Chapter 17 The Emperor's Peasant Wife 16

As soon as he finished speaking, the court erupted in an uproar, the buzz of discussion rising and falling like a swarm of mosquitoes on a summer day. Many ministers stepped forward to second the motion, their voices mingling like a surging tide, impacting Xuanyuan Che's authority.

"I second the motion! The Concubine Chen is of low birth, like a weed in the mud, it's hard for her to be a big shot!"

"I second the proposal! Conferring the title of Empress Chen is like dropping a huge rock into a calm lake. It will surely lead to harem disputes and shake the foundation of the country!"

Xuanyuan Che's face was frozen like ice, his gaze as sharp as a drawn sword as it swept over the ministers below. A suffocating sense of oppression hung in the air, like the dullness before a storm.

“Bang!”

He slammed his palm down on the armrest of the dragon throne, the sound echoing throughout the magnificent hall. The ministers shrank back like frightened birds, cold sweat trickling down their foreheads.

"I canonize the Chen Fei, it is my family affair."

His voice was as deep as thunder, and every word carried a chilling chill. "My dear ministers, are you meddling too much?"

The temperature in the hall seemed to plummet, and all the civil and military officials felt as if they were plunged into an icy cave. Xuanyuan Che's gaze roamed over everyone's face like a venomous snake, a sneer curling up at the corner of his mouth.

"Speaking of the royal heir, I would like to ask you all a question."

He stood up, his dragon robe billowing like a raging wave. "I have been on the throne for ten years. Have the concubines in my harem increased the number of children for the royal family? Should I then use the seven grounds for divorce and send them all home? What do you think, my dear ministers?"

"Buzz—"

The ministers were struck by lightning, their faces pale as paper. Some felt their legs weaken, and cold sweat soaked their court robes. The hall was completely silent, even the sound of breathing became inaudible.

"I have made up my mind. Let's not discuss this matter any further!"

Xuanyuan Che's voice was like a sword unsheathed, its edge exposed. "If anyone criticizes the Concubine again, they will be killed without mercy! Dismiss the court!"

The ministers kowtowed and hurriedly left as if they had been pardoned. The sound of their footsteps, mixed with the rustling of their robes, echoed in the empty hall, like the sound of an old man fleeing in panic.

Xuanyuan Che turned away, leaving all the civil and military officials in the court looking at each other in bewilderment, each with their own thoughts.

After the court session, Xuanyuan Che, still furious, went straight to the Palace of Heavenly Purity. Chen Xiaoru was still sound asleep. He walked to her bedside, looking at her peaceful sleeping face, and the anger in his heart gradually subsided.
