungs.

She muttered to herself that getting rid of that brat was really not a good thing; she would have a lot of things to do now. She just hoped that the good days for the Wang family would come soon; she was ready.
