The seven babies on the bed were sleeping soundly, their pink little faces were rosy and their breathing was even.
The leading officer's gaze swept across the messy room, finally settling on the tightly bound criminals. He turned to the young officer and said in a steady, forceful voice, "Take Captain Wang and the others and take the children to the hospital for a thorough checkup."
He pointed at the other officers and said sternly, "The rest of you, follow me. Take these scumbags back to the station for questioning." At this point, his brow furrowed deeply, his eyes sharp. "There must be a bigger crime behind this case. We must get to the bottom of it."
He then turned to Chen Xiaoru, looking at the bloodstains on her arms and the mud all over her body, and softened his tone a bit: "Comrade, your courage is admirable. But next time you encounter such a situation, you should still report it to the police first."
Chen Xiaoru wiped the sweat from her forehead and nodded, "You're right, I was too impulsive." There was a hint of fatigue in her voice, but her eyes were still firm.
The leading police officer checked his watch, glanced at the dark night outside the window, and said to Chen Xiaoru, "It's getting late now. You should go back and rest first. Just come to the police station tomorrow to give a statement."
"Okay, I'll definitely come tomorrow." Chen Xiaoru nodded and turned to walk out the door. Her steps were heavy, as she was exhausted both physically and mentally from the night's experiences.
On the way home, Chen Xiaoru couldn't help but think of Xiao Lang. Would he be worried if she hadn't returned home so late? Thinking of this, she shook her head and pulled a bitter smile at the corner of her mouth: "What am I thinking about? How could he be worried about me?"
