Chapter 17 Something's Wrong with Commander Song
Song Yiping is 26 years old this year, which is indeed not young.
Their regiment's instructor, Zhang, was only two months older than him, but he already had two children, the younger one just one year old and the older one already running around everywhere.
Instructor Zhang said he was picky, and then earnestly lectured him, "Old Song, let me tell you, no matter how picky you are, you'll all be the same after marriage. If you ask me, as long as she's decent-looking and knows how to manage a household, that's enough. Your sister-in-law, my mother found her for me back in our hometown. We had never met before the wedding. The first time we met was on our wedding day. I only found out what she looked like when I went to her house to pick her up. Now she's doing quite well, and she has two kids. Feelings just grow as you get to know each other."
After finishing, she patted him on the shoulder and said, "Tell me what kind of person you like, whether they're fat or thin, tall or short. I'll ask your sister-in-law to keep an eye out for you in the sanitation team."
There were many female soldiers in the medical team, and there was bound to be one that Song Yiping liked.
Song Yiping is a bit picky, otherwise he wouldn't be so old and still single.
However, when asked what kind of person he likes, he really couldn't say.
But now he knows that it has to be something that catches his eye, something that gives him a feeling at first sight.
To use a more poetic term, it was the first time he saw her that he was captivated.
For example, that girl I met twice.
The moment he saw her, he knew that this was the kind of partner he wanted.
But now he doesn't even know what the other person's name is or whether they have a partner.
He didn't want to talk about it at first, since it was still far from being settled, but judging from the situation, his mother wouldn't let him off the hook if he didn't tell her, and she insisted on forcing him to go on blind dates.
Even if he told her, Fang Yuru didn't believe him and asked, "What's that girl's name? Where does she work? When did you two meet?"
Song Yiping, "..."
He had only met the girl twice, and both times were brief; the number of words they exchanged could be counted on one hand.
Because both meetings were too rushed, he was afraid that the girls would think he was frivolous, so he didn't dare to ask for their contact information either time. How was he supposed to know their names or where they worked?
He originally planned to go to the photo studio to inquire after returning from his business trip, hoping to find out some information.
As soon as he got back, before he even had a chance to go to the photo studio, he was arranged to go on a blind date.
He never liked blind dates in the first place, and now he's even more averse to them.
Fang Yuru said knowingly, "Can't say it, huh? I knew you were trying to fool me again. Let me tell you, you have to go this time no matter what. Everything has been arranged. If you don't go, I won't be able to explain it to your Aunt Liu."
Dr. Fang gave a firm order this time; we had to go.
Song Yiping couldn't persuade him otherwise, so he had no choice but to compromise.
I was thinking of just going through the motions, and then finding a reason to refuse.
Anyway, Dr. Fang only told him to meet the girl, but didn't require him to actually date her.
Song Yiping replied, "Okay, I'll go back to my room then."
Fang Yuru instructed him, "The girl's name is Yan Ruyi, Yan as in color, and Ruyi as in auspiciousness and good fortune."
Song Yiping: "Hmm."
"He's really handsome, I like him quite a bit. I've put his picture on your bedside table. Remember to look at the picture first to recognize him. Otherwise, if you walk up to each other tomorrow and don't recognize him, the girl will think you're not interested and won't have a good first impression of you."
Song Yiping responded and went upstairs.
Fang Yuru knows her son very well. Although he agreed to go on the blind date, judging from his attitude, he was clearly not serious.
She was deeply worried. Her son was good in every way, but he just lacked a romantic spark. She wondered when he would finally understand.
Fang Yuru was on the night shift that day and handed over her shift at 8 a.m. the next morning to go home.
Aunt Liu was cooking in the kitchen when she saw her return. She called her into the kitchen and said, "Just now, Commander Song asked me for an electric iron, saying he needed to iron his clothes. I offered to iron them for him, but he wouldn't let me, saying he would iron them himself."
