Chen Xiaoru packed up the lunch box neatly, making a slight clattering sound, then stood up and her eyes fell back on Xiao Lang lying on the bed.
She had long noticed Xiao Lang's furtive gaze, and the corners of her mouth could not help but rise slightly, and a thought of teasing him arose in her heart. She suddenly bent down and moved closer to Xiao Lang with a playful smile.
"Captain Xiao," she lowered her voice, a hint of teasing in her tone, and the sly smile on her lips deepened, "Your eyes are almost glued to me. Tell me honestly, are you attracted to me?"
After saying that, with a hint of mischief in mind, she blew gently on Xiao Lang's earlobe, and the warm breath instantly sprayed on his ear.
This sudden intimate gesture hit Xiao Lang like an electric current. He froze completely and his cheeks turned red at a speed visible to the naked eye. The heat even spread to his ears, as if they were about to burn.
Xiao Lang's mind went blank. In his entire life, he had never been so boldly teased by a girl. He dodged backwards in panic and stammered back, "How could I... possibly... like you!"
Looking at Xiao Lang's bewildered look and his hurried explanation, the smile in Chen Xiaoru's eyes became even more intense, like a little fox who had succeeded in a prank.
There was a glint of cunning in her eyes, and while Xiao Lang was still stuttering, she quickly planted a kiss on his cheek like a dragonfly skimming the water.
Xiao Lang was instantly frozen in place as if he had been acupunctured. His brain was buzzing and blank, as if he had lost the ability to think.
He raised his hand in a daze, his fingertips trembling as he touched the cheek he had kissed, as if her warmth still lingered there. He suddenly came to his senses, and with a hint of anger and more panic, he demanded, "You...how could you kiss me!"
"Sorry, I couldn't help myself." Chen Xiaoru smiled, her eyes curved, her tone full of matter-of-factness. "But, it's not illegal for me to kiss my lover, right?"
"Cough cough——" A sudden cough sound came from the door of the ward. Chen Xiaoru jumped up from the bed in an instant as if she was scalded, and thought to herself: Oh no, it's so unlucky that I can be caught doing something "bad"!
A figure in military uniform appeared at the ward door. Against the backlight, their face couldn't be seen clearly, but the sound of their cough instantly jolted Chen Xiaoru awake. She quickly glanced at Xiao Lang. The blush on his face hadn't completely faded, and his eyes still held a hint of panic and lingering shock. Chen Xiaoru's mind raced, but she quickly put on a natural smile, as if nothing had happened.
"Captain Li, what brings you here?" Chen Xiaoru spoke first, her tone filled with just the right amount of surprise and enthusiasm, like a spring breeze blowing away the tense atmosphere in the ward. She recognized the man; it was Xiao Lang's superior, Li Qiang.
Li Qiang walked into the ward with a trace of fatigue on his face. He glanced around and was visibly stunned when he saw Chen Xiaoru. A hint of doubt flashed in his eyes, "You are...?"
"I am Captain Xiao's lover, Chen Xiaoru." Chen Xiaoru introduced herself gracefully, her voice clear and pleasant.
Captain Li's heart skipped a beat. Wasn't Xiao Lang's lover very fat? This... rumor still seems unbelievable! He muttered to himself, but his expression remained calm.
"Captain, what brings you here?" Xiao Lang's voice sounded much more natural than before, though his speech was still a little fast, slightly revealing his inner restlessness. He tried hard to control his gaze and not look at Chen Xiaoru.
"I heard you woke up, so I came to see you." Li Qiang walked to the bedside and looked at Xiao Lang. He looked him up and down and asked with concern, "How is Captain Xiao? What did the doctor say?"
"Much better, nothing serious. I'll be discharged in a few days." Xiao Lang tried his best to sound calm, but the remaining blush on his cheeks had not completely disappeared, as if he had applied a layer of light rouge, which looked a little unnatural.
Chen Xiaoru stood aside, quietly observing Xiao Lang. The blush on his ears hadn't completely faded, and his eyes were a little evasive, clearly having been greatly affected by what had just happened. The corners of her mouth curled up slightly. She hadn't expected that Captain Xiao, who usually looked so serious, could be so easily shy.
"Well, you guys chat, I'll go out first." Chen Xiaoru said softly, turned around and prepared to leave, leaving them space to talk alone.
After leaving the ward, Chen Xiaoru gently closed the door, leaned against the wall, took a long breath, raised her hand and patted her slightly hot cheek, muttering to herself: "Really? I got caught twice today. I have to be more careful next time."
The atmosphere in the ward was a little subtle.
"Captain Xiao, you're so lucky!" Regimental Commander Li pulled a chair over and sat down beside the bed. He looked at Xiao Lang with interest, a teasing smile on his face. "That female comrade just now was really beautiful."
Xiao Lang felt a little uncomfortable being stared at by him. He coughed lightly and his eyes wandered, "Captain, please stop joking with me."
"Hey, how can this be a joke? I'm just telling the truth!"
Captain Li smiled and waved his hand. Seeing that Xiao Lang was really embarrassed, he restrained his joking expression and changed his tone to become serious. "Okay, no more jokes, let's get down to business. Captain Xiao, you completed this mission very well. The higher-ups are very satisfied! When you are discharged from the hospital, remember to submit the mission report. I have already recommended you for a commendation to the higher-ups!"
"Thank you, Captain!" Xiao Lang finally smiled when he heard that the mission was completed successfully, and expressed his gratitude sincerely.
"You deserve this, no need to thank me."
Captain Li waved his hand, as if he remembered something, and a gossipy look appeared on his face again. He moved closer and asked in a low voice, "But I'm still curious, was that female comrade just now really your lover? I remember hearing people say that your lover was... um... quite plump? How come she has changed so much now?" As he spoke, he drew a round arc in the air with his hand.
