Chapter 176

Chapter 176

The house had two floors below, with two families living on each floor. But the top floor where she lived was the only one occupied by this family.

The neighbors downstairs heard that the house upstairs had been rented out. They saw her carrying only a suitcase in, and it was hard to tell whether she was a young girl or a young wife. She came in at noon and did not come out until noon the next day. The upstairs was also quiet.

The people downstairs were talking about it: "Why didn't she come downstairs? She didn't even come down to fetch water."

"Yeah, even if you're not in a hurry to clean the house, you still have to wash and scrub."

Wang Jiazhi now feels that she is lazier than ever. Apart from the random thoughts that can't be stopped in her mind, all her energy and vitality seem to have been drained away, and she is too lazy to do anything.

At noon, she struggled to get up, determined to get on with her life. She hadn't gotten up since she closed the door and lay down, and after a whole day, she finally sat up in bed and looked around the house.

She put on her shoes and looked at what she needed to add to the house.

It was indeed just cleaned up, and the dust in the corners was also cleared, saving her the trouble of cleaning up in a big way.

She unpacked her luggage, pondered for a moment, and hid her valuables. Then she went over the things she needed to buy, smoothed her hair, locked the door with the lock she had brought, and went downstairs.

This place is very close to the market, so it is convenient to buy things. She picked out two quilt covers, bought cotton, buckwheat husks, and some daily necessities.

On her way back, passing by the water, the gorgeous apricot blossoms scattered petals like falling snow, covering her body and head.

She was surrounded by sunshine and the fragrance of flowers, gazing at the bright spring scenery, but her heart was colder than a snowy day.

After all, they never spent a spring together, and it was always the gloomy and cold autumn and winter.

After putting her things down, she went downstairs to fetch some water.

A woman in her fifties on the second floor, wearing a gray dress, smiled at her and said, "Fetch some water."

"Oh." She smiled and walked forward.

In the past, even when she was starving and freezing, she could still carry two or three buckets of water upstairs, but now it was a struggle. After all, people are born in hardship and die in comfort.

After washing the quilt, she tidied the house and then thought about what else she needed to buy to avoid the trouble of buying more things in the future.

After a long day of hard work, she was sweating. She didn't have the energy to light a fire and cook, so she bought some vegetable-filled buns while buying quilt covers. They weren't greasy even when they were cold, as they didn't contain any oil at all.

The weather was getting hot today, and it was too hot to cover herself with a fur coat at night, but she had no suitable clothes to cover herself with. She was sweating, but she still covered herself with it.

When she woke up the next day, she was sweltering. Even though it was April, she was still covered in her fur coat. She really wanted to stay in winter and hibernate in her cave.

The quilt cover was already dry, and she had been sewing from morning till afternoon, finishing the mattress, pillow, and thin quilt. There were still apricot petals among the cotton that had drifted in yesterday, but she hadn't picked them out and had stored them inside.

There are bedding and pillows on the bed, and there is always a sense of daily life here.

In fact, she had been making do like that most of the time during these days of escape.

She sat on the bed and looked around the room. There were just a few bare pieces of furniture, but it didn't matter. She didn't care what happened.

Thinking back to the past, she was displaced and had no place to live. She lived with her aunt, living under someone else's roof, and was not even allowed to light the charcoal stove in the winter. Living in a spacious house that belonged to her alone was simply a dream for her.

Now, it's completely different.

At night, a full moon hung in the clear sky. As if from a fairytale, the moonlight first illuminated the tranquil river, its reflection mirroring the moon's image on the surface, shimmering on the gentle ripples. Then, the moonlight shone on the misty, snow-like apricot blossoms on the shore. Their shadows were reflected in the windows of the houses on the first floor, and warm yellow lights lit up on every floor of the building.

There were two families on the first floor. A man in dark blue clothes from one family was collecting leftover fruits from a basket in front of the door, and a man from the other family was chopping wood at the door.

A woman on the second floor was checking the calendar by the window, while a man in another household was sorting through piles of old books in the hallway. Aside from the elderly single woman on the second floor, who had already eaten early, the other three households were in the kitchen, cooking dinner. Smoke curled from the windows, but there was no sound of frying or stir-frying.

The moonlight shone on the third floor. The window had been covered with lake blue curtains. Through the gap in the curtains, a little girl in white pajamas and with her hair loose was sitting on a bed covered with a sky-blue white orchid quilt, spreading out postcards in front of her.