Aunt Liu is the family's housekeeper and doesn't usually live here, so she doesn't know that Song Yiping went on a blind date.
This was the first time she had ever seen Song Yiping ask for an iron to iron clothes, and she found it strange. She whispered to Fang Yuru, "Is Commander Song dating someone?"
Aside from going to see his girlfriend, Liu couldn't think of any other reason why Song Yiping would iron clothes.
Every time her son went to meet his girlfriend, he would groom himself like this, washing his face and shaving, making himself look presentable.
Fang Yuru: "...I'll go check on him."
They lived in a two-story building. Fang Yuru and Song Chengren lived on the first floor, while Song Yiping lived alone on the second floor.
Fang Yuru was thinking ahead. She envisioned that after Song Yiping got married, if the young couple wanted to live with them, they could live on the second floor, and she and Lao Song wouldn't have to move downstairs anymore.
Just as Fang Yuru reached the top of the stairs, Song Yiping came down from downstairs.
Fang Yuru was stunned.
He was wearing a new military uniform, freshly ironed, and it was perfectly crisp.
When I came back yesterday, I still had some stubble on my chin, but now I've shaved it clean.
She probably took a shower; her hair still looks a little wet.
She was clearly dressed up specially; she looked radiant and refreshed.
Fang Yuru, “…”
Last night they seemed reluctant, but after one night, how come the wind suddenly changed?
The contrast is quite striking.
Is this a picture of a girl you met and have taken a liking to?
Mothers always have a filter on their children; they think their own children are good no matter what.
Moreover, his own son is indeed outstanding.
Fang Yuru was no exception; the more she looked at Song Yiping, the more satisfied she became. "My son is so handsome; the girl will definitely fall in love with him at first sight."
Song Yiping ignored the previous sentence. After all, he had heard the same thing so many times since he was a child that he was immune to it.
However, he liked the last sentence and smiled reservedly.
Aunt Liu came out of the kitchen. "Commander Song, are you going on a blind date?"
Fang Yuru: "Dr. Liu from next door introduced me to someone, and we've arranged to meet at the movie theater today."
Aunt Liu said, "Oh dear, what time is the appointment? Am I cooking too late? Will it cause any problems?"
Fang Yuru: "It won't delay us, there's plenty of time."
Fearing that she would delay Song Yiping's important business, Aunt Liu quickly brought out breakfast.
Song Chengren was away on a business trip and not at home. Including Liu Sao, there were only three people eating at home.
Their family doesn't have many rules, and Aunt Liu also eats at the same table.
Breakfast consisted of millet porridge, pickled cucumbers, and soup dumplings. Song Yiping ate quickly, finishing in no time, and said to Fang Yuru, "I'm leaving."
Fang Yuru glanced at her watch; it was only 8:30.
It takes about 40 minutes to get from their home to Guangming Cinema by bicycle, and even faster by car, at most 20 minutes.
Fang Yuru: "Didn't you say 10 o'clock? What are you going there for now?"
Song Yiping mumbled, "I need to take care of something first."
Fang Yuru naturally assumed that he was going to the regimental headquarters.
He just returned from a business trip, and the team probably has a lot of work backlogged. Although he can rest today, the important work still can't be delayed.
Fang Yuru didn't think much of it and even reminded him, "Keep an eye on the time. Don't get so caught up in work that you miss your meeting with Xiaoyan."
It's impossible for it to be a mistake, because Song Yiping didn't go to the regimental headquarters at all. He went straight to the Guangming Cinema after leaving home.
What he was thinking was, what if Yan Ruyi arrived early? He couldn't keep Yan Ruyi waiting for him.
Moreover, arriving early allows the two to talk for a while, deepening Yan Ruyi's understanding of him.
He had high hopes, but he left home too early and the journey was exceptionally smooth. He arrived at the Guangming Cinema around nine o'clock.
There was still almost an hour before the movie started.
There was no sign of Yan Ruyi.
She's still holed up at home.
