A light drizzle began to fall in Tiancheng in the middle of the night.
Fu Jingsheng and Ye Jianming sat in the rest area.
"Han Nian said she's quite afraid of rain. On rainy days, her dad has nothing to do, so he spends the whole day drinking at home, and then he beats her and her mother," Ye Jianming suddenly said.
Fu Jingsheng patted him on the shoulder: "Ye Jianming, it is indeed difficult to ask you to cheer up, but I really don't want you and Rong Yan to continue to be so depressed."
“Fu Jingsheng, I’m not discouraged. I was thinking when I saw the rain that Han Nian is afraid of the rain. She’s asleep now, so she can’t see it. If she can’t see it, she won’t be afraid.” The man forced himself to stay awake. “After the rain, she’ll be fine.”
Fu Jingsheng knew that Gu Hannian wouldn't last more than a few days, but he couldn't say it at this moment.
"Yes, we will," Fu Jingsheng replied.
"Go back and spend some time with Rong Yan," Ye Jianming said after a moment of silence. "I'll call you if anything comes up."
Fu Jingsheng sent a message to Shen Xingzhi, and Rong Yan was indeed still awake.
The man walked past the hospital.
When he passed by Yushui Bay, he picked up the nursing clothes he had worn on his last trip. He couldn't let Rongyan sink into despair.
At Shen Xingzhi's house, Rong Yan woke up with a start after dozing off for a while. She heard the sound of rain hitting the window. She sat up, staring intently outside, and remained silent for a long time.
Shen Xingzhi sat with her, asking every now and then, "Would you like some water? Are you hungry?"
Rong Yan simply shook her head.
It wasn't until Fu Jingsheng sent a message that Shen Xingzhi replied with a photo of Rong Yan not sleeping.
The doorbell rang in the early hours of the morning.
Rong Yan's expression changed; she looked towards the living room, a look of confusion on her face.
"I'll go open the door."
Fu Jingsheng, holding the fox fur coat, greeted Shen Xingzhi.
"Go upstairs, I'll go downstairs and get a room. Call me if you need anything." The woman offered to make room for me.
She couldn't persuade Rong Yan.
Fu Jingsheng has arrived.
Rong Yan felt uneasy when she saw the man go upstairs, guessing that her sister was gone.
"Fu Jingsheng, don't say anything." Rong Yan was afraid to hear this news, and she shouted before the man could even reach her side.
Fu Jingsheng obediently stopped and stood on the stairs. He then put on his clothes, except for the hood, and prepared a few jokes on the spot.
The man performed clumsily, his tall frame cramped in the small enclosure, unable to move freely, and nearly slipped off the stairs several times.
He tried his best to make his wife happy.
With a few gestures, Rong Yan did smile, but as she smiled, tears welled up in her eyes.
She threw off the covers and went downstairs, hugging Fu Jingsheng tightly: "Is it because my sister is gone that you were afraid I would be too sad, so you thought of this way to tell me?"
Fu Jingsheng gently wiped away the tears from the corner of the woman's eyes with his exposed large hand: "No, Ye Jianming is at the hospital. I don't have anything to do tonight, but I was worried about you, so I came to check on you."
The man awkwardly made a heart shape with his hands again, then took Rong Yan's hand and led her to the living room.
He had Rong Yan sit on the sofa, and then he started dancing.
Midway through, Fu Jingsheng stopped, took off his hood, and his face was covered in sweat, his hair plastered to his forehead. He was panting, "Rong Yan, I know you're sad. I want to cheer you up. We all hope you can be strong."
Rong Yan got up and hugged Fu Jingsheng.
Negative emotions are contagious; if she's so sad, how can the people around her be happy?
"Thank you," the woman said softly. "I know that even if I cry myself blind, my sister won't get better. I overheard your conversation with the doctor, and I feel guilty. I'm the one who harmed her. If I hadn't brought her to Tiancheng, at least her life wouldn't have been in danger."
Fu Jingsheng interrupted: "Is she not threatened? Her father could end her life at any time. Does she have a single good day, living in constant fear? In the few months I've been in Tiancheng, I've seen her happy every day."
Rong Yan couldn't get over her own inner turmoil. Even though she knew that Gu Han Nian had been doing well lately and had even met Ye Jian Ming, she felt that if it weren't for her feud with the Rong family, Gu Han Nian could have continued to be happy.
Fu Jingsheng stroked his wife's back and gently comforted her.
The phone rang suddenly; it was Ye Jianming calling.
Fu Jingsheng's eyes froze for a moment.
"Fu Jingsheng, are you with Rong Yan? Han Nian is awake," Ye Jianming said happily.
Rong Yan put on her clothes and rushed to the hospital without even washing her face.
Gu Hannian regained consciousness and called out for her mother, Jian Ming, and Rong Yan.
Gu Fang stopped crying: "Child, Mom is here."
In the countryside, this is called a "last gasp before death," and Gu Fang knew that her daughter's life was nearing its end.
Ye Jianming didn't understand. He thought Gu Hannian had recovered. The man cried with joy: "Hannian, you scared me to death! You're finally awake. Does it hurt?"
Gu Hannian rolled her eyes: "It doesn't hurt, Jian Ming, don't cry."
"Okay, I won't cry." The man wiped away his tears.
Half an hour later, Rong Yan arrived.
She opened the door to the ward.
“Sister.” Rong Yan saw that Gu Han Nian had her eyes open.
"Rong Yan, come here." Gu Hannian heard her sister's voice.
Ye Jianming stepped aside.
Rong Yan lay down beside her sister and said, "Sister, you're not allowed to scare me anymore." As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes again.
"Rong Yan, don't cry," Gu Hannian comforted the woman.
"Don't cry, everyone. After I'm gone, you must be happy."
Rong Yan shook her head: "Sister, don't talk nonsense. You have to stay with me forever. I'm sorry, sister, I didn't protect you well."
“Rong Yan, coming to Tiancheng has been the happiest time of my life. I’m not good with words and I’ve never talked to you before. You don’t know how much I love this place, how much I love all of you, and how much I love every day here.” Gu Han Nian recalled the beautiful days she had spent here.
