Chapter 17

Chapter 17

The results were a bit surprising, but also made sense. Wang Jiazhi's grades were even better than she'd imagined. If things were fair and just, the scholarship would be fine, it was just a matter of rank.

Huang Liju finally failed only two subjects, and miraculously passed English, so she didn't have to repeat the grade.

Huang Liju was very grateful to Wang Jiazhi and gave her a brooch.

During the holiday, Wang Jiazhi worked hard on her writing. Although her previous works were not accepted, she still had confidence in herself.

That day, she finished her steamed buns, pickled vegetables and coffee in the cafeteria as usual. When she passed by the pastry counter, she took a closer look at the strawberry cake in the glass cabinet.

The cafeteria's new dessert is a triangular cake, revealing a golden base that's been generously egged. It has a pink cream center with a large strawberry slice, topped with pink cream and four large, vibrant strawberries.

The smell of the cakes at the pastry stall was very tempting, and she would always take a look at the cakes, but she didn't want to look too hard.

When she walked out of the cafeteria, she heard someone calling her from behind. When she turned around, it was Zhou Minlin.

Zhou Minlin said: "You are here too, why didn't I see you just now?"

"Yeah, I didn't see you either."

The two sat down on a bench under the shade of a tree, and Zhou Minlin mentioned the matter of Huangli Ju.

Wang Jiazhi said, "I told her not to tell anyone else."

Zhou Minlin smiled and said, "She didn't say it publicly. I just happened to hear it when she mentioned it to Xiaoshuang."

Wang Jiazhi said, "That's good. Fortunately, you know it. If it were someone else, I don't know what to say."

Then he sighed and said, "Tell me, how did I become like this? I used to hate seeing people use these unfair means, and now I want others to do the same. It seems that I have corrupted Huangliju."

Zhou Minlin said, "What's the big deal? In a society based on human relationships, there's no such thing as absolute fairness. Of course, we shouldn't do anything that's against the will of heaven or morality, but this kind of trivial matter is harmless. You didn't teach her bad things, you taught her the ways of the world and the ways of survival. People can't live too naively. People who are too naive may be hurt badly by others and by reality."

Wang Jiazhi said, "That's true. He's so naive that he might really be plotted against."

Zhou Minlin said, "I might have to return the book you borrowed from me later."

Wang Jiazhi said, "I'm not in a hurry to see you. It doesn't matter when you return."

Zhou Minlin said, "The books in the library are not as good as yours."

Wang Jiazhi said, "Yes, this book of fonts, illustrations, and annotations is very good. If it weren't so badly damaged, I wouldn't be able to afford it."

Zhou Minlin said, "In the past, I only liked to read official history, as I found it grand and majestic. I couldn't get through romance or sleazy novels. Now, I really enjoy reading 'Jin Ping Mei'. The grandeur of history is an ideal state, while the mundane calculations, joys and sorrows of the human world are reality."

Wang Jiazhi said, "Yes, everyone wants to achieve their ideal of revenge with great ambition, but looking back, they still can't escape reality."

In the evening, Xiao Shuang came back and saw Wang Jiazhi writing at her desk. Xiao Shuang placed two pieces of strawberry cake from the cafeteria next to her and said, "Zhou Minlin said he bought them to treat someone to afternoon tea, but they didn't come because of something, so they couldn't finish the leftovers. He asked me to bring them back so we can each have one."

Wang Jiazhi looked in surprise at the cake she had always wanted to eat.

Since there was no coffee to go with the cake, Wang Jiazhi brewed some black tea for her exam preparation. She and Xiaoshuang sat side by side at the table, eating cake, drinking black tea, and looking at the moon on the treetops through the window.

Some people no longer live in the dormitory during the summer vacation, and the deserted corridors late at night seem even more lonely.

Wang Jiazhi sat on the bench, alone with the dim light, and she never saw that shadow again.
