Chapter 58
The movie theater started showing Gone with the Wind, and Xiaoshuang asked Wang Jiazhi to go see the show together. Wang Jiazhi bought some sugar-roasted chestnuts for a snack, and Xiaoshuang bought some soda.
Xiaoshuang watched with rapt interest, but Wang Jiazhi remained indifferent. It wasn't that she disliked the story; if she were still dreaming, she might have envisioned it. Things were different now. In these turbulent times, it was impossible for the heroine to forge ahead with such tenacity and determination, ultimately returning to a life of prosperity and wealth, with someone who would unwaveringly love, pamper, and accommodate her. In these troubled times, simply surviving was a luxury. So many talented and brilliant people had turned to dust.
The show started at nine o'clock and it was almost twelve o'clock when they finished. They ate wontons on the roadside.
It was freezing cold late at night, so both of them put on sweaters and jackets.
The steaming wonton soup hit her clammy face. Wang Jiazhi ate it hot and felt much warmer. She felt water dripping into the bowl, and then she felt her eyes hurt. The soup had chili oil in it, and the steam got into her eyes, and tears started flowing.
Wang Jiazhi rubbed her eyes, but the more she rubbed, the more painful it became.
Xiao Shuang smiled and said, "Just let me lick it for you."
Wang Jiazhi hurriedly said, "I'll be fine in a moment, no, no."
When his eyes healed, Xiao Shuang said, "When you have a boyfriend in the future, someone will lick your eyes."
Wang Jiazhi laughed and said, "Only my mother has licked my eyes. Wen Runze must have licked your eyes before, for you to say that."
Xiao Shuang quickly said, "I didn't."
"No, that's why you said boyfriend."
Xiaoshuang didn't say anything, just tilted her head, rested her head on her arm and smiled foolishly.
Wang Jiazhi also leaned back in her chair and laughed.
There is a moon shrouded in clouds in the night sky.
The next day, Wang Jiazhi got up and packed up for class, and put a letter in the drawer.
It wasn't her father, it was her brother. She was very surprised. This was the first time her brother had written to her since he went abroad. Judging from the content of the letter, her brother must have been very angry and had no one to confide in.
The letter said that ever since his stepmother gave birth to his younger brother, his father had treated him increasingly badly and he couldn't even eat meat.
Wang Jiazhi felt there must be some exaggeration, but it was definitely not as good as before. Her father had always doted on her younger brother. While a stepmother meant a stepfather, it wasn't as quick and unbearable as this. But what would happen next was uncertain.
Wang Jiazhi thought of a common scene: because her stepmother gave birth to her younger brother, she could not have enough food or warm clothes, let alone study and get married.
She didn't think it was necessary. After all, he was her son. Even if she didn't need a son, her son was her face. It was really unacceptable not to let him study and get married. It was too embarrassing.
"Hey, he has to be the only one to get married in the family." Wang Jiazhi thought to herself.
