Zhou Yuxuan stumbled and nearly fell. Quick-witted, Chen Xiaoru grabbed his arm and pulled him back to her. The burning sensation on her arm made her heart sinkāhis body felt like a branding iron. His breathing was heavy and rapid, his chest heaving violently. He had clearly reached his limit.
"Hold on!" Chen Xiaoru's brows furrowed, her lips pressed into a straight line, her tone undeniably resolute. Without a word, she placed Zhou Yuxuan's arm over her shoulder and moved towards the corridor entrance.
"Cough cough..." Zhou Yuxuan coughed weakly a few times, coughing up a mouthful of bloody saliva, his face as pale as paper.
"Xiao Ru... let me go... go away quickly..." He spoke intermittently, his voice hoarse and weak, filled with deep worry.
"Shut up!" Chen Xiaoru turned her head suddenly and glared at him fiercely, her eyes as sharp as a knife.
"Stop talking nonsense! Let's die together!" She gritted her teeth and dragged Zhou Yuxuan's pace a little faster.
Rushing into the hallway, Chen Xiaoru slammed the iron door shut, the heavy door clattering against the doorframe. She quickly locked it, her trembling fingers struggling to secure the latch.
Outside, the roars of zombies and the clatter of hammering on the iron gate echoed one after another, each one a thumping sound that seemed to hammer at Chen Xiaoru's heart. Not daring to delay, she took a deep breath, turned around, and carried Zhou Yuxuan on her back. Step by step, she walked upstairs with swift movements.
"Put...put me down..."
Zhou Yuxuan spoke intermittently, his voice so weak that it was almost inaudible.
"I... I'm too heavy... you... you go..." He raised his hand with difficulty, trying to push Chen Xiaoru away, but it dropped down weakly.
Chen Xiaoru suddenly stopped and turned to look at him. Her hair was soaked with sweat and stuck to her forehead, a mess. Her chest was heaving violently, and her breathing was rapid, but she forced herself not to stop.
"Shut up!" she growled, her voice hoarse but firm. "Stop saying such nonsense! I won't abandon you!"
Finally, she carried Zhou Yuxuan home and gently placed him on the sofa. Zhou Yuxuan's face was frighteningly pale, his lips chapped, his brow furrowed, and his breathing rapid. His entire body was burning hot, like a ball of flame. Chen Xiaoru reached out and touched his forehead, feeling a searing heat that frightened her and she abruptly retracted her hand.
"Damn it!" She cursed and paced back and forth in the room anxiously, her heart in turmoil.
Chen Xiaoru's trembling hands touched Zhou Yuxuan's burning forehead again. She took a deep breath and silently said to herself, "System, what's wrong with Zhou Yuxuan? Why is he burning so badly?"
"Host, he is awakening his superpowers." The system's cold voice sounded in her mind.
"However, he was severely injured by the zombies. During the awakening process, he may very likely..." The system paused, "die."
"How to save him?" Chen Xiaoru asked hurriedly, anxiously.
"The spiritual spring water in the upgrade space."
The system replied, "It requires 100,000 points. The upgraded spiritual spring water can dissolve the zombie virus, which means it can expel the zombie toxins through the skin and also strengthen the body. This is the price I mentioned before."
100,000 points... almost a third of the points she had managed to accumulate. Chen Xiaoru bit her lower lip tightly and hesitated for a moment. Finally, she made up her mind.
"Upgrade." Chen Xiaoru closed her eyes and said firmly, "I can't watch him die."
The system immediately executed the upgrade command. Chen Xiaoru felt a slight energy fluctuation in the space, and then the system prompt sounded: "The upgrade of the portable space to Lingquan space is complete."
"System, can I enter the Lingquan space?" Chen Xiaoru asked.
"Yes, host, but for now, only you can enter." The system replied.
Without a moment's hesitation, Chen Xiaoru grabbed a glass on the coffee table, and with a thought, she flashed into the space.
In the Lingquan space, the air was fresh and filled with spiritual energy. An ancient stone well stood quietly in the center, its water crystal clear and emitting a soft light.
Without taking a closer look at the other scenes in the space, Chen Xiaoru quickly walked to the well, bent over and scooped a cup of spiritual spring water with a glass, and immediately returned to the living room.
She held the cup of water and sat down next to Zhou Yuxuan. She carefully brought the cup to his cracked lips and fed him the water bit by bit.
Zhou Yuxuan was unconscious, but his swallowing instinct remained. The spiritual spring water flowed down the corner of his mouth and into his throat bit by bit. Chen Xiaoru carefully supported his head, holding the cup steadily with her other hand, afraid to spill a drop.
After feeding the last mouthful, Chen Xiaoru put down the cup and breathed a sigh of relief. She stared at Zhou Yuxuan's pale face with a complex expression, one of worry, heartache, and a subtle tenderness.
She stretched out her fingers, gently stroked his furrowed brow, and whispered, "You're lucky. If you treat me badly in the future, I'll kill you."
After saying that, she stood up, walked to the bedroom closet, and searched for Zhou Yuxuan's clean clothes.
She moved gently, as if she was afraid to disturb his sleep. After finding the clothes, she went to the bathroom again, filled a basin with warm water, and carefully brought it to the sofa and placed it down.
Chen Xiaoru took a deep breath, concentrated her mind, and with a thought, the iodine and gauze in the space instantly appeared in her hands. She gently lifted Zhou Yuxuan's clothes, revealing the wound, and her brows couldn't help but frown.
"The injury is so serious." She whispered, although she knew Zhou Yuxuan was unconscious and couldn't hear.
She carefully disinfected the wound with iodine, her movements gentle and precise. Every time she touched the wound, she could feel Zhou Yuxuan's body trembling slightly, and her heart ached.
