Lu Zhiyuan stared at Lu Jing in the coffin without blinking, and even his hands that were holding on to the coffin were shaking.
The funeral home's makeup artist asked tentatively, "I've tried my best to restore it, but his head hit the ground and it's completely disfigured, so I can only restore it to this state. Are you satisfied? If not, I can do more."
At this moment, Lu Zhiyuan couldn't hear what others were saying at all.
I sighed, walked over to the makeup artist, stuffed a red envelope in his hand, and said on his behalf, "It's fine. Thank you for your hard work. I want to confirm the funeral arrangements with you. Let's go out and talk."
The person in charge of the funeral home and the makeup artist walked out first. I looked back at Lu Zhiyuan. His eyes were red and he looked like he was suppressing his emotions, which made my nose ache.
Give him space to vent his emotions.
I walked out quietly and took care of the arrangements for the funeral.
About half an hour later, I saw Lu Zhiyuan coming out. Although his eyes were still red, his mood had improved a lot.
He walked over to me, and I handed him the guest list: "I have already notified all relatives and friends. Here is the list. Please see if there is anyone missing."
Lu Zhiyuan took it but did not look at it.
He looked at me with tired but passionate eyes and said in a hoarse voice, "Xiao Shan, thank you."
"Don't be like this." I patted his arm gently. "I used to call him 'Dad', so it's only natural for me to do this..."
Before I could finish my words, Lu Zhiyuan suddenly reached out and hugged me. He tightened his arms, as if afraid that I would push him away.
He choked and whispered in my ear: "Xiao Shan, I will never have a father again..."
Those words pierced my heart and made me feel sad. I raised my hand and lowered it silently. I knew how fragile he was at that moment, and I wanted to stay with him through it.
On the day of the funeral, all the relatives and friends of the Lu family came to see Lu Jing for the last time, and the whole hall was filled with sobs.
Zhao Xian seemed to have lost her soul. She stood beside Lu Jing's coffin, her eyes fixed on Lu Jing inside, tears silently streaming down her face. She turned a deaf ear to the comfort from her relatives and friends.
I could only entertain everyone on her behalf and be polite.
Surprisingly, Mingsi also came to the funeral.
When I saw her, I couldn't help but be stunned.
Because of what Zhao Xian did to me in the past, Mingsi didn't like the Lu family. I just mentioned the funeral to her casually and didn't think she would come.
I hurried over and asked, "Mom, why are you here?"
Mingsi held my hand and said gently and generously, "No matter what, you were once the daughter-in-law of the Lu family. As a former relative, if I don't come, others will poke your spine."
She asked with concern: "Where's Lu Zhiyuan? Is he okay?"
I looked at Lu Zhiyuan, who was surrounded and comforted by the guests.
He has been busy with the funeral and taking care of Zhao Xian these past two days. He looks much more haggard and has a scruffy beard, so he doesn't even have time to shave. Now he has to force himself to deal with all these real and fake concerns.
Mingsi followed my gaze and sighed softly: "It's hard for him."
Mingsi went to the cashier's desk to give the gift money, then walked up to Zhao Xian politely and said words of comfort to her.
I walked over to Lu Zhiyuan and helped him deal with the guests so that he could breathe a sigh of relief, but I didn't know that Mingsi saw all of this.
Mingsi pulled me aside, frowning, and questioned me unhappily, "It's fine that you came to the funeral, but why did you even entertain the guests for them? You and Lu Zhiyuan are divorced, and you have no ties with the Lu family anymore. How can you face those Lu family friends and relatives?"
