Chapter 406: Duplicity

When the doctor heard what I said, he laughed.

She looked to be in her forties, and with an auntie's smile, she looked at Yan Meng and me and said, "You young people these days really don't know how to talk properly when you're in love. One is obviously afraid of being disliked, and the other is obviously distressed, yet one of you insists on saying the opposite."

The doctor thought we were a couple. I subconsciously glanced at Yan Meng and saw a rare blush on his face, as if he was embarrassed after being exposed.

"Who... who is in love with him? We have nothing to do with each other." I clarified quickly, not wanting the doctor to misunderstand.

Yan Meng sighed in mock disappointment: "Alas, I'm being disliked again."

The doctor looked at the two of us, smiled but said nothing, probably thinking we were a couple of funny people.

This shame was brought to the hospital. I glared at Yan Meng angrily, but he didn't care at all.

After treating Yan Meng's injuries, he certainly wouldn't be able to drive back in this condition, so I decided to be a good person and send him home.

Because I had been to Yan Meng's house once when he was allergic, I didn't need to ask for directions and drove the car accurately to the downstairs of Yan Meng's house.

I got out of the car and opened the passenger door: "Please come in, Director Yan."

I suddenly felt like I had been playing the role of Yan Meng's driver and assistant all day.

Yan Meng got off the car but refused to get on alone.

He asked me unhappily, "Aren't you going to take me up?"

"Hmm?" I felt like he was getting a little over the top.

Yan Meng raised his hands. Both of his hands were wrapped in gauze, and even the gaps between his fingers were indistinguishable. He complained to me aggrievedly, "Do you think I can open the door like this?"

I held my forehead helplessly, I had forgotten about this.

I walked Yan Meng to his doorstep and asked him, "What's the password?"

"You know."

I was stunned for a moment, met his affirmative eyes, and suddenly realized that he had not changed the password after I sent him back last time.

I unlocked the door, muttering as I pulled it open, "You'd better change the password."

"Why?" Yan Meng walked into the room slowly and said jokingly, "Don't worry, I'm not afraid of you suddenly breaking in."

I was speechless. I handed him the car keys and said, "I'm afraid if something goes missing from your house, I'll be suspected for no reason."

After saying that, I closed the door for him and refused to argue with him anymore.

I hailed a car from the roadside and returned to the Lan family villa. As soon as I entered the living room, I saw Mingsi sitting on the sofa with a worried look on his face.

Even though I was extremely tired and really wanted to lie down on the bed, I still said hello to Mingsi.

"Mom, I'm back."

Hearing my voice, Mingsi suddenly raised his head, stood up, pulled me to sit down, and asked with concern: "Did you and Yan Meng go to check today? Did you get any results?"

I shook my head. "It's been too long. The records from over twenty years ago aren't complete, and there's no record of where the Lan family found me. All we know is that the time between when I was lost and when I was adopted wasn't that long."

"But within a month, I felt more like I was deliberately taken away and sold by a nanny or someone else, as if they were eager to get rid of me."

These are just my guesses, but they made Mingsi's face turn pale and his expression was filled with fear.

She held my hand tightly, as if she was afraid that I would disappear again if she let go.

"No matter what, it's a blessing in disguise that you were adopted by the kindhearted Lan couple."
