The Cheng family carriage sped along and finally stopped in front of the Cheng residence. Master Cheng, with a sullen face, got off the carriage first and strode towards the residence without even glancing at Cheng Rongrong.
Cheng Rongrong bit her lips tightly, tears welling up in her eyes. She lifted her skirt and stumbled after Master Cheng, trotting all the way into the mansion.
The two walked one after the other through the corridor with carved beams and painted buildings and came to the main hall.
Madam Cheng was sitting in the hall, leisurely flipping through a book in her hand. Hearing the noise, she looked up and her eyes fell on Master Cheng and Cheng Rongrong.
Mrs. Cheng was shocked when she first noticed Mr. Cheng's ashen face, and then she saw Cheng Rongrong crying bitterly, which made her even more confused.
"Master, what happened? Rongrong..."
Seeing this, Madam Cheng dropped the scroll in her hand to the ground with a "pa" sound. She did not bother to pick it up, and quickly stood up and walked to Master Cheng in two steps. Her face was full of anxiety and worry. She turned to look at Cheng Rongrong and called softly:
"Rongrong, what's wrong with you? Tell me, who bullied you?"
Master Cheng snorted, his chest heaving violently like a volcano that could erupt at any moment. He swung his sleeves and said angrily:
"Ask her! Ask her about the good things she did! She has completely disgraced me today."
After saying that, he strode to the main seat and sat down with a thud. His old face was as black as the bottom of a pot.
"Mom...I...I'm fine..."
Cheng Rongrong sobbed, her voice choked. She raised her sleeve to wipe away her tears, her voice as low as a mosquito.
"Don't worry, my daughter is really fine. She's just... a little tired and wants to rest for a while. I'll go back to my room first..."
After saying that, without waiting for Mrs. Cheng to ask any more questions, he ran back to the room without looking back, slammed the door, threw himself on the bed, and sobbed, his cry full of grievance and helplessness.
Mother Cheng was worried and followed her into the room. Seeing her daughter like this, she felt as if she was pricked by a needle. She walked over quietly, sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroked Cheng Rongrong's hair, and asked:
"Rongrong, if you have anything on your mind, just tell me. Don't keep it to yourself. Your crying is breaking my heart. What's wrong? You're crying so sadly. Did something happen to you? Tell me. Don't be afraid. I'm here for you."
Cheng Rongrong sat up suddenly, hugged her mother, and cried even harder. She sobbed and said, "Mom, I... I want to marry Brother Song Zhe!"
Mother Cheng was stunned. Why did this girl bring up this again? Didn't she ask Father Cheng to cancel the marriage? Why did she go out now? What happened in the meantime?
"Rongrong, what's wrong with you? Why do you suddenly bring up this matter again?" Mother Cheng patted her back gently and asked softly, her tone full of confusion and puzzlement.
"Mom, you don't know, Song Zhe... he has recovered and can walk now. He will be able to continue his studies in a while!" Cheng Rongrong raised her head, looked at Cheng's mother with tears in her eyes, and said, with a hint of surprise and eagerness in her tone.
"What? Song Zhe can get out of bed now?"
Cheng's mother's face was filled with disbelief, her eyes wide as bells, and her voice rose an octave. "This...how is this possible? Where did you hear that? Wasn't he...paralyzed in bed before?"
"It's true, mother! I met Song Zhe's sister Song Qingqing today, and she told me. Song's mother was there at the time. And my father and I just came back from Song Zhe's house. I saw it with my own eyes at his house! He can really walk!"
Cheng Rongrong said anxiously, fearing that Cheng's mother would not believe her, "And he is married! What should I do? I like him so much. If it weren't for you, I would not have broken off the engagement!" Cheng Rongrong felt more and more aggrieved as she spoke, and tears fell like beads from a broken string.
"Rongrong, don't be anxious. Talk to mother and tell her which family's daughter he married."
Cheng's mother asked hurriedly, with a hint of urgency in her voice. She was also a little confused. Song Zhe was able to leave. This was a big deal!
"She's a country girl, and Song Zhe seems to like her very much. As for where she comes from, I don't know. I'm just angry." Cheng Rongrong sobbed, her tone full of unwillingness and regret.
“Is that so?”
Mother Cheng's brows furrowed slightly, then relaxed. She gently wiped away the tears from Cheng Rongrong's face and comforted her:
"Don't cry yet. Find out the situation first. And think about it, Song Zhe was probably not well when he got married, so this woman might have been bought to bring him good luck. You also know Song Zhe's situation at that time. It's impossible for an ordinary woman to marry him."
"Mom, what you said... is it true?"
Cheng Rongrong raised her head, her tear-stained face full of doubt. Her voice was still tearful, but with a hint of hope, as if a drowning person had grasped the last straw.
Seeing her daughter like this, Cheng's mother wiped away the tears from her eyes with a handkerchief and said softly:
"This is just my guess, but it's not impossible. Think about it, with Song Zhe in that state, which respectable lady would be willing to marry him? It's likely that the Song family bought a country girl just to bring him good luck. So, aren't you close to Song Zhe's sister, Song Qingqing? Why don't you go find her first and find out the story behind the woman Song Zhe married?"
A hint of hesitation flashed across Cheng Rongrong's eyes. She bit her lip, as if she had made up her mind, and then said as if to comfort herself, "But...but what if it's not?"
